There’s always a new subject which might be the next one to create some waves in the payments ocean, sometimes it just vanishes and other times it creates an awesome impulse to have an innovation journey on top of it. Subjects and concepts need maturity, feasibility and practical application to get use cases into a real world operation and that might take time. Let’s consider AI, it has been in payments for a while powering risk management and adding security to transactions and onboarding processes and now it’s noticed for those purposes or other ones. Keep the mind open and use critical thinking to focus on the useful trends.

In 2019, I actively enrolled in the Certificate in Finance and Technology Program by IFTA & UK CFT. Successfully passing all three levels, I fulfilled the requirements for the CFT designation by demonstrating competence in finance and technology. This continuous education experience has been invaluable, motivating me to pursue additional knowledge and professional qualifications. Continuous learning is actually embedded into fintech given the ongoing innovation. Following fintech innovation globally can be quite consuming, so one can choose to focus and specialise on a particular space: say payments, credit scores etc. I have also personally felt the need for a strong understanding of the regulatory aspects of financial services. Here, one could try and find an online course on financial regulations in a particular market to start with and then narrow it down to the specialisation focus area (chosen as above).

Conferences (especially any event larger than 300 people) these days are less about learning and more about networking and vendors. Event learning has changed. There are still some high quality webinars that I recommend.

The VUCA world directly coexist in fintech. Since economic macro and activities can have a huge impact on the day to day of fintechs, the world view is critical. As an active practitioner who directly works with the regulator based plays, and where multiple stakeholders come in, the only way to survive is to reflect. Keep on reflecting and adapting. This way, a lot of times we are ahead of the game where the rest may get it wrong. For us, it’s more rights and less wrongs. So my advice is to be nimble, observant and ready to adapt at any point in time .

One key lesson I’ve learned from working with FinTech companies is the crucial role of adaptation in a rapidly evolving industry. Many startups fail to reach the market because they are overtaken by established players with greater development resources. Reflecting on your experiences and insights as an industry expert is valuable, but it’s equally important to quickly implement your new skills and knowledge. Time is of the essence; act swiftly before others seize the opportunity.
