Breakdancing, or 'breaking', is set to be one of the most anticipated new sports at the upcoming Paris Olympics, with world champion Jeffrey Louis among the favorites to earn a medal.

Breakdancing, also known as "breaking," is set to make its debut as one of the most anticipated new sports at the Paris Olympics. Surfing, skateboarding, and sport climbing were introduced as medal sports at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This is the first time 'breaking' will take the global stage. "It started off in the Bronx from nothing, literally nothing. Other sports, you have gadgets, you have helmets, you have boards, but breaking came from the ghettos of nothing," said breakdancer Jeffrey Louis. Louis, an American, is a world champion performer and one of the favorites to earn a medal. He says he believes that breaking is for everyone. "It's this immersive moment where you're a participant, you're not a spectator. So, everybody's filling in, you got the dancers, you got the emcee, you got the DJ. So, you have all the elements to make a party, and now you just add a little competitive environment to it, and you've got yourself a battle, but I think that's one thing people should take away from it is it's a party," Louis said.Team USA will be outfitted by Nike with performance sneakers designed just for breakdancing. The "Nike Jam" is a state-of-the-art shoe built with the needs of world-class breakdancers in mind. The women's breakdancing competition is on Aug. 9, and the men's competition is on Aug. 10.
