In my marketing journey, I've learned to view SEM strategy like managing a bustling kitchen: -->Quick wins priority: Focusing on quick wins, like tweaking keywords or fixing ad extensions, delivers immediate impact. --> Address core issues: Guided by metrics like Quality Score, prioritize fixing key issues causing the most damage. -->Team insights valuable: Listening to our team in the trenches provides invaluable insights. -->Simplicity drives success: Concentrating on 2-3 key areas prevents overwhelming changes that can backfire. -->Track, Adapt & Improve: Regular checks pivot strategies—continuous improvement remains our goal. Adaptability, collaboration, and continuous improvement are the pillars of SEM success.

Often times when we work with clients they have unrealistic expectations or sales has overpromised results. It would be productive to have conversations with the client and be transparent about the industry benchmarks and the competition they face in their vertical. We can control internal factors within our advertising bidding platforms, but with external factors such as seasonality and CRO for landing pages they should be reviewed with efforts for improvement. If it's not convenient for the customer complete their journey whether it is a phone call, form fill or purchase transaction we must alleviate the pain points. It is as important as following best practices in your bidding platforms and incremental changes immensely improve results.

In my experience in SEM below pointers are the ones played crucial part. 1. Start with campaign types that gives you instant lead traction and simultaneously optimise the ones which gives you good results slowly in a longer run. 2. Three important metrics which should be kept in check for SEM campaigns Ad relevance, Quality Score & Landing page experience these play vital role in deciding user journey. 3. Actively seek feedback from your seniors and fellow team members for invaluable insights. 4. From time to time evaluate your campaigns with industry benchmarks to stay on par/ahead of our competitors.

The next step is to define what you want to achieve and how you'll measure your progress. Set SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals for your team that align with your overall business objectives. For example, you might want to increase your click-through rate (CTR), lower your cost per acquisition (CPA), or boost your conversions by a certain percentage or number within a specific timeframe. Make sure your goals are clear, realistic, and challenging enough to motivate your team.

Setting SEM goals is like plotting a roadmap. First, define success—be specific. For instance, aim for a 20% increase in conversions in three months. Numbers make it tangible. Break down the big goal into smaller, actionable steps. If it's conversions, consider improving click-through rates or optimizing landing pages. Now, involve your team. Ask for their input. In my experience, team buy-in ensures everyone is rowing in the same direction. Use past performance as a benchmark. If you've hit a 15% increase before, 20% is a stretch but doable. Keep it challenging yet achievable. Lastly, don't forget regular check-ins. Goals are dynamic. If you're halfway there and see it's too ambitious, adjust. Flexibility is key. Happy goal-setting!

It's important to set realistic goals and more important is to make team realise that the goal is achievable. Show them the big picture and ask every team member to create their own pathways to achieve the goal. At the end the team will have so many different pathways that will help achieving the goal and the best part of this exercise is the team is contributing and each team member is participating.

When we talk about SEM objectives, we always start by looking at the actual business objective we are trying to achieve. In my experience, in most cases it is the imprecise, incomplete definition of the objectives that causes the potential dissatisfaction that can arise later. Once these strategic objectives have been defined, the next step is to break them down into measurable and relevant KPIs so that we can really work within a framework that sits at the intersection of business and professional interests. Of course, this requires a team that is not only skilled in managing marketing channels, but also able to understand and translate business needs into technology solutions.

Define specific, measurable objectives for your SEM campaign, such as increasing click-through rates by a certain percentage or reducing cost per acquisition.Ensure goals are aligned with broader marketing and business objectives.Establish a timeline for achieving these goals, considering the typical pace of changes in SEM performance.
The third step is to prioritize the most impactful and urgent actions that will help you reach your goals. You might have a long list of things to do, but not all of them are equally important or feasible. Use a prioritization matrix or framework, such as the Eisenhower matrix or the RICE score, to rank your tasks based on their value, effort, risk, and urgency. Focus on the ones that will deliver the highest return on investment (ROI) and address the most critical issues.

When things need a turnaround, prioritize actions like a chef managing a busy kitchen. Identify the low-hanging fruit – quick wins that can boost morale. Maybe it's tweaking high-traffic keywords or fixing ad extensions. Next, tackle issues causing the most damage. Look at metrics like Quality Score and conversion rates. It's like fixing a leaky roof before redecorating. Listen to your team. They're in the trenches and their insights are gold. Keep it simple. Don't try to fix everything at once. Focus on 2-3 key areas. In my experience, too many simultaneous changes can backfire. Lastly, track progress. If something's not working, pivot. Continuous improvement is the name of the game.

Revisit and clarify the SEM goals, ensuring they align with overall business objectives. This provides a clear direction for prioritization. Identify and implement quick-win strategies that can swiftly improve performance without requiring significant resources or time. Focus on high-impact areas that directly influence SEM performance. This might involve optimizing key ad campaigns, refining keyword targeting, or improving landing page experiences.

Identify and prioritize the most impactful areas for improvement by analyzing data and performance indicators.Focus on optimizing keywords, ad copy, and landing pages that contribute significantly to your campaign's success.Consider the potential impact of external factors, such as seasonality or industry trends, when prioritizing actions.
The fourth step is to assign roles and responsibilities to your team members and collaborate effectively. You can't do everything by yourself, and you need to leverage the skills, expertise, and creativity of your team. Delegate tasks according to your team members' strengths, interests, and availability. Communicate your expectations, deadlines, and feedback clearly and regularly. Encourage your team to share their ideas, opinions, and suggestions. Use tools and platforms that facilitate teamwork and coordination, such as Slack, Asana, or Google Workspace.

Managing an SEM team is like orchestrating a band. First, assess each team member's strengths and weaknesses. Delegate tasks based on individual skills. If someone excels in ad copy, let them own it. Divide and conquer. Encourage collaboration. Use regular check-ins to share insights and challenges. Assign clear roles. Each team member should know their part in the performance. Like a band member has their instrument, your team should have specific responsibilities. Rotate tasks occasionally. Cross-training is key. This way, team members understand each other's roles, fostering a more cohesive unit. Remember, communication is the backbone. Like a band needs harmony, your team needs clear, open communication.

Assign specific tasks to team members based on their expertise and strengths, fostering a collaborative environment.Encourage open communication and knowledge-sharing within the team to leverage collective insights.Regularly review progress and adjust responsibilities as needed to adapt to emerging challenges or opportunities.
The fifth step is to test and optimize your SEM campaigns based on data and feedback. You need to track and measure your performance against your goals and benchmarks. Use tools and methods, such as Google Analytics, Google Ads, A/B testing, or heatmaps, to collect and analyze data on your keywords, ads, landing pages, and conversions. Identify what's working and what's not. Experiment with different variables, such as headlines, images, copy, calls to action, or offers. Optimize your campaigns based on the results and best practices.

Test different angles. For example, you can test running sub-services as a campaign alongside the core services. If you are an interior design company, you can run a toilet renovation as a standalone campaign.

Testing and optimizing campaigns is crucial. Start with a solid foundation, then tweak for perfection. Use Google Analytics to track clicks, conversions, and bounce rates. Explore A/B testing. Compare two versions of an ad or landing page. See what resonates with your audience. Google Ads Editor is your tuning peg. Bulk edits save time. Adjust bids, ad copy, or keywords efficiently. Check Search Query Reports like a musician tuning by ear. It reveals what users are searching for, helping you refine keywords. Heatmaps add flavor. Tools like Crazy Egg show where users click. Optimize based on hotspots. Lastly, set up conversion tracking. Know what's working and amplify it.

Implement A/B testing for ad creatives, landing pages, and other elements of your SEM campaign to identify what resonates best with your audience.Continuously monitor performance metrics and use data-driven insights to refine and optimize your SEM strategy.Experiment with different bidding strategies, ad placements, and targeting options to uncover opportunities for improvement.Stay abreast of industry trends and algorithm changes, adjusting your approach to align with the evolving landscape.Foster a culture of innovation and experimentation within your team, encouraging the exploration of new tactics and technologies to enhance SEM effectiveness.
The sixth and final step is to celebrate and learn from your achievements and challenges. Recognize and reward your team's efforts and accomplishments. Celebrate the milestones and successes, no matter how big or small. Share your learnings and insights with your team and stakeholders. Identify the key takeaways and lessons that will help you improve your future SEM campaigns. Keep learning and growing as a team and as an SEM leader.

Fostering a culture of testing and learning is crucial. If you're not reaching your targets, it means something is not working. Maybe your strategies aren't performing as expected. If the team knows they can experiment freely, they will experiment other ways to hit the SEM targets, rather than stick to the strategies that don't work. But they need to know they can experiment and sometimes fail. Only by doing this they can find winning strategies. On the other hand, experimenting should be balanced by a culture of always learning something from those experiments. A campaign is only truly failed if nothing was learned from it.

Another idea is to approach the situation from a data POV. Reevaluate the data used for segmentation. Ensure it's accurate and up-to-date.Analyze the performance metrics associated with each segment to identify any patterns or discrepancies.

I scaled my brand to 8-figures with Google Ads. Now I help others do the same.
1. Create a QS framework that ensures quality. Break down every step of optimization. 2. Incentives adherence to the framework through rewards. Either monetary, gifts or benefits.
