A look at the U.S. teams competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics
Familiar professional athletes and Olympians hoping to continue their winning streaks make up many U.S. teams who are competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Take a look at who makes up the teams representing Team USA.Men's basketball teamTeam USA will go to the Paris Games as the favorite and the top-ranked men's basketball team in the world, thanks to a roster full of NBA superstars. The U.S. still hasn't had to make any changes to the roster since it was originally announced in April, though there are contingency plans in place at every position. The original 12 names remain unchanged: Kawhi Leonard, Tyrese Haliburton, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Anthony Edwards, Jrue Holiday, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Bam Adebayo and Anthony Davis.“We expect everybody to be good to go,” U.S. coach Steve Kerr said in late June. "We’ve been in touch with everyone, not just those three guys. ... We’ve been in communication constantly, so we expect all 12 guys to be ready to roll.”The group has seven players with Olympic gold medals; Durant has three, James has two, while Adebayo, Booker, Holiday, Tatum and Booker each have one. There is a still a chance the roster could change, if necessary. The roster was in flux before the Tokyo Games three years ago until just before the start of the competition.Women's basketball teamExperience was USA Basketball's major reason for excluding No. 1 WNBA draft pick Caitlin Clark from the roster, which includes seven players from the group that won gold in Tokyo — the seventh straight for the Americans.Diana Taurasi is returning to the Olympics for a record sixth time. Her Olympic career started when she was a WNBA rookie in the 2004 Athens Game, and now the 42-year-old will be on the team again. Other returners from the Tokyo Olympics are Breanna Stewart, A'ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd and Brittney Griner.Besides the returners, the Americans also added newcomers Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young, who helped the U.S. win the inaugural 3x3 gold medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Several first-time Olympians will join the team with Alyssa Thomas, Sabrina Ionescu and Kahleah Copper. All three played on the American team that won the World Cup in Australia in 2022.Women's gymnasticsSimone Biles headlines a U.S. women's gymnastics team filled with familiar faces eyeing a shot at redemption in Paris.Biles will be joined by reigning Olympic champion Sunisa Lee, 2020 floor exercise champion gold medalist Jade Carey, 2020 Olympic silver medalist Jordan Chiles and 16-year-old newcomer Hezly Rivera, who will find herself competing next to a couple of her idols as the Americans try to reclaim the spot atop the Olympic podium they ceded to Russia in Japan. It's the oldest women's gymnastics team the U.S. has ever taken to the Games. For decades, the U.S. women's Olympic program was powered by teenagers who would head to the Games, win a few medals then cede the spotlight to the next wave of talent. Those days are long gone.Biles' unique longevity — she will arrive in Paris as the oldest female U.S. team member since the 1950s — stands apart, but she's hardly the only 20-something who will be on the floor at Bercy Arena later this month. The easing of name, image and likeness rules around college athletes in recent years allowed Lee (21), Chiles (23) and Carey (24) to continue training and competing at the NCAA level while still being able to cash in on their Olympic success. It's a luxury that wasn't afforded the champions that came before them, from Carly Patterson to Nastia Liukin to Gabby Douglas, who had to choose between accepting endorsements or retaining their amateur status. Men's gymnastics Fred Richard will headline the five-man U.S. team with a legitimate chance to medal after winning the Olympic trials this year. Richard, known as “ Frederick Flips ” to his hundreds of thousands of social media followers, has spent years trying to nudge men's gymnastics toward the spotlight through creative viral videos that often include collaborations with athletes in other sports. The lights don’t get any brighter than the ones Richard and Olympic teammates Malone, Asher Hong, Paul Juda and Stephen Nedoroscik will compete under in Paris. The Americans have spent the last three years overhauling their program after finishing well off the podium at the Tokyo Olympics. They revamped their scoring system, offering bonus points at domestic meets for athletes who attempted more challenging skills. Juda and Hong, members of last year's world championship team, will join Malone and Richard as the core of what will be a relatively young American team. Nedoroscik is 25. Malone is 24. Juda turns 23 on July 7. Richard and Hong are all of 20. Khoi Young and Shane Wiskus will serve as the alternates. Wiskus, a member of the 2020 Olympic team, is retiring at the end of the competition season. Women's soccer teamThe team traveling to Paris is the youngest for the U.S. since 2008, signals a shift in the team as it looks toward the 2027 Women's World Cup under U.S. national team coach Emma Hayes. Alex Morgan, a three-time Olympian and two-time Women's World Cup winner, was the most notable absence on the 18-player roster.Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was included on the squad despite a recent thigh injury that kept her out of the team's last two matches. Naeher recently returned to play for her NWSL team, the Chicago Red Stars.Versatile veteran Crystal Dunn, who in recent years has played on the back line, is on the roster as a forward, along with Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson and 19-year-old Jaedyn Shaw. Hayes also selected goalkeeper Casey Murphy, while Jane Campbell was included among the team's four alternates, with midfielders Hal Harshfelt and Croix Bethune, and forward Lynn Williams. Hayes, who had been coaching English club Chelsea, was named the coach of the United States in November but finished the Women's Super League season. After her arrival in May, she coached the national team's matches against South Korea.Former coach Vlatko Andonovski resigned from the U.S. team following last year’s disappointing finish at the Women’s World Cup. Twila Kilgore led the team in the interim while awaiting Hayes' return, and now serves as an assistant coach.Ten players who were on the World Cup roster were included on the Olympic team. The United States has won four Olympic gold medals, more than any other team, but has not won gold since the 2012 London Games.
