The romantic comedy The Holiday tugged at everyone’s heartstrings when it was released in 2006. Aside from its stunning cinematography and locations, the film also had a stellar cast, including Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black.
From peering deeply into Jude Law’s deep blue eyes to longing for a buddy like Arthur, the movie offered something for everyone. So, it’s only fair that the cast had a blast filming the movie, which Kate Winslet never shied away from admitting.

There is no genre more comforting than romantic comedy. Whether you are happily in love, overcoming brutal heartbreak, or just looking for someone to fall in love with, romantic comedies can be as healing as they are inspiring.
Unfortunately, there's still a lot of critical bias against the genre, so the Rotten Tomatoes score can be deceiving when it comes to figuring out which movie is worth seeing and which isn't. Here are 10 romantic comedies handpicked by fans of the genre that you can easily find on Netflix.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Crazy Rich Asians is one of those movies that audiences and critics agree on. Beautifully shot and brilliantly written, the story of Rachel Chu, who discovers that her longtime boyfriend is one of Singapore's most eligible bachelors with the most disapproving mother, stands at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and is worth every minute spent watching.

Something About Her — the West Hollywood sandwich shop started by “Vanderpump Rules” stars Ariana Madix and Katie Maloney — is officially open for business, after a long period in red-tape limbo. On Wednesday, more than 100 people lined up outside the bright awning before it had opened, waiting several hours to buy the highly anticipated sandwiches from this long-awaited restaurant.
A few days after the soft opening for friends and family, it was finally time to open the doors to the public. Variety popped in to check it out on the first day it was open.
“It was very, very exciting when we were opening the blinds,” Madix told Variety. “The line has been crazy. We’re just really grateful that all these people are not only willing to come and support, they’re also willing to wait. We are a small place, so, that’s been really awesome.”
And wait they did.

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published April 2021. It has been updated to coincide with the series finale of “The Regime.”]
Kate Winslet is an actress whose performances aren’t defined so much by their rigid technicality, but by their manner of presence. Much like the work of a classical Hollywood movie star, Kate Winslet’s power lies more in the brusque delivery of a cutting line or a piercing glance. There’s a looseness writhing to get out beneath the false composure of her characters, who are almost always marked by their prickly defiance and wit.
Whether bound inside a corset, or to the social and gender mores of a period setting (into which she’s often typecast), there’s a feral charm to her approach. In a movie like “Titanic,” Winslet’s Rose Dewitt Bukater doesn’t quite fit into the stifling world of the early-20th-century upper class; that idea is taken to more contemporary extremes in a movie like “Revolutionary Road” as April Wheeler, a...

Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It traces the admirable behind-the-scenes teamwork of McAlister, journalist and interviewer Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), producer Stewart Maclean (Richard Goulding) and ultimate fact-checker Freddy (Jordan Kouamé), as well as photographer Jae Donnolly (Connor Swindells).
High stakes, adrenaline and twists and turns make “Scoop” a compelling watch, in addition to the star-stacked cast that portrays all the real-life players.

Actor Hugh Grant recently teamed up with Oscar-winner Kate Winslet for HBO’s limited series The Regime. At times, Winslet’s performance could be the scariest part of the show.

Grant had a few reasons to be nervous when working alongside Winslet on The Regime, as the actor portrayed a very intimidating character. The limited series saw her playing powerful dictator Chancellor Elena Vernham whose mental health led to the fracture of her country.
It was a much different character than Winslet played when she first worked with Grant. The two originally teamed up for the 1995 flick Sense and Sensibility. It would also see her team up with stars like Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson. Winslet looked forward to reuniting with Grant after three decades apart.

Robert Downey Jr. went from being a young actor struggling with drug-related issues to one of the highest-grossing actors and is currently an Oscar nominee. The Iron Man actor had earlier revealed that his audition was so bad and Kate Winslet, the lead actress, hated his English accent. Winslet has now confirmed this story in a recent interview.

Robert Downey Jr. revealed last summer that his audition for Nancy Meyers’ “The Holiday” went poorly after Kate Winslet roasted his accent work. Now Winslet herself is admitting to hating Downey Jr.’s interpretation of the character ultimately played by Jude Law. Winslet recently appeared on “The Tonight Show” while promoting her new HBO series “The Regime” and was asked by host Jimmy Fallon if she remembered Downey Jr.’s audition. Fallon was in the room for it as he was reading for the role played by Jack Black, while Winslet and Cameron Diaz had already been cast and were reading their roles.
“I remember it extremely well. I really do,” Winslet said. “We were told it was just a reading. I thought it was just a reading, like a fun reading of the script. I didn’t know it was an audition for the part. I am so sorry you didn’t get it.

“I feel like if you look into my eyes, you just see a shadow of a robot,” he added.
A few years ago, Nancy Meyers – who directed The Holiday – addressed the possibility of making a sequel.

It would seem that nudity in film is something that has existed from the very start of Hollywood. Although considered taboo to this date by a big chunk of its audience, there has always been a form of poetic expression to it. Most female celebrities are pressured into it and a majority of them have some or the other negative experience with it. Unfortunately, Kate Winslet is one such actress.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in a still from Titanic
Before the SAG-AFTRA strikes, intimacy coordinators were rarely heard off. A huge majority of projects that had nudity, did not have them at all. After the actors’ strikes, however, things have changed drastically. Winslet spoke on exactly this, stating that looking back, there are times when she wished that she had had one such person by her side when she was doing nude scenes.

Kate Winslet revealed that fans often recognize her more in public from her role in The Holiday rather than Titanic.
The actress stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, where she talked about some of her biggest projects throughout her career with the host.
“People come up to me in the streets more about The Holiday and the episode of Extras that I did than Titanic,” she shared on the show.
“Especially at Christmas, and what’s so lovely is that mothers and daughters come up to me in the grocery store and they say, ‘Ok, we just love The Holiday. It’s our little ritual at Christmas.’ And they have things that they eat every year. They sit down, it’s a tradition, and I just love that,” Winslet added. “That’s something I never would have expected, this sort of mother-daughter connection around a film like that.

Star-crossed lovers, hopeless romantics, or just unlucky in love. Valentine’s Day films are not just about head-over-heels happy endings. That would be a bit on the boring side. The films that have captivated the romantic genre are the ones about heartache, bad timing, yearning and the strong forces that keep true lovers apart.
William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Rick and Ilsa, portrayed by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, from Casablanca, and Chow Mo-wan & Su Li-zhen from In the Mood For Love all have to overcome their hearts’ desire as forces they can’t control keep them apart as time and fate lead to their ultimate betrayal.

Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon: Part One — Child of Fire” replaced “Leave the World Behind” as No. 1 this week on Netflix’s Top 10 Movie list. But the big news here is that Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” considered a prime awards contender and given a nationwide, four-week theatrical release, dropped off the list after only four days.
Among new releases on PVOD, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (Lionsgate) placed No. 1 at Vudu and Google Play, second at iTunes (where the reduced-price “Oppenheimer” returned to No. 1). “Trolls Band Together” (Universal) placed No. 2 at Vudu, but lower elsewhere.
It may be unfair to judge the response equivalent to broader interest genre titles like the sci-fi “Rebel Moon.” We don’t expect highly acclaimed specialized titles to compete on equal footing in theatrical box office lists.

The concept of the holiday movie began back in 1898 with G.A. Smith’s pioneering silent film Santa Claus. The first of its kind to show the depiction of Santa that only runs just shy over a minute.
Since then Hollywood has belted out an array of films that have either been true to the genre such as A Christmas Story; The Holiday; Miracle On 34th Street; Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey or films like Die Hard; Brazil, and Gremlins that have teetered on the edge of identifying as a holiday film.
Then there are the anti-holiday movies and the Christmas horrors. Subgenres of their own like the slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and Christmas Evil, a John Waters favorite, so you are inclined to know what demented viewing you are in for.

1994’s Miracle on 34th Street is filled with magical moments. But some were more enjoyable to film than others for actor Mara Wilson. The former child star, who played young Susan Walker, counted scenes with certain cast members as her favorite. Spoiler: Not Sir Richard Attenborough’s Kriss Kringle. Plus, some behind-the-scenes details about the film.
Wilson loved filming any ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ scenes with Elizabeth Perkins and Dylan McDermott
Wilson, who no longer acts, counted her favorite scenes to film in the ‘90s remake of the classic Christmas movie as the ones with two of her cast members. Not Attenborough, or even the reindeer in the courtroom, made the cut. Rather, her movie mom and dad.
“On set, anything that I got to do with Dylan McDermott and Elizabeth Perkins [was my favorite]; they were just lovely,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “In particular, the dinner table scene during Thanksgiving was really fun.

Social media users recently marveled that last month marked 20 years since three modern Christmas favorites — New Line’s Elf, Universal’s Love Actually and Miramax’s Bad Santa — all hit theaters within weeks of each other. Two decades later, you don’t need to feel like a cotton-headed ninny-muggins if you’re among those wondering why studios don’t release holiday theatrical offerings in the way they once did.
Although most Christmas films don’t tend to follow the path of, say, 1990’s Home Alone, which topped the domestic box office for a whopping 12 straight weeks, they had typically been a staple of the release calendar, with a handful of titles hitting theaters annually, as recently as the late 2010s. That list includes such 2016 theatrical offerings as Almost Christmas, Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party and Why Him?, followed by 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2, A Bad Moms Christmas and animated...

Actress Cameron Diaz has given her fans her top bit of advice for a happy relationship. The ‘Me, Myself and Irene’ star, 51, tied the knot with Benji Madden in 2015 and has continued to gush about her man and their relationship.
The Hollywood star has provided a bit of advice she thinks is key – sleep in separate bedrooms, reports Mirror.co.uk.
Despite the ‘Shrek’ actress recognising it’s a controversial idea, she is adamant it’s a genius idea and is urging people to “normalise” the way of thinking.
“We should normalise separate bedrooms,” Cameron told the Lipstick on the Rim podcast. “To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I’m fine. And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations.

Christmas movies don’t often earn Academy Award nominations. “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” are two of the few holiday pictures that did make their way into the Oscars lineups. That leaves a sackful of Christmas films that should have also Oscar nominations. Here are five of them.
“Love Actually”
Writer-director Richard Curtis was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” in 1995 but has never landed a follow-up bid. He could have earned that for his script for “Love Actually,” which interweaves 10 stories about love during London in the lead-up to Christmas. Bill Nighy won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor as a rockstar searching for a comeback. His quirky, hilarious performance could have seen him wind up at the Oscars, too. Instead, he had to wait until earlier this year for his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor for “Living”).

With Christmas just one week (and one day) away, we wanted to ask you, the people, what your favorite Christmas Movie is? It doesn’t have to be the movie you think is the best, just the one that you eagerly anticipate watching every year. Is it the timeless tale of an angel getting its wings in It’s A Wonderful Life? or perhaps the under-appreciated (and genuinely hilarious) R rated The Night Before is how you kick off your holiday season?
Do you look forward to seeing Jack Skellington discover the true meaning of Christmas in the Christmas Movie Classic The Nightmare Before Christmas or watching Kevin McCallister take down the Wet/ Sticky Bandits in Home Alone 1&2 or perhaps seeing Clark W. Griswold struggle to have the perfect family Christmas in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is more your speed? Whatever film fills you with yuletide glee, we would love...

The best way to enjoy the holiday season? Take some guilty pleasure in these fun rom-coms! Some of these will warm you up inside out. ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Romantic comedies with a holiday or Christmas theme have always been enjoyable. There’s a certain flair to them. They’ve always been a trend and are almost on par with classic holiday films like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Meet Me in St. Louis.” Even better now — with streamers like Hallmark and Netflix, we have mass production of rom-coms and almost each one ends up being more enjoyable than the other — think “Love is in the Air” or perhaps Emma Robert’s “Holidate.” So, if you’ve run out of rom-coms to enjoy this holiday season, we’ve got you covered.

Is he really Santa? That’s the question actor Mara Wilson fielded about her co-star, Sir Richard Attenborough, over and over while filming the ‘90s remake of the classic Christmas movie Miracle on 34th Street. Wilson’s response, which she later revealed, was to give the “polite” answer.
Sir Richard Attenborough ‘really’ felt ‘like Santa Claus’ to Mara Wilson
Although her character, Susan Walker, didn’t believe in Santa Claus, Wilson herself got Santa vibes from Attenborough. The former child star told Entertainment Weekly that as a child on set, the late actor, who died in 2014 at the age of 90, felt like Santa to her.
Recalling how “lovely” and “fun” Attenborough was to work with, Wilson shared that “he really did feel like Santa Claus” to her.
“He was so kind,” she added. “He made it a really fun movie to work on — even though it was kind of ridiculous...

The Holiday may have premiered in 2006, but nearly 20 years later it remains something of a modern classic in the Christmas movie genre. For those who watch the Nancy Meyers film every holiday season — this writer included — actor Cameron Diaz’s outfits are, in addition to the sets, just as covetable today as they were when The Holiday first hit screens. And, as it turns out, putting the looks together proved to be a memorable experience for Diaz.
Cameron selected her outfits for ‘The Holiday’ alongside Nancy in a room filled with cashmere
Diaz reflected on The Holiday in a 2020 interview, telling Vulture she and Meyers got to know each other the same day they picked her character Amanda Woods’ wardrobe. In the film, Amanda is a movie trailer maker from Los Angeles, California, who trades places with Kate Winslet’s Iris Simpkins to spend the holidays in England.

Nancy Meyers has written a love letter to Cary Grant by recommending his screwball comedies and classics like North by Northwest and The Philadelphia Story as part of the December 2023 Turner Classic Movies lineup in her own TCM Picks video.
“He’s a brilliant prototype for a leading man in a romantic comedy certainly. And I would be lying if I said I didn’t think of him sometimes as I’m writing. You can picture him doing it and it makes you better,” Meyers, whose rom-com canon includes box office performers like Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and What Women Want, tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Her TCM movie picks follow Meyers insisting she has viewed most Cary Grant movies dozens of times, not least to study the iconic star’s slapstick humor and verbal sparring with leading ladies to see beneath his debonair looks and onscreen charisma, to the...

EXmas is a delightful holiday rom-com featuring some classic but relatable tropes. While we may not find our ex at our holiday table, most of us have longed for a holiday like the Stroops share.
It features charismatic stars, including Robbie Amell as Grham and Leighton Meester as Ali. Michael Hitchcock and Kathryn Greenwood were hilarious and Graham’s holiday-obsessed parents.
Jonah Feingold loves directing com-coms, and he’s had great success with his two prior films, Dating in New York and At Midnight. We were excited to speak with him about how he directed Amazon Freevee’s EXmas.
Feingold spoke with us during a recent virtual press day about which holiday films inspired him, how he selected the cast, and how essential the family dynamics were to this film.
Check it out below.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Actor Kate Winslet took a break from starring in dramas to do the Nancy Meyers picture The Holiday. But although the feature was a lighthearted romantic comedy, Winslet asserted it was the hardest role she’d ever done.
Kate Winslet never played a modern English character before ‘The Holiday’ Kate Winslet | Alan Chapman/Dave Benett/Getty Images
Winslet was aware of how different The Holiday was from her usual pictures. For one, the feature was a romcom, which Winslet seldom starred in. It also focused on a contemporary English woman, which Winslet also never really played before. Whenever the actor did play contemporary characters, like in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, they were usually American. But her Holiday character, Iris, was so similar to her that Winslet was uncomfortable in the role.

But her Holiday character, Iris, was so similar to her that Winslet was uncomfortable in the role.

Two decades ago, one jilted heart found its way to Italy as part of the iconic, genre-redefining film “Under the Tuscan Sun.” Starring Diane Lane as Frances, a San Francisco writer who jets to Europe after realizing her soon-to-be ex-husband is cheating on her, the 2003 film cemented the early aughts’ obsession with starting over again. “Under the Tuscan Sun” was based on a real-life Frances, author Frances Mayes to be exact, whose memoir was adapted by late writer-director Audrey Wells for the big screen.
Frances, newly jilted and with the emotional support of her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh), escapes both midlife crises and bad American men by traveling across the globe for a luxury vacation. She falls in love with a Tuscan villa and opts to renovate it while bonding with locals, including the seductive Marcello (Raoul Bova).

It’s a case of one score to rule them all, as Howard Shore’s stirring epic soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings trilogy was voted the U.K.’s favorite movie music.
Shore’s score for the Rings film, which has won three Academy Awards, three Golden Globes and four Grammys, came out ahead of some of the greatest and most recognizable soundtracks of all time, including John Williams’ music for Schindler’s List and Star Wars, which came second and third respectively.
The list of the top 100 film scores was compiled by popular U.K. radio station Classic FM, as part of their annual Movie Music Hall of Fame. More than 10,000 people voted for this year’s edition and the winner was revealed on Sunday by Jonathan Ross, the former presenter of the BBC’s Film program.

The premise of Nancy Meyers' 2006 romance "The Holiday" is rather high concept. Iris (Kate Winslet), a reporter in England, has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend. Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a Los Angeles native and showbiz impresario, has just done the same. By chance, the two heartbroken women discover a want-ad in the newspaper wherein they would swap homes for the holidays and live in each other's respective towns. Amanda, while in England, finds some unexpected romantic company with Iris' visiting brother Graham (Jude Law). The two decide to have a fling, but end up seeing each other more and more. Iris, meanwhile, settling in L.A., finds herself drifting closer and closer toward a friend of her ex, a charming and funny dude named Miles (Jack Black). The film also features Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Kathryn Hahn, and John Krasinski. Lindsay Lohan makes a cameo.

Hollywood stars Robert Downey Jr and Jimmy Fallon went down memory lane and remembered the time they auditioned for Nancy Meyers’ ‘The Holiday’.
Things didn’t go well for Downey Jr. and Fallon as they recalled on The Howard Stern Show how bad they fumbled their audition for the romantic comedy, reports Deadline.
“We both got called in just as seat-fillers and we saw each other,” Downey Jr said.
“Jack Black is getting his part and Jude Law is definitely getting my part, but (Meyers) needed someone to read with the gals, and we’re sitting there going, ‘It’s about to happen for us.'”
Fallon added: “I was in a hotel room with Robert Downey Jr., Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, and we read this script… I said, ‘If Jack Black says no to this movie, I’m so in. I’ll do it for half his price.
