The reticulated giraffe died Friday, July 5th.

Skye, the reticulated giraffe was euthanized on Friday, July 5th, said the Sacramento Zoo.She had been receiving care and treatment for age-related issues and, as her condition declined, veterinary staff made the decision to humanely euthanize her. Skye was born on July 14, 1998, and reached the impressive age of 26 years. She was born at the Milwaukee Zoo in 1998 and has been a cherished Sacramento Zoo resident since 1999. The age-related treatment included; joint supplements, pain medications, cold laser therapy, hot and cold packs, and pulsed electromagnetic field mat therapy (PEMF) which helps reduce pain and inflammation in bones, muscles, and joints."Over the last few years, Skye had developed some age-related joint problems that required medical treatment, medications, and diligent monitoring of her mobility and comfort. As difficult as this time is for us all, I am very proud of Skye's caretakers for their dedication in providing her with an enjoyable and comfortable life in her twilight years." says Dr. Jenessa Gjeltema, Head Veterinarian. "I got to experience first hand her incredible intelligence and spunk during my time as her caretaker. Skye touched countless lives and has given so many people a greater appreciation for her species and the role we can play in saving giraffes from extinction. Skye was unique, brave, funny, sassy and clever. She was always one step ahead of me and I appreciate everything she has taught me and our whole team.” Melissa McCartney, Senior Manager of Animal Care shares.Reticulated giraffes are listed as "Vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, with their total population declining over 50% in the last three decades.
