How can you build a positive and effective relationship with your team captains?

In my opinion, building a positive and effective relationship with team captains is an important aspect of successful team management. One way to do this is to regularly communicate with them and ask for their input and feedback. It's also important to recognise and acknowledge their efforts and contributions and to provide them with the support they need to be successful in their roles. Additionally, creating opportunities for team captains to build relationships with each other and with other members of the team can help foster a sense of community and collaboration. By working together and building trust and respect, you can create a positive and effective team environment that leads to success both on and off the field

As a psychologist, I work on a fundamental maxim - fish swim, birds fly, and humans feel. To build effective relationships its imperative to understand the depth and breadth of the 'humans feel' phenomenon. Practising empathetic listening to understand the concerns and perspectives of your team captains, can be the first step. Empathy fosters a sense of connection and trust, creating a positive foundation for the relationship. Listening to understand and not merely responding distinguishes empathic listening from just listening.

- Role Clarity: Clearly outline the specific roles and responsibilities of team captains. This includes their duties during games, practices, and team events. - Upholding Standards: Communicate the standards & values they should model. Emphasize the importance of representing the team's ethos both on and off the field. - Effective Communication: Guide them on how to communicate effectively with you, their teammates, & staff. This includes being clear, respectful, and constructive. - Conflict Management: Instruct on handling conflicts & challenges. They should be adept at mediating disputes & maintaining team harmony. - Feedback Reception: Explain how they should approach receiving & giving feedback, ensuring it's constructive & helpful.

Build an Emotional Connection: Strive to build more than a professional rapport; work on creating a genuine emotional connection with your team captains. Understand their motivations, challenges, and aspirations on a personal level. By fostering an emotional connection, you establish a deeper bond that goes beyond the formalities of leadership. This connection not only strengthens trust but also contributes to a more supportive and unified team environment. Building an emotional connection involves actively listening to their concerns, celebrating personal achievements, and showing empathy in challenging times. This approach creates a foundation for a positive and lasting connection with your team captains.

Building a positive relationship with team captains involves open communication and mutual respect. Regular one-on-one meetings provide a platform to understand their perspectives and concerns. For example, in international football, a coach may engage with the team captain to discuss strategies or address any team dynamics. This collaborative approach fosters trust and ensures that the captain feels valued, contributing to a positive team culture. Recognizing their leadership role and acknowledging their input can enhance the overall effectiveness of the team.

Communication is certainly key when working on maintaining positive relationships with your team captains, whether there is a big win or a big loss or some big news/new development that comes up that could affect the business, it’s important to make them aware so that they are ready to help/plan ahead for anything that could affect the team. When you communicate more regularly you will be trusted even more leading to more positive relationships with your team leaders.

Trust is best built through actions, not just words. Say you have a player who struggles with personal or performance issues and approaches you as the coach. First, do your best to help the player yourself. Second, advise them to also go speak to the team captain about the issue because you trust them and they can provide some unique perspective that you as a coach cannot. Captains will now recognize your trust through your actions.

Do not forget to coach your team captain like all the other players. Because you have a special relationship with them and communicate more about team and holistic issues, coaches sometimes forget to coach their captains just like any other player. Try to demand the same from them as you do from everybody else: Not more, not less. Captains as well as the rest of the team will appreciate that.
