As your product grows you should consdier "breaking" your product up into smaller products and installing product managers at the sub-product level. You still need someone that has responsibility for the product over all. One of the models I like to use I call "junior doctors", this is where product managers at the sub-product level "do the rounds" to gain exposure to each of the sub-products and also understanding the dependencies between each product. Eventually, using this model, you create one or more members of the team that is able to understand the product overall and assume responsibility for the product should this be required.
