How can you use your product management strengths?

As a Senior Product Development Manager, I ensure the success of our products through strategic planning, team collaboration, customer focus, data-driven decision-making, risk management, and guidance and support for my team. I set clear directions for our products, facilitate smooth collaboration between different teams, prioritize our customers' needs, use data to inform our decisions, identify and address potential risks, and help my team grow and succeed. With these strengths, I ensure that our products meet and exceed expectations, delighting our customers and driving the success of our company.

Identifying strengths is more than a self-assessment; it's a journey into self-awareness. Utilizing tools like the Product Skills Matrix is just the beginning. Engaging in honest conversations with mentors, attending workshops, and even understanding failures can provide a nuanced view of one's strengths. It's about connecting dots between what you love, what you're good at, and where you can add unique value.

There are so many helpful tools at your disposal to really learn your skills, strengths and weaknesses. It can also be helpful to use these tools as a group to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your team as it will aide in productive communication across your team. Likewise, getting feedback directly from previous bosses and co-workers about times where you excel can be very enlightening. Being able to identify your strengths can also help guide you in a career search to know the types of organizations where your skillset and strengths will help you succeed.

Being honest with yourself is the first step! Not everybody (or anybody) is going to enter Product and instantly know it all. Taking the time to TRULY self assess and identify where you're ahead of the curve and where you're underperforming will only help as you move forward and identify key areas to improve. This is a journey without a concrete finish line, so continually defining (and hopefully, reaching!) new finish lines along the way will help make a lot of this feel much more manageable

Lifelong learning. Yes, do not rest. Work on your weaknesses a to reduce them, even if it is difficult. You will only improve your skills, if you deal with it.

If you are in a position of leadership, it can be quite a compliment to ask someone on your team to help you. For example, I am not great at 'reading a room.' I like productive meetings and sometimes jump in without taking appropriate notice of the emotions. I partner with a team member who is high in empathy who can signal to me when I need to slow down. Likewise, I help her in areas of my strengths. It makes us both better.

While it's essential to capitalize on what you excel at, it's equally crucial to acknowledge and address your limitations. Striking this balance ensures that you don't become overly reliant on your strengths or neglect areas needing improvement. There is so much value in bringing up the next generation of Product Managers. I typically follow a version of the following when I am teaching a new PM a skill. (1) I do the work and they watch. (2) I do the talking and they do the work. (3) They do the work and I watch. (4) They are fully empowered, and of course, I am available for questions and support. I believe that taking the time to walk through those four steps ensures a great outcome. We must fight against the easy path of delegating without mentorship.

Being a Product Manager, expand your empathy not just with customers, but also with internal stakeholders. Understand your stakeholders’ priorities, concerns, and what makes them successful will help you negotiate a win-win strategy within your company when it comes to serving your customers as a team. Ask why’s not just to customers but also to your stakeholders to get to the bottom of why they pushback for a specific initiative or why can’t they support your feature request now. By showing empathy, you earn trust among your stakeholders.

Believe in the uniqueness of your product management strengths. Every product manager brings some unique strengths to the table. That is how a team is formed. After you have identified the strengths and before you get an opportunity to apply them in your day to day work, believe in your strengths first. This is also important that sometimes your identified strengths might not be directly be applicable to your current job. In that case, once you start believing in yourself, you can create more opportunities for yourself where your strengths could be capitalized.

In product management, your strengths are not just skills - they are the essence of who you are, the fuel that drives your success, and the key to making a real impact in the world. So embrace them, nurture them, and let them shine bright in everything you do.

More important than strengths is to recognize weaknesses. Being aware of areas where you’re not as strong helps you improve, learn, and maybe get support where needed, making you a more well-rounded professional.
