How to get in if you forget your NETGEAR router login credentials

To access the NETGEAR WNR1000 router through a web browser, go to the address bar and enter 192.168.1.1—this is the IP address common to most routers. Then enter admin as the default username and password as the default password (the password is case sensitive). All four versions of this router ship with those same login details.

If the Default Password Doesn't Work

If the default password doesn't work, it means someone changed it away from the default password. This is good for security purposes, but it doesn't help if you need to get in.

To return the router to the defaults, reset the router to its factory default settings. This removes the changed password and username, then restores the default credentials as they're described above.

Reset and restart are two separate concepts. Restarting the router doesn't reset the software; it starts a new session using the same login credentials.

Here's how to reset a NETGEAR WNR1000 router:

  1. Plug in the power cable and turn on the router.

  2. Turn the device around so you have access to the back panel.

  3. Use a paperclip or other sharp object to press the Reset button. Hold the Reset button for five to 10 seconds or until the power light blinks.

  4. When the power light stops blinking and becomes a solid color, the reset is complete. This may take at least 30 seconds.

  5. Unplug the power cable for a few seconds. Then, plug it back in to reboot the router.

  6. Wait at least 30 seconds for the WNR1000 to boot up.

  7. When the router is reset, go to http://192.168.1.1 and enter admin for the username and password for the password.

  8. To ensure security, change the default password.

Passwords should be complex and hard to guess. Here are some examples of strong passwords to give you an idea of what you should strive for.

Restore Your Preferred Settings

Reenter the other custom settings if you want your router back in the same state it was in before you reset it. If you had a wireless network configured, for example, enter the SSID and password you want to use. The same is true for other custom settings, such as DNS servers.

To avoid entering this information again if you reset the router in the future, back up the router settings to a file. Find out how to back up and restore the router configuration in Chapter 6 of the WNR1000 manual (it's linked below), in the "Managing the Configuration File" section.

What to Do When You Can't Access the Router

By default, you can access the NETGEAR WNR1000 router at http://192.168.1.1, unless the IP address was changed after it was first set up. You don't have to reset the router just to learn its IP address. Instead, use a computer that's connected to the router to find the default gateway IP address.
