Who should attend

This ISTR-accredited course is intended for Departmental Safety Officers, Laboratory Managers and Technical staff with a significant role working within Containment Level 3 and 2 facilities at Imperial. A structured and comprehensive training course which meets a range of competency requirements and is supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Essential Information:

All participants are required to attend all advertised course dates, sit the written assessments, and participate in the practical exercises. Places are limited and will be offered based on Imperial needs.
Bookings should be made by Faculty, Departmental Safety Officers, and Section Safety coordinators.

Key areas covered in this course

Biosafety Practitioner Level 1 is based on course attendance and assessed achievement. The course comprises 10 modules covering the following areas:

  • Roles and responsibilities, legislation
  • disinfection/sterilisation
  • waste disposal, transport of hazardous materials, hazards and risks
  • Genetic Modification
  • equipment, plant/equipment and their servicing
  • facilities/design, laboratory management
  • bio-security
  • policy/manual development
  • auditing/inspection
  • influencing skills
  • incident and emergency procedures
  • occupational health, health surveillance, immunisations
  • learning & development.

Registration as a Biosafety Practitioner

ISTR has accredited course providers. Once attendees have completed all units provided in this 5-day course (and passed the assessment), they can become registered by ISTR as Level 1 Practitioners if they have two years of relevant experience.
