How can you build trust with underrepresented groups?

Building trust in underrepresented groups requires relinquishing power, which begins with acknowledging and addressing power imbalances. This involves recognizing existing inequities and committing to actively repair them by relinquishing power and involving underrepresented groups in decision-making. Open and honest dialogue about power dynamics, coupled with transparency and accountability, is essential. This commitment to equity, inclusion and belonging is key to building and maintaining trust in underrepresented groups.

These communities understand their problems better and already even know the solutions to these problems. Understanding their struggles, their history and cultures is key. Also, acknowledging that they already have assets, skills and knowledge is also very important. You need to provide a safe space for them to honestly express their views and not impose solutions on them as if they have nothing.

To build trust with underrepresented groups, listen, learn, acknowledge privilege, be genuine, involve them, support their causes, take action, build relationships, be accountable, and seek feedback. Everything listed involves intentionality and/or deliberate action.

To me, building trust with underrepresented groups, actually building trust with anyone, starts with taking time to listen and get to know them - to learn about who they are, what they've experienced, and not dismiss their (our) perspectives just because they don't mirror your own. Also take the time and effort to reach out to them, welcome them, and make sure they are being included. Reach out to many people in these communities recognizing we are all a diverse collective with our own perspectives and experiences which should be valued and respected. And finally if you see issues and/or systematic barriers restricting access - speak up, address them. Don't force those of us in underrepresented groups to have to do the heavy lifting!

The best way to learn what a client needs is to simply ask them. Also provide me with a formal and comprehensive way to conduct the customers needs.

I think transparency is about being open and accountable, honesty is about telling the truth, and authenticity is about being true to oneself. The benefits of having transparent communication increases collaboration. This also enhances trust.

Don’t give them a forum to bring ideas only. It should be real. It can not be a venting venue. Give them the authority and the tools to make it happen. Many good ideas get lost in the second guessing and in the lack of empowerment. The cycle goes on and the risk of losing talent and restarting the process is very real.

This absolutely can move the needle! There voice must be heard, and then see action with their recommendations. If you’re going to ask for the recommendations, they need to see something authentically occurring with the recommendations.
