Identify what systems, data, and process are important to business and prioritize protection of these assets. Governance is very important, have governance structures to oversee the implementation of strategy. Use a risk management framework to prioritize risks based on their likelihood and impact. Focus on addressing the most critical risks first. Engage Leadership, department heads, and other key stakeholders in discussion and decisive approach.

Identify Assets and Threats: Catalog all critical assets, including data, systems, and networks. Identify potential threats to these assets, such as cyber attacks, insider threats, and natural disasters. Prioritize Risks: Rank risks based on their potential impact on the organization. Focus on mitigating the most significant risks first. Create a Roadmap: Develop a detailed plan outlining the steps needed to achieve your cybersecurity objectives. Enforce Policies: Use technical controls, such as access management systems and monitoring tools, to enforce policies. Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance. Adopt Advanced Technologies: Implement advanced cybersecurity technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML).

Policy development is a great start for any organization, however there is stronger need to take a deeper dive into defining technical implementation standards and controls which are derived through various policies. This method helps organization to measure the effectiveness of the policies. For example Policy:- "We will properly maintain our cloud assets" Control Objective:- "Organization fixes cloud misconfiguration in a timely manner" Standards:- "Misconfiguration must be fixed in 3 days" Control:- "Misconfiguration remediation plan is developed and implemented" Metrics:- "% of cloud assets missed 3 days SLA"

After assessing your risks, establish strong cybersecurity policies. These policies should be clear, thorough, and enforceable, detailing acceptable technology use, data handling protocols, and breach response plans. Regular review and updates are essential to align policies with evolving threats and business dynamics. Equally critical is educating employees on these policies to mitigate human error, a common vulnerability in cybersecurity defenses.

As a security leader you need to balance Security & Business goals, comply with regulatory, compliance & intl. Standards, assess security gaps, maturity of the tech stack, readiness etc., respond to vul., breaches, events, evaluate 3rd party risk, recover, transform based on evolving threat, technology landscape and last but not least revisit your security policies as thats how you guide and influence your employees and org. There are few other elements like awareness etc. But plan your business goals along these lines will help you navigate to a strategic program rather than a tactical approach. Additionally, a program gets BoD's approval.
