I understand that life gets in the way , family obligations come up suddenly- a sick parent, a broken arm, a sudden school run- so my team has the flexibility to work around their schedules as long as deliverables are met . One thing I have found helpful is to really meet in person with your remote team members atleast once whenever you get a chance. That brings in a lot of perspective and understanding about how that team member operates, what is the social style and what will work best to take them along. Dedicated time spent in person will give a boost to your remote interactions and set it on right course. Even if you have to travel for this, it is worth it. Human interaction is not a cliche, it is a required catalyst for remote teams' functioning, as I have found out in the last decade or so!
