Invite people for a coffee! I was in the film industry for 10 years and whenever someone wanted my advice and just wanted to grab a quick coffee, I always found some time for them. Reach out to those who you admire in the film industry and you'll be hopefully positively surprised! Film festivals are lovely too, I miss them.

Building rapport is necessary. Throughout my career I've learned that people tend to work with others of who they know and have history with. So the power of networking is real and can help land great opportunities, especially in the film industry. -RTJ

I make sure to show up. That means, I don't miss appointments & I engage online with people I work with and people I HOPE to work with. And, what think is most important these days, is to show up at every relevant event I can. I go to Emmy and Oscar events and in-person seminars. When I go to these events, I research attendees and speakers I don't know personally and make a point of saying hello and engaging in a meaningful conversation. Meaningful, thoughtful, personal, engaging. These are key words for me. I don't go to these events to be a social butterfly. It's not a kiss-kiss-love-you-mean-it kind of event for me. I am there to be present and available to others. Then, online interactions are more meaningful. I am more "real" to them.

In my experience, one of the best ways is to look for opportunities to assist established professionals on projects. Even a small role can give you valuable experience and build relationships. Another way is to look for film production courses taught by industry professionals. These instructors typically have extensive experience and connections. They can provide valuable information about the industry and potentially write recommendations or even connect you with opportunities. Remember, successful networking is about building genuine connections, focus on providing value and learning from others. Follow up with contacts on social media or professional networking sites like LinkedIn and maintain a positive, professional relationship.

Social content is the king now and the storytelling skill is going to be the most valuable element, so it’s our chance as filmmakers to ise our storytelling skills

Something I've found is a great idea is volunteering to work on movie sets. Being around, in any capacity, to witness the process is a great way to learn about how films are made, and an even better way to network and build connections with people in the industry.

Volunteer frequently on film sets or at film festivals to connect with industry professionals and showcase your dedication. By offering your time and skills, you gain practical experience and demonstrate your eagerness to learn and contribute. This proactive approach leaves a lasting impression on filmmakers and production crews, potentially leading to paid opportunities and strong referrals down the line.

Here I’ll say this: while getting the opportunity to directly see how a set functions is valuable, as is the relationship building that can come from volunteering, be careful not to get caught in a loop of unpaid opportunities. Even at an entry level, your work (and your time) had value. Those of us who work in this industry already should pay you for your time. It’s unethical to take advantage of your interest in this industry and use that to leverage free labor. If it’s a friend’s short film or you’re getting school credit, unpaid is OK. If you want to shadow somebody on a bigger set, that’s also great. But if you’re doing the work of a PA (or any other typically paid position), you deserve compensation (even if it’s your first time).

Mentorship helped me a ton earlier in my career and in continues to help me now. As we are all always learning, receiving mentorship doesn’t necessarily ever end, exactly - although who mentors you (and with regard to what) may shift over time. And providing a service by being a mentor yourself can be a great gift both to the mentee and to yourself. We all get further together and nobody starts off knowing everything they need to know to do what they set out to do. Virtuous cycles of mutual aid create the best version we can hope to have of our industry. Don’t be shy about reaching out to folks you admire about this sort of help. They know how to manage their time. Be respectful and be direct about what you want.

Following up after meeting new contacts is essential to reinforce connections. Send personalized messages expressing gratitude for their time and reiterating your interest in staying in touch. If potential collaborations or job opportunities were discussed, mention them. Regularly check in to share project updates or congratulate them on achievements, demonstrating ongoing engagement and appreciation for the relationship.

Everyone gets busy and it is much easier to focus on what’s in front of each of us than to think back to an interaction we had some time ago. When an opportunity arises, those most present in our minds are likeliest to be the ones we reach out to as we look for candidates to consider. This can be achieved while being respectful of our time. It’s about balance - the balance between persistence and pleasantry. Keep up a cadence of outreach that reminds your contacts you’re there, but doesn’t overwhelm their inboxes. Reach out not just to ask for things from them, but at least occasionally just with an update and to wish them well. Treat them the way you would want to be treated in their position.

Stay engaged with your network by maintaining regular communication, regardless of job searches. Connect via social media, emails, or industry events to share resources, introduce contacts, and offer support. This ongoing engagement keeps you top-of-mind when opportunities arise, strengthening your network for future collaborations and career advancement.

I think you should consider joining an improv group that performs on a regular basis. Movie makers and the advertising industry tend to look to the smaller communities to recruite talent. You will also have ample opportunity to network.

Keep working. Do the thing you want to be doing, even on a small scale. Most of the 'networking' opportunities the above recommends has two kinds of people at them, in my experience. 1. Workers. These people are always working on something, even if it isn't profitable. They're connected because they are busy, and often genuinely connecting with others who share the same drive. They're good at working and terrible at networking, and that tends to be what we like about them. 2. NetWorkers. These people are hoping to find work through social networking. They tend to be seeking connection because they aren't doing what they love and believe this is the way to find work. It's not. Nobody likes networking.
