One insight I would like to explore is the impact of a challenging Boss on your direct sub ordinates. I have seen cases where there has been 'pain' transference from the top level to the mid level. Most organizations has structures that are pyramid shaped. If the 'pain' transference is not checked in one of the layers, it will then spread through the whole organisation causing paralysis. I think it's important for every leader to be aware of the consequences a challenging Boss is having on the entire system. In any work environment, the system will eventually gravitate towards its weakest link. What is the lens a leader can use to discern these issues? What are the indicators? Observation is key. Action to check impacts is vital.

Use of a progressive appraisal on a monthly basis help alleviate such scenerios. I remember the former HEA Director for Uganda Hugh Great Head had developed such systems that helped in reducing such pains as mentioned by Enid, but I also think use of the upward feedback from subordinates also helps alot. Use of the staff feedback tool designed by Hugh while intergrating upward feedback mechanisms would help reduce such occurencies.
