You're struggling to gain trust with a new physician. How can you encourage collaboration?
Building trust with a new physician is crucial for a successful collaborative relationship. It can be daunting, especially if you're new to the team or if the physician is highly experienced. The key is to approach the situation with respect, patience, and a willingness to learn. By demonstrating your competence, being proactive in communication, and showing genuine interest in the physician's expertise, you can lay the groundwork for a strong partnership. Remember that trust is built over time through consistent, positive interactions. So, even if it doesn't happen overnight, persistence and a positive attitude will go a long way in fostering collaboration with a new physician.

All good communication and productive meetings have one thing in common... Understanding. Whether you are just having hallway chat, on a committee, or in a productive meeting all the parties need to understand where each other is coming from. This includes what is their TITLE, ROLE, and PURPOSE. knowing those 3 things helps provide a solid foundation of understanding, greatly reducing the risk of misunderstandings and conflicts.

Every time a patient knocks on my door, at that moment I give him my full attention, empathy in the treatment and exploration have marked my way as a doctor, since my patients and I create a dynamic as a doctor-patient much closer that allows us to help each other to solve their case. so if I could sum it up I could summarize two pillars in the treatment: EMPATHY AND PATIENCE.
Clear communication is the cornerstone of any collaborative effort. When engaging with a new physician, ensure that your messages are concise and focused on patient care. Avoid medical jargon unless it's commonly understood, and always clarify any points of uncertainty. Active listening is equally crucial; it demonstrates respect for the physician's expertise and helps to build rapport. Remember, effective communication involves both speaking and listening, and it's a two-way street that fosters trust and understanding.

I'm going to skip the subject matter of the conversation as that is the easy part. Because we all know what we are talking about and what we want to say. The difficulty is the ENCODING and DECODING in the conversation. What you say (encoding) may not be perceived by the other party (decoding) in the same way. Meaning they may think you mean something other than what you actually mean. Situational awareness is key! Don't catch people off guard or jump right into a conversation. Make sure you both have time to talk and are on the same page.

Clear communication is the cornerstone of a good medical consultation, if as doctors we do not put ourselves in a place where our patient understands most of our words or even make them reason what we are saying, where is the chance that the treatment will be successful?
Taking initiative can be a powerful way to build trust with a new physician. Offer your insights when appropriate and be willing to assist with tasks beyond your usual scope when needed. This proactive approach shows that you're invested in patient care and the team's success. However, be mindful not to overstep or undermine the physician's authority. Your goal is to be seen as a reliable and supportive team member who enhances the physician's ability to provide the best possible care.

Mostrar iniciática pode ser uma boa estratégia, mas é muito dependente do perfil do novo médico. A iniciativa em excesso pode afastar ainda mais o médico. Muito cuidado com essa estratégia. Entenda antes o perfil do mesmo

Let's be honest, it can be intimidating talking with a physician, especially on a professional level. One good step is to take initiative. Doing this the right way can gain respect and change their perspective of you and/or your thoughts. Be sure when you take initiative you are respectful and prepared. Respectful - consider their time, schedule, responsibilities, knowledge, experience, and be aware of your tone. Prepared - do your homework/research on the subject matter, consider the variables, show you have put forth an effort and are not wasting their time.

Being trustworthy is not just about keeping secrets, working on being trustworthy as a physician is about being accurate and gradually ... gaining trust by taking the initiative on things and cases that allow us to improve as people and doctors.
Reliability is key in any professional relationship. Consistently following through on tasks and being punctual for shifts and meetings will show the new physician that you're dependable. When you say you will do something, make sure you deliver. This predictability in your behavior will help the physician feel comfortable relying on you, which is a critical step in building trust. Over time, this reliability will solidify your reputation as a valuable and trustworthy member of the healthcare team.

Confiança nunca é demais. Todo membro de equipe deve ser confiável. O grande desafio é ganhar a confiança. Esse é um processo lento e difícil. Qualquer deslize põe tudo a perder. Sempre haja com ética e de forma decente. A fama corre de forma rápida tanto para o lado bom quanto para o ruim.
In the ever-evolving field of healthcare, continuous learning is essential. Show the new physician that you're committed to staying updated on the latest best practices and medical knowledge. Engage in professional development opportunities and be open to feedback from the physician. This eagerness to learn not only improves your own skills but also demonstrates your dedication to providing the best care alongside the physician. When you're both learning from each other, it creates a dynamic environment that encourages collaboration.

It doesn't matter what your job title is, what you do, or where you are on the hierarchy within the healthcare system... you always have something to learn. Whether you are a CNA or a board-certified neurosurgeon, you do not know everything, and I believe you can learn something from anyone. Remember this and never stop learning.
Offering support to a new physician can take many forms, from providing relevant patient information to lending an empathetic ear after a challenging case. When you show genuine concern for the physician's experience and workload, it can help alleviate some of their stress. This supportive attitude fosters a team-oriented atmosphere where the physician knows they can count on you. In turn, this can lead to increased trust and a more collaborative working relationship.
