It’s the day after the Emmy nominations, and a few things are clear in the light of Thursday – namely, lots of deja-vu and lots of concentrating the wealth in precious few places. As is often the case with the TV academy, when they like you they really like you, and when they don’t like you, they completely ignore you. It’s good for your show to be on Netflix, FX, HBO, Apple and Hulu, less good on Paramount+ and Showtime. So much original content, so little time.
Basically, it seemed like the new blood that was welcomed into the Emmy tent on Tuesday was the direct result of replacing the old blood. “Ted Lasso,” “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” disappeared, and “Reservation Dogs” and “What We Do in the Shadows” suddenly appeared in a meaningful way on the comedy series radar. Curb Your Enthusiasm is going out with a celebration as the HBO comedy earned four Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series and another for star Larry David in the category Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Following the nomination announcements, TV Insider caught up with executive producer, writer, and director Jeff Schaffer, who is opening up about being nominated for the show’s final season, why poking fun at the Seinfeld finale in the show’s last episode worked, and paying homage to star Richard Lewis, who died when the final season was still airing. See what Schaffer had to share, below, and stay tuned to see how Curb fares at the Emmys when they air this September. HBO Are these nominations extra special considering it’s the end? Or is it? Technically the show ended years ago and made a comeback… Jeff Schaffer: First of all,...

The company has been talking with consultants about the best ways to increase shareholder value.
Are big changes on the way for Warner Bros. Discovery? It’s entirely possible; according to new details from the Financial Times, Wbd has begun investigating the possibility of asset sales, as well as the idea of spinning off its streaming platform Max with its movie studio to form a new company while its TV channels stay put, siloing the more reliable parts of the business from its debt-ridden counterparts. Multiple options are on the table, as the company looks into the best ways to increase its value for shareholders.

The nominations for the 76th annual Emmys have dropped. There were some records broken, a lot of surprises including 36 first-time nominees and some major snubs. And a lot of fun facts and trivia about this year’s nominees. FX’s period drama series “Shogun” earning 25 Emmy nominations this year, the most of any dramatic series this year. The original NBC miniseries adaptation of the James Clavell best-seller which starred Richard Chamberlain and the legendary Toshiro Mifune received 14 nominations and won for limited series, costume design, graphic design and title sequences. Hulu’s “The Bear” broke the record for most nominations for a comedy series earning 23 nominations. NBC’s “30 Rock” had held the record with 22 nominations since 2009. Native Americans finally have some representation in this year’s nomination with Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis earning outstanding supporting actress nominations for Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.

Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? That'd be feudal Japanese epic Shōgun which, after a dramatic pivot from Limited Series to Drama after news of the series' surprise renewal, has bagged 25 nominations, including nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai as well as shouts for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Direction, and much more besides.

The television industry will honor its finest in the 76th annual Emmy Awards, and in a highly anticipated annual event, the 2024 Emmy nominations have been officially announced.
The nominees were revealed by esteemed actors Sheryl Lee Ralph of Abbott Elementary and Tony Hale of Arrested Development.
One of the standout narratives of this year’s nominations is the resounding success of FX’s culinary drama, The Bear. The series, which had already made a strong impression at the 2023 Emmys, has now secured a record-breaking 23 nominations – the most-nominated comedy series in the history of the prestigious awards.
In the drama category, the highly anticipated Shōgun series earned an impressive 25 nominations, which included recognition for its talented ensemble cast, such as Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira and Néstor Carbonell.

Congratulations, I guess, to The Bear, which just set a record for most Emmy nominations by a comedy series with a gut-busting 23 nods. Only one problem, as has been pointed out by every entertainment outlet on the Internet — anxiety-inducing, scream-filled, angst-ridden The Bear isn’t a comedy! Recognize its excellence elsewhere and give some deserved kudos to actual comedies that deserved a shot, like…
Girls5eva. A worthy successor to fizzy sitcoms like 30 Rock and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the never-nominated Girls5eva deserves some credit for actually making us laugh. Variety applauded its revival, both for its “joke-dense satire of cultural misogyny” and its “resonant tale of later-in-life reinvention.”
Gen V. The Boys spin-off is currently rocking a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, “a sharp, snarky commentary on the billion-dollar business of hero worship,” says the L.A. Times’ Lorraine Ali. “And yes, it’s just as irreverent and crass as its fearless predecessor.

I often start analysis of the Emmy nominations by stating how predictable the nominations are, generally with the same shows dominating year after year after year. Well, the overall list of nominees announced this morning was predictable, but it was because pundits largely were forecasting success for shows that aren’t always the same old-same old.
Chief among them was the startling fact that of the eight nominees for marquee Best Drama Series category, only one of them, The Crown, was in the running last year; that is something that hasn’t happened in half a century when The Waltons, which had won the previous year, was the only returning nominee in 1974. But keep in mind there were fewer nominees in those days (six), so this is pretty remarkable. This change is possible because last year’s winner Succession and perennial nominee Better Call Saul — which went 0-for-53 in Emmy...

The nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards that were revealed on Wednesday morning confirm that there is tremendous support from the TV Academy’s 22,000 members for the three shows that have long been presumed to be the frontrunners in their respective categories: FX’s drama series Shogun (which landed a field-leading 25 noms), FX’s comedy series The Bear (the runner-up with 23 noms, a new record for a comedy, or at least a show that could get away with being classified as one) and Netflix’s limited series Baby Reindeer (11 noms).
But — and this is a big but — the noms also suggest that pundits, including me, may have been overestimating the strength of that trio of shows and underestimating the strength of some of their competitors.
Among dramas, Netflix’s The Crown, for its sixth, final and worst-reviewed season (it’s at just 55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), was the runner-up with a formidable 18 noms,...

It was a tough week for Wbd, which is struggling to move streaming to the forefront of its entertainment offerings.
Does David Zaslav have Warner Bros. Discovery on the right track? According to one Wall Street analyst, the answer is “No.” Deadline reports that Bank of America Global Research’s Jessica Reif Erlich is advocating for big changes at Wbd to help boost the company’s value to shareholders as its stock price has seen a precipitous drop in the two years since Discovery and WarnerMedia merged. Amongst other things, those suggested changes include massive overhauls for Wbd’s streaming service Max, but as the company announces yet another wave of layoffs, the timing of Erlich’s comments seems all the more poignant.
Key Details: Erlich recommends spinning off Max and Wbd’s movie studio into a standalone company. Doing so would allow the company’s linear channels to carry its debt load,...

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

Reservation Dogs is finally getting some Emmy love in its final season.
The FX/Hulu comedy, co-created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, has long been a critical favorite, picking up recognition at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Spirit Awards and Writers Guild Awards. Emmy nominations, though, have remained elusive — until Wednesday morning.
The show was recognized in the best comedy series category for the 2024 Emmys, competing alongside Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, The Bear and What We Do in the Shadows.
D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai was also nominated for lead actor in a comedy series, along with nominations for picture editing for a single-camera comedy series and cinematography for a single-camera series (half-hour) for a total of four nods. Reservation Dogs has only received one Emmy nod before this year, when nominated for sound editing in 2023.

The Bear has set a new record ahead of the 2024 Emmys.
The FX series starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach set a new record for nominations in a single year in the comedy category with 23 noms. The record was previously held by 30 Rock with 22 nominations in 2009.
White was nominated for best lead actor in a comedy series for his role as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto. White previously won his first Emmy in the same category for The Bear at the 2023 Emmys. He has also won two Golden Globes and a SAG Award for his performance in the series. Meanwhile, Edebiri was nominated for best lead actress in a comedy series for her portrayal of Sydney Adamu. Like White, she had her first Emmy win and nomination for her role in The Bear during last year’s ceremony.

The upcoming nominations for the best in television have been announced. The list of this year’s nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmys has been announced today by actors Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale in Hollywood. This year’s event has a rare distinction of taking place less than a year after the last event, which had been postponed to January of this year due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes that lasted for a bigger part of the summer and fall in 2023. Last year’s Emmys included winners from such shows as The Bear, Abbott Elementary and HBO’s massively popular series Succession. The ceremony is set to take place on September 15, exactly eight months after the 75th Primetime Emmys were presented on Fox. The Hollywood Reporter has listed the nominations for this year, so here are the 2024 Emmy nominees:

It’s serious — “The Bear” just broke the Emmy record for a comedy series.
The second season of the hit FX series, which aired in June 2023, led the tally for comedy series with 23 nominations, including outstanding comedy series. It now surpasses the 22-nomination Emmy record held by NBC’s “30 Rock” since 2009. The all-time series record of 32 nominations, held by HBO’s “Game of Thrones” since 2016, remains firmly in place.
In addition, the show picked up major nominations for lead comedy actor (Jeremy Allen White), lead comedy actress (Ayo Edebiri), supporting comedy actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Lionel Boyce), supporting comedy actress (Liza Colón-Zayas), directing (Storer for “Fishes” and Ramy Youssef for “Honeydew” Tk) and writing (“Fishes” by Joanna Calo and Storer).

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.

Poor Chuck Cunningham.
On Happy Days, producers thought enough of Richie’s older brother to cast two different actors (Gavan O’Herlihy and Randolph Roberts) to play the basketball-dribbling college student. Chuck showed up 11 times during the show’s first two seasons, only to mysteriously disappear without explanation.
Chuck Cunningham Syndrome, as described on TV Tropes, is when television characters aren’t killed off or written off — they simply vanish as if they never existed. Here are seven more sitcom characters who suffered a similar Chuck Cunningham-like fate…
1 Judy, ‘Family Matters’
Suffering a fate worse than Chuck, Judy, the third and youngest child in the Winslow clan, was around for a full three seasons. Come Season Four? Poof! No more Judy. You couldn’t even say she was off at an extended summer camp because, from that point forward, Carl and Harriette were pretty explicit about having only two children. You’re out of the will,...

This year isn’t likely to be remembered for its television. Sure, TV will play its part in setting the historical record, but in an election year that’s also an Olympics year that’s also the second year in which Ben Affleck lost J. Lo (supposedly!), television will be critical in how we process 2024’s big events more than it will be remembered for producing its own entertainment and/or artistry.
But boy, is it putting up a fight. The first half of 2024 is replete with admirable, ambitious, and downright astounding series. Lulu Wang’s “Expats” and Issa Lopez’s “True Detective: Night Country” kicked off the year with a staggering one-two combination. “Shōgun” was right on their heels, along with the surprise sensation “Baby Reindeer” and the long-anticipated “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
As Emmy season approached, the hits just kept on coming: Comedy lovers got “Hacks,” “Girls5Eva,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Neil Patrick Harris is paying tribute to Emmy-nominated actor James B. Sikking, his former Doogie Howser, MD co-star, who died July 13 of complications of dementia at the age of 90.
Sikking played Dr. David Howser, the dad of Harris’ Doogie Howser on the ABC sitcom from 1989 to 1993.
“Jim Sikking played my dad in Doogie Howser, MD, and was one of the kindest, wisest, funniest, and most generous people I’ve ever known,” Harris wrote in a post on Instagram. :A true professional. He treated everyone with respect, taught me countless lessons, yet always had a spark of mischief in his eyes. It was an absolute honor to be his son. My condolences to his actual family for their loss. #Rip“

James B. Sikking, the Steven Bochco favorite who portrayed the no-nonsense Lt. Howard Hunter on Hill Street Blues and the good-hearted doctor dad on Doogie Howser, M.D., has died. He was 90.
Sikking died Saturday at his Los Angeles home of complications from dementia, publicist Cynthia Snyder announced.
Although best known for his TV work, Sikking did have notable turns on the big screen as a mocking hitman in John Boorman’s Point Blank (1967), as the stuffy Captain Styles in Leonard Nimoy‘s Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and as the director of the FBI in Alan J. Pakula’s The Pelican Brief (1993).
After spending the better part of two decades showing up on such shows as The Outer Limits, Honey West, The Fugitive, Hogan’s Heroes and Mannix, Sikking was cast as the pipe-smoking Hunter, leader of the Swat-like Emergency Action Team, on NBC’s Hill Street Blues.

I’ve been covering the Emmy Awards since the early 1980s, which admitted makes me something of a fossil. It’s a little bit like hearing my grandparents talking about paying a nickel to go to the movies in the early 1900s. Yes, when I started covering the Emmys, there were just ABC, NBC and CBS and a (very) little PBS. There wasn’t even a Fox yet. If you were on HBO, Showtime or TNT, you were out of luck. You had to compete for something called the CableACE Awards, which stood for “Cable Awards for Cable Excellence Awards.” Not too redundant, huh? HBO was winning everything at the CableACEs every year, so there had ceased to be a point to their ongoing existence.

Kommenden Mittwoch werden die Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Spot blickt auf die aussichtsreichsten Kandidaten und nennt weitere Anwärter auf den so begehrten TV- und Streaming-Preis.
Favoriten (v.l.): „The Bear“, „Rentierbaby“ und „Shōgun“
Am 17. Juli werden die 76. Primetime-Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Die Preisverleihung findet am 15. September statt.

Soap opera fans will have an opportunity to say one last goodbye to “General Hospital” star Jackie Zeman when, come September, Popstar!’s “The Bay” pays homage to the beloved daytime veteran in a special episode dedicated to her. Zeman also co-starred on “The Bay” — which streams on Peacock — playing Sofia Madison.
“The special episode titled ‘Sofia’ will be a celebration of both the Sofia character and Jackie Zeman’s life, with several special guest stars that meant something to Jackie’s legacy,” says showrunner and head writer Gregori J. Martin.
Zeman, who earned five Daytime Emmy nominations — four for her role as prostitute-turned-nurse Bobbie Spencer on “General Hospital,” and one for her work on “The Bay” — died in May 2023 after a “short battle” with cancer. Her legacy on the ABC soap, where she spent more than four decades of her career, was marked this past January with a touching memorial episode and,...

Several Max Originals were rebranded as HBO Originals earlier this year, and now ‘Dune: Prophecy’ and ‘The Penguin’ will join them.
Don’t look now, but it appears the HBO brand is rising from the dead. Warner Bros. Discovery has never tried to really kill HBO, per se, but the decision to name its new streaming service Max and drop the “HBO” from the title in 2023 raised more than a few eyebrows from observers. Now, the company appears to be slowly rolling back that change; in late June, the company announced that it was rebranding several Max Original shows as HBO Originals, but only for titles that were coming out in 2025 or later due to contractual issues. But a new report from Variety states that those issues have been ironed out, and that “Dune: Prophecy” and “The Penguin” — two shows that are set to debut later in 2024 — will also be...

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Now Deadline has an update on Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount, as they’re reporting that the studio has given the greenlight to the Hamada-produced horror film Primate, which has Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur attached to star.
Kotsur won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Coda, becoming the first deaf male actor and only the second deaf actor overall to win an Oscar. Kotsur’s other credits include Wild Prairie Rose, No Ordinary Hero, Universal Signs, The Number 23, and episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Mandalorian, Criminal Minds,...

Emulating what many are expecting at next week’s Emmy Awards nominations, FX’s “The Bear” topped the field with 15 bids followed by Max’s “Hacks” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” with 13 apiece for the Astra TV Awards. The above comedies were followed in the overall nominations tally by ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” CBS’s “Ghosts” and Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” with 11 honors each, while the Prime Video freshman drama “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” also came in at double-digits with 10. Leading the way for limited series were a pair of Netflix offerings, “Baby Reindeer” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” along with Apple TV+’s “Lessons in Chemistry” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” – all with seven bids apiece.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has greenlit the Johannes Roberts horror film Primate, with Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) set to lead the cast. Roberts will direct the Walter Hamada-produced feature, which Roberts co-wrote with Ernest Riera.
Plot details are being kept under wraps.
The project falls under Hamada’s exclusive first-look deal with Paramount which began January 1, 2023, making him “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.”
The former DC Films boss steered DC to its highest-grossing movie Aquaman with $1.1 billion worldwide. He was also behind The Conjuring franchise, the highest-grossing horror series ever with more than $2 billion in global box office, 2017’s It and Matt Reeves’ The Batman, to name a few.
