One of the key skills to being a successful ERP person is having a proper understanding of business processes. Starting your ERP journey with a focus only on technical aspects will lead to a lot of struggles. Having basic understanding of the business processes, will help the individual to be well grounded, more tactical in problem solving, understand the system more easily, and gain more confidence with the clients. Furthermore, it is easier for someone who understands the basics of business process as it relates to the ERP, and data flow to advance from a functional to a technical consultant.

First and foremost, before even diving into the technical aspects of an ERP software, learn and understand the macro business processes. Macro business processes include three major functions a. Procurement and inventory b. Sales and distribution c. Finance and accounting It is imperative that as a professional you have a good grasp on these because it will help you a lot when you start mapping the business processes onto the ERP system and start having daily conversation with your clients. The ERP space is very competitive. A good thing to have on paper is a certification. But remember, it's just a piece of paper and would do you no good if you lack the hands on experience. Based on the observations that accounting software provides the features which are the most needed by firms and that an ERP has much more elaborate features and other capabilities justifying the difference in their prices, it can be inferred that the most commonly used ERP modules are General Ledger, Cash Management, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Inventory Management, Purchasing and Sales Order Processing with performance dashboards. Payroll is a localized module as it depends on country-specific labour laws and regulations. It can be a third-party software used as a stand-alone application or interfaced with the ERP which includes other HR modules like Staff Administration. A vertical solution is industry-specific like Mining ERP.
