Look for your boss and his peers to be excellent sources of information about your profession, a good leader wants to share their knowledge, they should have a passion about it, so right off, just by asking for such mentorship you learn something critical. They will either embrace the opportunity to share their knowledge and or collected wisdom gained from having years more experience, or you discover their not the leader you thought they were, and forewarned is forearmed, your 3-5 year plan, and where you want to work, may alter significantly.

During conversations with your boss, practice active listening. This means paying close attention, asking clarifying questions, and summarizing what you've heard to ensure understanding. By doing so, you demonstrate respect for their knowledge and show that you're eager to learn. Active listening can also help you absorb the nuances of emergency management that only come with experience.

Active listening is great, but make sure you have an established 1:1 meeting on a reoccurring basis. Be purposeful with that time, to not only go over current projects, but use that time to ask questions about their career and how they got to where they are now. Some of the best stories I've head from my bosses have occurred during our 1:1s.
