How can you be an effective mentee for physicians?

Having a clear goal should not stop you from adapting and reshaping those goals as you get better wisdom from your mentor, their experiences and the broader healthcare landscape.

A great tip is to have your mentees write a 'letter to self'. Challenge mentees to dive a little deeper in their ambitions, goals, and how they feel they want to be regarded upon by their patients, peers and themselves -a year or so from now. And do not forget to revisit this promise at the end of your menteeship with them. Beware: there is a risk of all being in tears. For it truly is a moment that touches deep.

How to be a good mentee? Be a 'sponge' and take in the wisdom your mentor is sharing. I had a great mentor and I still quote him today.

As a mentor try to be as flexible as possible to work around the mentees schedule. A person is more likely to be engaged if they have set aside time that works best for them. Be clear about expectations, boundaries, etc early in the relationship.

Continuous learning in the form of reading journals, attending conferences, etc. will keep you updated with the latest medical knowledge that you can implement in your clinical practice for better patient care.

Expand your horizons beyond your mentor. Engage with a diverse array of physicians, mentors, and peers to enrich your learning journey. Attend relevant events, workshops, and conferences, forging connections with like-minded individuals. Online communities and forums offer invaluable platforms for exchanging insights and resources. Embrace collaboration, drawing inspiration from a broad network to propel your professional growth.

Stay humble and listen to others in your field of work. They may approach work so much differently—how could that improve how you do things? What can you learn from that? What are some “best practices “ that you could adopt? Listening and keeping an open mind is so important.

Use your mentorship as an opportunity to expand your professional network. Attend events, join professional organizations, and engage with your mentor’s colleagues when appropriate.

Always take the time to speak with others that come from different fields or types of work that are ancillary to what you do because you never know where the next great idea will come from.

Take time to reflect on what you have learned and how you have grown through the mentorship. Acknowledge your progress and the role your mentor has played in your development.

For the last decade, I have been repeatedly invited to mentor people in my field who are just starting out in their careers. Lately, I have a new approach. If a resume or career portfolio of a mentee is shared with me, I also request that my resume is shared as well. I find that practice a very good way to ensure best fit. For analogy sake, it is not only the employer looking for best fit with employee, but the employee has that right as well. Usually, we agree on a time commitment that works for both parties and everything else falls into place. Many times, I share firsthand experience as these are more relatable. Also, every mentoring experience is a good opportunity to reflect on my journey and how far I have come. That is priceless

Mentoring physicians is not only the responsibility of the medical directors or physician leaders, a powerful and impactful relationship is an administrator mentoring a new physician in the group. This builds trust and the results affect patient care and business health of the organization. Most powerful are healthy dyads between physician leaders and non-clinical leaders that can transform the entire health system. It is all about relationships.

Respect your mentor’s time and availability, and come prepared with topics or questions. Seek feedback and guidance from your mentor, and be open to learning from their experience and expertise. Find a mentor who has similar interests, background, and rapport with you, and who is committed to your development. Be flexible, serious, and eager to learn, and show appreciation for your mentor’s support. Put yourself in your mentor’s shoes, and try to understand their perspective and expectations
