We are born, live, and die- a one-time phenomenon for most barring a few claimants of rebirth. From first breath to last we have at max 10 decades if lucky. For most, it is just 3 and a half scores or less. Half this time, we are dependent for upkeep and survival. For rest, we learn, earn, love, procreate, and sometimes contribute, earn a name, and leave an exploitable largesse. As the anima primus on earth, must humans surpass mere survival? I believe, as sentient beings, our primary duty is to have a purpose transcending the simple biological fitment to outlast contemporaries. We must think how to leave this world a better place when we leave. To fulfill, identify, and harness talent and strengths to contribute to the field that excites.

In my experience leading by example is key. When the stuff gets tough, the tough get going! Whether making arrangements for overnight evacuation and rehabilitation of victims of natural disasters, operating as chief administrator in insurgency-hit violent areas, or reaching health and welfare in the most hard-to-reach geographies, the challenges of my job as a senior public servant in India helped hone traits like equanimity, steadiness-under-pressure, and developing ingenious, innovative processes to reach benefits of development to millions. This was not luck. Sustained work on developing agile, tested and trusted teams, multi-stakeholder partnerships, donor-mobilization, networks, and having a people-first approach helped governments put their trust in me, multiplying the results.

My willingness to work extra long hours and assist my team members to finish their goals timely, while managing my own responsibilities, is the reason I am known as a servant leader and appreciated by my team. I am showing them how to think beyond themselves. I am strong on "No excuses" approach to goals and therefore I do not permit myself to rest if my team is struggling. Reputation has much to do with an individuals perception of you when you are interacting with them. The sum of others opinions of their interactions with you is your reputation. Listening to them and understanding them is more than hearing what words they say. Understanding what they intend to convey to you may be more of their their words, it includes their physical movements, and their tonality. When another person feels like you understand what they are attempting to convey then you are truly communicating with them and can offer the proper resolution for them. This goes a long way in establishing your reputation.

Information is power. Better still, developing discernment to extract true information from the chaff of misinformation and disinformation is valuable not only to us but to others who may not look, behave, or speak like us but are judged by us. A case in point- We are all seeking information that conforms to our views for the side we support in the current conflict in the Middle East. The only difference with me is that I deliberately read extensively on the 'other' side, forcing my feeds to prompt alternate stories that retard my confirmation bias. As educated, aware, opinionated citizens, it's vital to understand, isolate & counter our inherent biases. When each of us does that, the world is less conflictual and more forgiving. Start now.

As an Executive Leader we need to understand the strengths of our team members and assist them in building up the areas they are not as strong. As a team leader, an important part of our responsibility is the development of our team directing them in their growth.
