What are the most important qualities for managing a winery?

1) Passion for wine: A deep appreciation for the art of winemaking and a love for all things wine is essential for a successful manager. 2) Business savvy: Managing a winery involves making strategic decisions, budgeting, and marketing the product, so a solid understanding of business principles is crucial. 3) Attention to detail: Winemaking is a precise process that requires close monitoring and meticulous attention to detail, from the vineyards to the bottling process. 4) Leadership: Managing a team of vineyard workers, cellar masters, and sales staff requires strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate and inspire others.

Without good alround business skills and an understanding of loss and profit, a passion for wine will not necessarily allow you to survive in a highly competitive industry. Let's face it, some of the most successful wine brands aren't that impressive in quality.

After a number of years in senior positions at various wineries, the one thing that stands out to me is the diversity of skill sets that one has to master to properly address the multiple facets of leadership. Leading a team at a winery can often mean working with a non-homogeneous group. Various departments have different priorities, sometimes attached to the growing season, sometimes dependent on consumer trends. Being able to provide a collaborative and effective leadership with a highly varied group of employees, contractors and partners means having to adapt and learn on the go. Especially if a winery is your first leadership rodeo!

In my experience consistency is key in wineries and, especially In smaller wineries, in many cases there’s a discrepancy between their “storytelling” (internal and external) and the way they actually behave in everyday tasks and towards coworkers. I’ve seen leaders preaching sustainability and environmental friendly processes in the winery, but then printing every single email they receive or file they work on and even getting mad at employees who don’t behave the same way, waisting tons of papers. If you’re a leader your behavior is the first example and that sets the tone of your credibility and builds the confidence the team will have in you: being a leader and being a boss are two completely different levels.
