What do you do if feedback is ignored at work?

In such situations, It's important to use judgement rather than directly coming to conclusions. There might be several reasons for which the feedback got ignored. The best approach would be - 1. A gentle reminder - A slight reminder might help the concerned person to change his/her approach. 2. Lack of clarity - There might be a possibility that the feedback is not clear and additional guidance is needed. 3. One on one meeting - It is important to talk to the concerned person and analyse the reason for the same behaviour. If there is any confusion , take time to address his concerns , provide feedback and align his personal goals with the organisation.

If your feedback is being ignored, try to put yourself in the recipient's shoes. There could be various reasons why they're not acting on your input: They may be overwhelmed with other priorities They might not fully understand the importance or implications of your feedback There could be organizational constraints or conflicting directives They may have a different perspective on the issue at hand By seeking to understand their point of view, you can tailor your approach and potentially find common ground.

Begin by understanding the context. Why was the feedback ignored? Is it a recurring issue or an isolated incident? One of my clients, a project manager, received feedback about micromanaging. Instead of dismissing it, we explored the underlying stressors causing this behavior. We discovered that tight deadlines and lack of trust were contributing factors.

One thing I found helpful is to be open-minded, do not make it personal and remember that not all feedback is or can be acted on immediately... most times and in most organisation's there are channels which must be consulted before actioning or implementing/ addressing matters.

Before assuming that others are simply ignoring your input, it's essential to critically examine your own feedback methods. Ask yourself: Is your feedback clear, specific, and actionable? Are you providing feedback in a constructive and non-threatening manner? Are you choosing the right time and place to offer your insights? Are you balancing positive feedback with areas for improvement? Sometimes, the issue may lie in how the feedback is delivered rather than in its content. Ensure that your approach is professional, empathetic, and focused on solutions rather than blame.

Seek clarity on the feedback. Sometimes, it’s misinterpreted or lacks specificity. An engineer , my client received vague feedback about “improving communication.” We worked together to identify specific areas (e.g., team meetings, email updates) and practiced effective communication techniques.

Respect the organizational structure. If you’re not the direct supervisor, escalate the issue appropriately. A junior team member felt ignored by their manager. We discussed approaching the team lead and expressing their concerns professionally. The team lead addressed the issue promptly.

Understand why the feedback recipient ignored it. Is there fear, resistance, or lack of awareness? One of my clients is, a sales executive resisted feedback on adapting to digital tools. We provided training sessions, emphasizing the benefits. Gradually, they embraced the change.

Encourage self-reflection. Why did the feedback trigger defensiveness? I remember a colleague, an HR manager received feedback about being overly critical. We explored their perfectionist tendencies and discussed self-compassion. They learned to balance high standards with empathy.

Sometimes, the medium is as important as the message. If verbal feedback isn't effective, try putting your thoughts in writing through an email or a shared document. This can provide the recipient with time to process the information and respond thoughtfully. Alternatively, if written communication isn't working, request a face-to-face meeting or a video call to discuss the matter more personally.
