Everyone of a certain age has a core memory of the iconic “Brat Pack,” even those born after their heyday. But what about the group itself? On June 13, 2024, that is the question that Hulu’s “Brats” asks as actor and director Andrew McCarthy interviews fellow Brat Packers Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Jon Cryer, Timothy Hutton and Lea Thompson.
Centering on 1980s films starring the “Brat Pack” and their profound impact on the young stars’ lives, “Brats” is certified fresh with a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The term was notably coined by New York Magazine writer David Blum (it wasn’t a compliment), who was hoping to gain attention in the journalism world. And yes, he is confronted in the film. Read our full review round-up below.

Hulu’s recent Bon Jovi Documentary has reignited an interest in the music of the 80s and 90s. Now, Brats, Andrew McCarthy’s new Brat Pack documentary promises to delve into the movies of the 80s and a group of actors known as The Brat Pack.
Andrew McCarthy Brat Pack – YouTube Who Coined The Phrase ‘The Brat Pack’?
Before the phrase “The Brat Pack,” actors such as Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez were actors. However, after that monicker, their lives changed. This happened in 1985 when New York Magazine writer David Blum decided to make a play on the “Rat Pack.” This trio consisted of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., a group considered the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Although this was a clever label, it wound up haunting many actors in this group. That is because their livelihood as actors was negatively affected by this label.

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

The road from indie video game to big-screen adaptation for "Five Nights at Freddy's" has been a long one, with an assortment of delays, a full script rewrite, and a director change. Fans were starting to give up hope that the film would ever come to fruition, and considering the absolutely massive fanbase of the existing franchise, that's a whole lot of disappointed people. Fortunately, the "Fnaf" movie is a very real thing, and it's arriving just in time for spooky season 2023. The film features Matthew Lillard as William Afton, Josh Hutcherson as security guard Mike Schmidt, Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa Monroe, and Piper Rubio as Abby Schmidt, Mike's young daughter. Fans have also known for months that "Some Kind of Wonderful" and "Daniel isn't Real" star Mary Stuart Masterson was going to be playing "a villainous role," but no details regarding her character have been revealed ...

Dark and grim, the Five Nights at Freddy’s trailer, released Tuesday, takes a look into Freddy Fazbear and friends’ world that perturbs all the fright and fears that can be expected from the video game and Blumhouse Productions.
The Emma Tammi-directed film, based on 2014’s multi-platform video game of the same name, stars Hunger Games‘ Josh Hutcherson, Scream‘s Matthew Lillard, Some Kind of Wonderful‘s Mary Stuart Masterson and You‘s Elizabeth Lail.
The spine-chilling preview sees Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt and Piper Rubio as his little sister, Abby Schmidt. In order to get by and support them, Mike calls a man named William Afton, played by Lillard, to inquire about a security job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
“This place was huge in the ’80s with the kids. They shut it down years ago. The owner’s just not ready to let it go yet,” Lillard...

It's an age-old question; what happens to all of the cool props and production pieces made during a movie? In some instances, the pieces are preserved in museums or in safekeeping by the studios, but in special cases, the items go home with the cast and crew. Henry Winkler famously kept some of his Fonzie jackets from "Happy Days," to later auction them off to support charity. "Some Kind of Wonderful" director Howard Deutch later married Lea Thompson, who starred in the film, and the couple kept one of the portraits made of her character to hang in their home. And now, "Infinity Pool" star Alexander Skarsgård is the proud owner of his own cloned head.
Directed by Brandon Cronenberg, "Infinity Pool" is a sci-fi horror film about a couple on vacation in a remote land with a zero-tolerance policy on crime who find themselves involved in a tragic accident.

With the popularity of nostalgia-driven shows like "Stranger Things," interest in '80s pop culture always seems to be taking new and exciting directions. One such example is the fascination with the classic movies of the decade. Sure, everyone knows about the heavy hitters like "Back to the Future," " E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," "The Terminator," and "The Breakfast Club." Yet, there are many other films from the 1980s that need respect, and that's what this list is about.
Here, we'll look at the movies of the '80s that deserve some love and devotion. These movies should become references in TV shows, have cosplays made of them, or at least be included in your next '80s movie marathon. So make sure to grab your favorite scrunchie, a bowl of popcorn, and a can of Tab (or whatever soda you can safely drink), so we can totally explore some fantastic...

The 1990 romantic comedy "Pretty Woman" helped launch Julia Roberts' career into the stratosphere. Starring opposite Richard Gere, Roberts played Vivian Ward, a streetwalker with a heart of gold who wins the affection of her cold-hearted client. The role earned Roberts a Best Actress Oscar nomination and turned her into an overnight Hollywood sensation. Her performance prompted Roger Ebert to prophetically write, "Actresses who can do that and look great can have whatever they want in Hollywood." Roberts would become synonymous with the romantic comedy genre.
It is hard to imagine anyone other than Roberts in "Pretty Woman". To do so, we need to go back ... to the future. Heading into the 1990s, Lea Thompson was coming off the massive success of two "Back to the Future" movies and a string of films that included "Casual Sex?" and "Some Kind of Wonderful."

Fans have been clamoring for more of Angie Harmon as A.D.A. Abbie Carmichael since her departure in 2021.

The good news is that Dick Wolf reached out to Harmon when work commenced on Law & Order Season 21.

1987 is one of those years in cinema that define everything that was great about the teen romance genre. We saw it again in 1999, and numerous times since then, but this was also the year John Hughes’ Some Kind of Wonderful was released. This movie was not a Brat Pack vehicle and represented the first Hughes teen romance not to feature Molly Ringwald, and perhaps in spite of these box office draws, it became to many at least, the best of the bunch. The film may not have done much to change the winning John Hughes formula of the

Curiously unadventurous for a sex-positive teen romantic comedy, Sammi Cohen’s “Crush” centers its premise on an age-old recipe: an emotionally bemused heroine desperately pursues her supposed soul mate, when her ultimate the one has been right under her nose all along.
Still, predictability isn’t the real deficit of this well-meaning and progressive Hulu original that aims to land somewhere in the vicinity of “Some Kind of Wonderful” and “American Pie.” After all, some of the most timeless and irresistible romances stem from tales we’ve all heard a million times before. What’s jarring in “Crush” is the absence of some requisite dose of youthful mischief, a sense of stakes and perhaps even a lightly scandalous touch, integral to the spirit of many of the genre staples Cohen and co-writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham attempt to revive on their own terms.

In Buried in Barstow, Harmon stars as Hazel King, a single mother determined to shield her daughter, Joy, from the life she once had while protecting and defending those who can't protect themselves.
Plucked off the streets of Las Vegas at 15, Hazel was trained as a hit woman until a surprising pregnancy drives her to leave it all behind.

Wait a minute, Doc!
Christopher Lloyd recently discussed the initial casting of Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in “Back to the Future” before Michael J. Fox was cast in the iconic role.
As “Back to the Future” fans may already know, Stoltz filmed for six weeks of production before being let go from the project.
“Stoltz is a wonderful actor. I had no idea the change was coming,” Lloyd recalled to GQ. “One night we were shooting the mall beginning sequence, and we were asked to come to one of the trailers at one o’clock in the morning. [Steven] Spielberg was there and he made the announcement of the change.”
Lloyd was worried about rebuilding a repertoire again with a different McFly, saying, “My biggest fear, because I was really working to get Doc right, I thought, ‘I don’t know if I can get it up to do that again,...

One of the more minor asterisks in writer/producer John Hughes' canon is the 1988 comedy "The Great Outdoors," which paired Dan Aykroyd and the late John Candy as mismatched brothers-in-law whose two families come together at a Wisconsin lake resort.
Slapstick hilarity ensued, including water skiing mishaps, a steak-eating contest and a giant bear attack. The movie, which was the third pairing of Hughes and director Howard Deutch after the teen pictures "Pretty in Pink" and "Some Kind of Wonderful," got lousy reviews and broke even at the box office.
But like mining for zinc, studios are apparently looking for any remaining nostalgic artifact from the '80s to...

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

Writer-director John Hughes had just begun to make a name for himself with three films he made for Universal when Ned Tanen lured him over to Paramount with an overall deal designed to turn the filmmaker into a mogul. In less than three years, Hughes wrote, produced, and/or directed five movies for the studio, all of which have now been reissued on Paramount’s “John Hughes 5-Movie Collection” Blu-ray with a generous supply of extra […]

Howard Deutch wasn’t sure he was the right man to oversee “Pretty in Pink.” The aspiring filmmaker had met producer and writer John Hughes while directing a music video for his previous examination of high school social castes, “Sixteen Candles.” However, he’d never overseen a feature film and the prospect terrified him.
“I was honest with John and told him I didn’t feel equipped,” Deutch remembers. “He said, ‘all you have to do is get those performances for me and you can do it.’ That always made me feel secure when I was feeling insecure about so many other things.”
Thirty five years later, “Pretty in Pink” is a certified classic and remains a cinematic touchpoint for generation after generation of teenagers who see their own heartaches, triumphs, and insecurities reflected in the lives of Andie, Duckie, and Blane. The film was recently re-released in theaters by...

Some movies brave enough to tread where only pop songs and poems go, and try to capture all the drama, contradictions and happy, bubbly feelings that come along with romance and love. It’s high-time that we honor them and defend them against their unearned sappy reputations with the best romantic movies on Amazon Prime.

Hey, remember when they released that picture of the CGI movie Sonic the Hedgehog and it was so freakish and unnerving that animators had to work overtime to fix it? Anywho, Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Hulu this month.
The heroic blue hedgehog who just wants to go fast is far from the only exciting new film or TV show coming to Hulu in February 2021. The library titles are unusually packed this month. In addition to Sonic, the sublimely goofy Mars Attacks!, 2020 horror film Possessor, and the first six Star Trek films all arrive on Feb. 1. Later on in the month are Antebellum (Feb. 5) and Nomadland (Feb. 19).
It’s a good thing that the library titles are strong because Hulu isn’t brining many originals of note to the table in February 2021. Into the Dark continues on its spooky mission with the Valentine-centric Tentacles dropping on Feb. 12. That will...

I don’t know if this whole global pandemic is having some sort of adverse effect on me in terms of how I am feeling towards some movies. It may even be the case that binge watching Dawson’s Creek, which has just been released on Netflix, is not really the best idea for my 36 year old teenage-angsty mind. Purely from the title of this movie, and after having watched the trailer for My Summer as a Goth, I went into the film with some pretty low expectations, but I do remember a little independent British flick that I saw earlier this year called Soundtrack to Sixteen that stole my heart so I’m open to being proven wrong…

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

“Sydney Pollack said ‘everything’s a love story’, and it is. Everything is, if you think about it,” says Howard Deutch. He’s chatting to us ahead of the remastered Blu-ray release of Pretty In Pink which he directed from a script by John Hughes, first released some 34 years ago in 1986. It was Deutch’s feature directorial debut, one of several collaborations with Hughes and with his follow up Some Kind Of Wonderful (also written by Hughes) it arguably formed the apex of ‘80s teen romance as we know it.

The films of John Hughes and the resulting compendium of actors who starred in them, lovingly remembered as the Brat Pack, define a particular era of pop culture, inextricably linked with the fashions and customs of 1980s white America.
A common formula comprised of misfits and outsiders was the Hughes charm, perhaps embodied best by muse Molly Ringwald. After the success of 1984’s Sixteen Candles, Hughes wrote 1986’s Pretty in Pink on a whim of the performer’s reverence for the title track by the Psychedelic Furs.
Directing duties were handed off to Howard Deutch, here making his debut (but later directing the Hughes penned Some Kind of Wonderful shortly after in 1987).…...

Banana Split
Stars: Hannah Marks, Dylan Sprouse, Liana Liberato, Luke Spencer Roberts, Meagan Kimberly Smith, Haley Ramm, Jessica Hecht, Addison Reike, Jacob Batalon | Written by Hannah Marks, Joey Power | Directed by Benjamin Kasulke
April (Hannah Marks) has spent the last two years of high school in a relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse), from first frantic make-out session to final tear-stained breakup. In the aimless summer between graduation and college, the newly single April mends her heartbreak by striking up an unexpected friendship with an unlikely candidate: Nick’s new girlfriend, Clara (Liana Liberato).
With an oddball title like Banana Split I was expecting a quirky, just as oddball rom-com. However what you actually get is a touchy tale of two women who should be enemies, after all they’ve both dated and slept with the same guy, but instead find a common bond that leads to a sweet, tender platonic...

Exclusive: As New York City battles through Covid-19, enduring more cases and deaths than anywhere in the world, the film and TV production sector appears to be a long way from resuming its previously brisk pace.
A new option for producers is now poised to open two hours away, however: Upriver Studios in Saugerties, a town along the Hudson River about 10 miles from Woodstock. Upriver will offer about 104,000 square feet of sound stages and other production space in a former manufacturing facility retrofit by a group led by actress and director Mary Stuart Masterson.
“As crazy as it seems to be launching a business in a pandemic,” Masterson said, “it turns out Upriver Studios is the right place at the right time for productions who need to find a safe haven.”
Outside of the city and its suburbs, the effects of the coronavirus have not been nearly as severe. Ulster County,...
