You're a UX Research leader. What do you need to know to lead your team effectively?

Familiarize yourself with the principles of user-centered design .This includes understanding user needs, behavior, and preferences to create products and services that meet their requirements and expectations.

To lead a UX research team effectively: Understanding various research methods. Knowing human behaviour and psychology. Analysing data proficiently. Using UX research tools efficiently. Communicating clearly with stakeholders. Managing and motivating team members. Aligning research goals with business objectives. Practicing empathy towards users and team. Staying adaptable to industry changes. Upholding ethical research standards.

Collaborate with your team to develop a comprehensive briefing document encompassing project elements such as goals, objectives, hypotheses, and success metrics. Prioritise the utilisation of this briefing document when initiating new projects. Use it as a reverse brief during stakeholder interactions to guarantee the inclusion of all essential information for a streamlined project execution. Conduct regular updates and check-ins to confirm the ongoing relevance of the document for everyone on the team, making necessary updates as required.

When leading and managing my team I often refer back to Russ Laraway's book "When They Win, You Win" for the most straight forward advice on aligning goals. The third part of his ingenious formula/framework for leadership is Aligned results. While aligning goals sounds the same, the results alignment is often forgotten. Aligning goals of your team and it's team members to the organization and ultimately the results that come from their work will lead to great success. This is a lot of work. What has worked best for me and my team is spending part of our weekly time together reviewing our work and constantly iterating and adjusting our approach with our minds focused on the outcome we are trying to acheive.

To lead my team effectively, I need to understand our goals clearly—what we're trying to achieve with our research. It's crucial for me to know the strengths and weaknesses of each team member so I can delegate tasks appropriately. I also need to stay up-to-date with UX research methodologies to ensure we're using the best approaches. Communication skills are essential for aligning the team, stakeholders, and ensuring our findings are understood and acted upon. Lastly, I have to be adaptable, as research can often uncover unexpected insights that may shift our direction.

Some of the greatest leaders I have worked with have been what you might call "Servant Leaders". They support the team with what they need but their superpower comes from an approach that is more nuanced. They not only provide vision for the team but empower their team to co-create the vision. They understood the benefits of having the team set their goals and objectives. The greatest benefit of all is the feeling of ownership the team member's feel when they start work each day.

In UX research leadership, it's important to let your team own their work and use their skills and ideas. This includes giving them freedom to be creative and grow, while also being there to help when they need it. When you empower your team like this, they'll feel proud of their work, stay motivated, and succeed.

I believe in maximizing potential. Understand the strength of each team member and use it to advantage. Research is incredibly complicated at times. We often work in ambiguity and are expected to answer hairy questions through the research we conduct. A skill that I find has helped me navigate the ambiguity myself and has helped my team overall has been our ability to adapt to new circumstances. We are flexible in our work to make room for any urgent or new priority that may come our way. We don't drop everything we are doing but we make sure that we can prioritize what is coming up next with great speed.
