July is set to be a significant month for many, with the expansion of a welfare scheme and the opening of applications for another payment. However, it's not all good news, as a price increase is expected to affect thousands.

Here's what you need to know as we enter July 2024:

Free Travel Scheme

Starting from July 2024, the Free Travel Scheme will be extended to include those who are medically certified as unfit to drive. This scheme allows beneficiaries to travel free of charge on public transport and some private bus and ferry services.

Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) is also available to help families manage the cost of school uniforms and shoes. Many families receive the BSCFA automatically, but if you don't, you can apply online at MyWelfare.

Applications opened on 12 June 2024 and will close on 30 September 2024. The current rates are €160 for children aged 4 to 11 and €285 for those aged 12 to 22.

However, children aged between 18-22 must be returning to full-time second-level education in a recognised school in the autumn of 2024, reports RSVP Live.

SSE Airtricity

In other news, SSE Airtricity has announced a price decrease, effective from July 1. This will result in a 10% reduction in standard electricity and gas rates. Eligible gas customers can expect to see annual savings of around €104.79, while those with electricity included will save up to €149.24 annually.

Irish Life Health

Irish Life Health is set to increase its prices, resulting in an average hike of 5.3% on its gross adult premium.

The company explained that the rise across its various plans will range from between 1.6% and 7.9%. Existing customers due for renewal, as well as new customers, will experience the increase from 1 July.

AIB rates

AIB is set to reduce its four-year fixed mortgage rate for customers borrowing €250,000 or more by 0.25% from 3 July. The bank clarified that this rate can also be accessed by existing mortgage customers with a balance of at least €250,000.
