How can you become an effective ally for underrepresented groups?

I would say strengthen your learner agility; which is the ability to adapt quickly to new information. And this can involve you challenging your own assumptions about cultures and characteristics that are different to you. Take the time to reflect upon your understanding of, behaviour language and actions towards those that are a minority, underrepresented and marginalised. Be the change first.

To become an ally is to first become introspective on what it means to be the authentic self. To be authentic is to know oneself. To know thyself is to be in tune with your base, and from where you came. If you come from privilege, one has to be willing to become vulnerable and humble yourself. Humility is the first step towards connecting and understanding others who have experienced or were not born into privilege. For those who have toiled and worked hard and earned a place of privilege (despite not being born in this status), one must understand their responsibility to elevate and be an open-book example for others seeking an opportunity to take a step forward and up.

I don't use words like privilege because privilege is situational and fluid. I believe in four rules 1. Self determination 2. Education 3. Empowerment 4. Support When I engage, it is done with these four rules in mind.

Through ongoing education, allies expand their knowledge, challenge assumptions, and deepen their understanding, contributing to more meaningful support and advocacy.

1. Read books, articles, watch documentaries, subscribe to newsletters by/about underrepresented groups to understand different groups' experiences and challenges 2. Do an inventory of your SoMe following and make sure to follow diverse voices to gain insights and perspectives 3. Actively listen to the experiences and stories of individuals from underrepresented groups without dismissing their perspectives. 3. Attend diversity & inclusion workshops or seminars to enhance your awareness. FB-events, LinkedIn, Eventbrite, etc. 4.Initiate conversations with people from diverse backgrounds to broaden your understanding (ensure that the people you get in touch with are ok with sharing and do not assume that they are obliged to educate you)

Experience is the best teacher. Actually get to know real people. Ask relevant open ended question and listen attentively. Build meaningful relationships. Empathise. This can teach you so much more than reading any book can.

I think it is about networking with the right people. I have tried to create engaging social media posts to try and encapsulate what people with disabilities are thinking about what the priorities should be in the UK Government's Disability Action Plan. I have had hundreds of people view my posts- but no comments, which is the crucial part. It is about networking with people who can help you to communicate with the people you want to ask the questions to. I think it is then, and only then, that you will start moving in the right direction and start achieving on your aims.

We do allyship with equity-denied communities and not for equity-denied communities. This is very important because when you do things with people you realize that that they have agency, they have their own ideas, they know what they need. All that you need to do, is help in the way they tell you to help.

Listening is paramount in being an ally. It entails paying attention to others' thoughts and feelings without interrupting, judging, or imposing one's views. It also involves being receptive to feedback, criticism, or corrections and acknowledging mistakes or gaps in knowledge. Active listening utilizes both verbal and nonverbal cues such as eye contact, nodding, paraphrasing, and asking questions to demonstrate interest and respect. Through active listening, trust, rapport, and empathy can be built with underrepresented groups, while also learning from their insights and experiences.

En mi experiencia considero esencial poner en práctica dos recursos internos: 1. Escucha apreciativa ; abrir preguntas desde la curiosidad sobre la experiencia del grupo en el trabajo, en la vida. Dejar por un momento el título de grupo subrepresentado y conectar con el ser humano, descubrir las principales necesidades y pedidos que estén latentes. Siendo conscientes de los propios sesgos que podemos tener. 2. Autoconocimiento, reconocer de qué forma nos hemos sentido subrepresentados en nuestras vidas, explorar esa vivencia si la hubo, sentimientos asociados, preguntas, reflexiones y desde ese lugar tender puentes y alianzas más honestas.

Desenvolver a capacidade de ouvir é fundamental para se tornar um aliado eficaz. Ouvir verdadeiramente envolve estar presente para o que os outros estão compartilhando, suas emoções e pensamentos, sem interromper, julgar ou impor seus próprios pontos de vista. Além disso, significa estar receptivo a feedbacks, críticas ou correções, e reconhecer humildemente seus próprios erros ou lacunas de entendimento. Para praticar uma escuta ativa, é essencial usar tanto sinais verbais quanto não verbais, como manter contato visual, acenar com a cabeça, parafrasear ou fazer perguntas, demonstrando interesse genuíno e respeito. Ao adotar uma postura de escuta ativa, é possível construir confiança.

It highlights the importance of consistent support and solidarity beyond symbolic gestures. It emphasizes that true support for marginalized groups should lie not only in public expressions such as demonstrations, but also in everyday actions and long-term commitment. True allyship is not only present during visible activism events, but also acts in everyday decisions and interactions. This could mean actively speaking out against discrimination, challenging racist or discriminatory comments, advocating for inclusive practices in the workplace, and advocating for structural change. A true coherent and sustained commitment to justice and equality in order will have real impact on eliminating inequality and discrimination.

Furthermore, taking action involves concrete steps to support and empower underrepresented groups. This may include financial contributions, active involvement in nonprofit organizations, mentoring, or advocating for diversity and inclusion in the workplace. It's about taking responsibility and actively working towards a more just society. By combining voice and action, allies can play a significant role in driving social change and contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable world where everyone is heard and respected.

Me cansé de ser solo una voz que se perdía en el vacío, que no hacía ECO y que no generaba cambio, todos tenemos una voz que merece ser escuchada porque defiende nuestras más profundas creencias, pero nada de valor tendrían esas voces si no son coherentes con acciones que traigan cambios reales. No se trata de gritar más fuerte, se trata de ser parte activa de una voz comunitaria que se une a un fin.. Mi fin último es que las mujeres seamos protagonistas de la historia, dejando huellas y aportando el valor de las emociones al desarrollo de las organizaciones y su gente!!! ¿Te unes??

Collaboration is key. I’ve fallen into the trap of rushing to advocacy. Instead, ASK your friend or colleague if they’re comfortable with you advocating on their behalf. What are their specific goals? This can help you avoid assumptions about what would be best for others.

Ser um aliado não é só ouvir e aprender, mas também falar e agir. Falar é usar sua voz e privilégio para desafiar injustiças, amplificar vozes sub-representadas. Agir significa tomar medidas concretas, como doar, voluntariar ou colaborar. Ao falar e agir, faz diferença e promove mudança social.

Em geral como liderança o que mais temos que pode atrair o apoio de um sub-representados é ele conseguir ver o quanto pode aprender e evoluir com você. Isso pois ele está em construção de carreira. E depois de algum tempo quando ele perceber o quanto evoluiu e cresceu em conhecimento o quanto ele está firme com argumentações embasamentos técnicos bem feitos, isso lhe traz como liderança um apoio inigualável.

Mi experiencia en la construcción de Alianzas no había sido la mejor, siempre terminaba con una sensación de pérdida, en la que daba más de lo que recibía, en la que sentía que se aprovechaban de mí, hasta el día que comencé a dar sin sacar cuentas, a contribuir positiva y genuinamente en las alianzas, no por lo que podrían aportarme, sino por cómo mis aportes se multiplicaban solo porque no eran un esfuerzo solitarios sino un trabajo colaborativo, que suma y nunca resta

Structural Problems require structural solutions. Many allies act on an individual level but we need them to act on an institutional level as well. We need laws and policies and institutions and structures, that only those in power can establish and maintain, to create and sustain inclusion abd equity. All Allyship should have this as its goal. The end of all oppression and the creation of an inclusive and equitable society.
