Avoid Drama You can note that the layoff was the result of a change in business conditions for the organization, or a restructuring, but don't go into details about specific issues or people. Focus on the impact you had and the results you created. That can be the best way to demonstrate your value to your next employer. The specific duties and responsibilities of your prior roles are largely irrelevant for your potential new organization. It's more about the measurable results you've generated... You may also want to look into volunteering with a local nonprofit or group where you can apply you skills. For instance, how you helped others, how you developed new skills, etc.

It can help to write yourself a script at first so that you can look more closely at how you are saying what you are saying. You want to cut out any blame, judgement, and/or making others wrong. Then practice telling some friends the story of all your learnings from the challenge. Remember, adaptability and resilience are leadership superpowers; release the negatives and celebrate how you have grown.

A good way to employ future focus is to tell your layoff story in the context of advancing to a specific future goal. This positions the layoff experience as an important part of your story that helped produce the progress that is propelling you towards your goal. This will be key in controlling how your interviewer thinks of you. Instead of thinking of you as a person who was laid off, they’ll think of you as a person advancing toward a specific goal who experienced normal setbacks.

Layoffs are never easy. Acknowledging that with honestly and then building on what one has learnt from the experience and what one brings to the table helps. Usually bad mouthing any previous employer/organisation is not encouraged, but rather sharing a positive outlook is a plus. There are circumstances outside our control and it is okay to acknowledge them as such. Every person hiring understands this and will not hold it against anyone.

I am not a fan of saying we should frame a layoff experience in a positive light. Hiring managers/employers are much more likely to respect someone who isn't trying to sugarcoat a difficult career experience. It's perfectly fine to acknowledge that a layoff was difficult or threw you for a loop (you don't have to share everything - but aim to give a snapshot of what was hard and why). The real opportunity you have is to *complete the story*. What did you learn about yourself and how you handled change? How have you applied those learnings to other changes you've experienced? How have you assisted others? If you are a people leader or in HR, how did your own layoff experience impact how you do your job?

When discussing a layoff, accentuate the positive outcomes. Share, "One time at work, I experienced a layoff which, surprisingly, opened new doors for me." You have to learn the reason for the layoff, it doesn't matter if you have made a mistake or the reason is something else. Learning the reason will help you improve yourself and seek better opportunities. Whatever the reason may be you should take that positively and opt for growth and learning. You should be careful about not making the same mistake again if that is the reason.

At the end of your layoff discussion, it's strategic to ask thoughtful questions. Inquire about the stability of the company or the team you'd be joining. This demonstrates your diligence in the job search and shows you are proactively seeking to avoid similar situations in the future. For instance, asking about the company's recent growth or how they support employees during transitions can provide valuable insights into the organization's health and your potential fit. What specific factors do you consider essential when evaluating a company's stability?

Layoffs have become much more common over the past 20 years or so and your interviewer may have had the same experience so don't feel intimidated about explaining the reason for the gap. Own it and be honest. Though badmouthing a previous employer won't get you anywhere, it is okay to admit it was a tough experience, while adding details about what you did while seeking employment (volunteering, part-time work, education/taking classes, networking). During my career, I've started over several times following downsizing. It's not easy. Use the time to reflect on your strengths, what you do well, and how what you have to offer is of value to an organization. Stay strong...you are valued.
