California Gov. Newsom to meet with President Biden, other governors in DC
Gov. Gavin Newsom is leaving the state for more political travel, his campaign confirmed on Tuesday. Newsom is set to head to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to meet with President Joe Biden and other Democratic governors at the White House. Newsom is expected to make an appearance there to "stand with the president," his campaign spokesman said. The meeting will take place shortly after some governors hold a call on Monday to discuss the Democratic party's potential path forward following party concerns about Biden's debate performance. Newsom has been serving as a surrogate for Biden. He attended last week's debate to promote and defend the President in the spin room full of reporters from across the country. Newsom's trip is expected to last six days, with other Biden campaign stops scheduled in Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. The governor's upcoming trip comes as California grapples with a triple-digit heatwave straining the state's electricity grid and fueling some wildfires in Northern California. He'll also skip town as California lawmakers plan to make three key votes that are set to finalize the November ballot, including two bond measures for climate and school funding. KCRA 3 reached out to legislative leaders Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and Senate Pro Tem Mike McGuire for comment on Newsom's upcoming travel and was waiting to hear back as of Tuesday night.
