Junkie Xl has become one of the movie business’s most in-demand musical talents. In a recent chat, the composer opened up about scoring blockbusters like Furiosa and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Holkenborg got his start assisting Hans Zimmer on films like Man of Steel. This led to a fruitful partnership with Zack Snyder on movies like the Snyder Cut and Rebel Moon.
He divulged details about returning to the Mad Max world for the Furiosa prequel. Director George Miller told him to disregard the franchise’s past scores – “That was then. I want something new.” Junkie respected Miller’s unique, detail-oriented directing style, saying his sense of minutiae is “mind-boggling.”
In Furiosa, Junkie took on an expanded role by helping with the final sound mix. This gave him control over marrying his music into the film’s overall soundscape. He called it “liberating” and a career highlight.

Update, with statement: A lot was riding on Steve Martin’s near-superhuman ability to spit out an error-free tongue-twisting patter song at crucial moments of the Broadway-themed season of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. Martin did it flawlessly, but the stakes aren’t over yet: The song, “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” has just been Emmy nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics — and a win finally would crown songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul with the Egot laurel.
You can watch Martin perform the song in the Season 3 episode below.
A second pair of songwriters credited on the song, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have plenty of Tonys and Grammys but not the necessary Oscar that would put them into Emmy’s Egot race.

The action-packed trailer for Paramount’s Gladiator II has racked up 215 million global cross-platform views in just a few days and suggests Ridley Scott might have pulled off his long-awaited sequel to his Oscar-winning 2000 epic. The new film is led by Paul Mescal as a grown-up Lucius and also stars Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington in what looks to be a rousing spectacle.
But there is a cohort of fans who claim they are not entertained. While Paramount’s official trailer on YouTube (watch it below) ranks as one of the studio’s most-watched in a 24-hour-period ever, and plenty of fans have been wildly enthusiastic, it also has 133,000 likes vs. 279,000 dislikes and counting. That’s very unusual for a major tentpole release.

Back in 1994, The Lion King revolutionized family animated features. For one, Disney give it their all in terms of the animation style… and even 30 years on, no one can deny the significant impact the film’s score and voice acting have left. As funny as it may be now to see cat videos on the internet mimicking Scar and Mufasa’s “cliffhanger” scene, Mufasa’s death, back in the day, was the shocker of the millennium!
Mufasa’s final moments | The Lion King (1994), Disney
To see little Simba try to wake his father after his fall was, and continues to be, a tearjerker. As harrowing as it is to see the light leave Mufasa’s eyes upon learning Scar’s betrayal, the scene continues to remain etched in our memories owing to the amazing performances of Jeremy Irons and James Earl Jones.

From his stint as a child actor to now being one of Hollywood’s greatest directors, Ron Howard has surely come a long way. The Academy Award winner has undoubtedly produced a wide range of films that cover every genre. Bringing another of his masterpieces, Eden, to the screen, the filmmaker demonstrated once more that a superb cast can accomplish what even the best marketing campaigns in the world cannot.

The first trailer for Gladiator 2 has recently been released, and the digital Colosseum is already buzzing with differing opinions as Ridley Scott’s film promises to be a thundering spectacle.
The upcoming movie will not feature Russell Crowe’s character, Maximus, who died at the end of the previous installment. Rather, it will carry on Maximus’ legacy and concentrate on Paul Mescal’s Lucius Verus. Along with popular actor Pedro Pascal and Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, the sequel will also star Joseph Quinn.

Yet, despite the smorgasbord of sensational battles fit, there’s a discordant note in the symphony of chaos—a rap anthem by Jay-Z and Ye, No Church in the Wild—that sticks out like a sore thumb in ancient Rome.

Tgm’s filmmakers have just released the teaser of their next project titled F1. The title and teaser appear to have both been released in the same seconds. First, it’s a ‘Filmed For IMAX’ movie, shot just like Tgm (Top Gun: Maverick) but with an unknown cinema camera by Sony. Check out the teaser below.
F1 movie. A screenshot and the Sony Cinema Camera inside the race car cockpit F1- That’s the title!
F1 is an upcoming American sports action drama film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, directed by Joseph Kosinski, and shot by cinematographer Claudio Miranda. Btw, Hans Zimmer is behind the music. That would be the winning Tgm (Top Gun: Maverick) team. The story is about Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a Formula One driver who raced in the 1990s and had a horrible crash, forcing him to retire from Formula One and start racing in other disciplines.

Daniel Brühl went to “Eden” and survived to tell the tale.
“I can’t compare it to any of my films. I’ve never done anything like it,” he says, teasing Ron Howard’s upcoming thriller. “Two days ago, I was doing the dubbing and saw Jude Law giving me a hard time on screen. We are both giving each other a hard time in this film.”
Shot in Australia – “We shot in nature, in the wilderness. All of it!” – it also features Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby and Sydney Sweeney as a group of people heading to the Galápagos Islands. Hans Zimmer composed the score.

Ridley Scott is one of the most prolific filmmakers during the 70s and even today, he still produces epic-scale movies that fans of different generations enjoy. An auteur like him would absolutely want to protect his own franchises and see to it that his own vision from the beginning flows continuously to their successors.

Apparently, sequels weren’t a big thing back in the days, and even though his own titles such as Aliens and Blade Runner spawned their own follow-up movies, they were no longer directed by Scott.

During his interview with Vanity Fair, director Ridley Scott expressed his regret over not making sequels to two of his much-beloved franchises.

To close out the week, Warner Bros. and Legendary have dated a pair of upcoming releases: an untitled Denis Villeneuve Event Film and the next installment in the MonsterVerse series, a.k.a. Godzilla x Kong 3.
First up, the untitled Denis Villeneuve Event Film has been dated for December 18, 2026.
While we were previously under the assumption that Villeneuve was developing a drama film based on the nonfiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario as his next film, both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline now believe that he's shifted gears back to the sandy dunes of Arrakis and that the December date is actually being reserved for Dune: Part Three (rumored title Dune: Messiah), which will be his next project.
However, before they can formally announce the film and its now-booked release date, Villeneuve will have to lock the script, which, as far as we know, is close to finished as he...

Hans Zimmer is now among the pantheon of great music composers in films of the 21st Century alongside masters like John Williams, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, A.R Rahman, and many others. His musical contribution to films like Dune, Gladiator, Interstellar, The Last Samurai, etc elevated the proceedings of the films and added a certain mood to them.

In addition to live-action films, he also scored many successful animated films such as Kung Fu Panda, The Prince of Egypt, and The Lion King. The famed composer always puts a part of himself in the music he creates. However, with The Lion King, his late father became his muse and the tragedy involving him inspired the darker musical score in the film.

The James Bond franchise has grown stupendously well, bringing in several impeccable actors, characters, directors, artists, and more. From its inception to now, the franchise has collected a range of talent yet it did once famously reject one of Hollywood’s Goat, Steven Spielberg. However, that is not the only mistake the franchise made, for it failed to bring in one musical genius for a long, long time.

Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are on the verge of Egot status… that is, if Emmy voters nominate their song from “Only Murders in the Building” and it winds up winning three months from now.
Pasek and Paul — already Oscar winners for “La La Land” and Tony and Grammy winners for “Dear Evan Hansen” — could finally manage that feat with the witty comic patter song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” sung by Steve Martin and co-written with fellow Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the third season of the Hulu comedy-drama.
They are among the many prominent songwriters who have entered songs in this year’s Emmy competition. Voting began Thursday, with approximately 550 members of the Television Academy music peer group eligible to vote in seven music categories. Voting ends June 24 and the nominations will be announced July 17.

Composer Blake Neely called his score for Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air a tribute to his mentor, the late Michael Kamen. Kamen gave Neely his first job as an orchestrator on Band of Brothers, the first in Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ World War II series trilogy.
“It’s a love letter to Michael,” Neely said, choking up at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event talking about Kamen, who died in 2003. “I got my start in this business because of Michael Kamen. On Band of Brothers I was one of his orchestrators. Then we lost him.”
The producers of The Pacific asked Neely to work with Hans Zimmer and Geoff Zanelli. Neely did so reluctantly, but stopped producer Gary Goetzman in his tracks when he began asking Neely to collaborate again on Masters.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films are visual spectacles, but there’s one thing that elevates the look of the films completely. Hans Zimmer’s Oscar-winning musical score in Dune and his subsequent work in Dune: Part Two were both integral parts of Villeneuve’s storytelling. However, unlike Christopher Nolan, the Sicario director did one thing to avoid limiting the musician’s perspective.

During a recent interview, Zimmer shared that Villeneuve never showed him the script for the films. The director wanted the score to come out of the conversations he had with Zimmer about Frank Herbert’s classic novel. Interestingly, their collaboration began on Blade Runner 2049 after Villeneuve parted ways with his frequent collaborator Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Christopher Nolan is one of the definitive filmmakers of this generation. The Oscar-winning director recently made the biopic Oppenheimer, which won big at the Academy Awards this year. The director is known for his blockbuster films, which are as cerebral as they are thrilling and have garnered a loyal worldwide fanbase.
Nolan has also been a vocal supporter of other films. While he has professed his love for Stanley Kubrick, he has also appreciated films that are not considered high art such as the Fast and the Furious franchise. However, one film that reportedly blew his mind was Emma Stone’s 2016 musical La La Land, for which she won her first Academy Award.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films are seen as technical masterpieces not only for the director’s unique vision in bringing Frank Herbert’s narratives to life, but also for the haunting score by one of the world’s prolific composers, Hans Zimmer. The musician’s soaring notes that brought the vast Arrakis sands to life, made viewers immerse themselves even more fervently into Herbert’s world.

The MCU has had its ups and downs in the last few years, but it’s still the most successful franchise ever. What started as a single movie in 2008 has grown over 16 years into the largest cinematic universe, including both live-action movies and TV shows.
Despite this success, it’s become common for famous directors to criticize the MCU and superhero movies. Big names like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Francis Ford Coppola have mocked them, saying superhero movies aren’t true cinema.

MCU has had it’s up and downs in the last couple of years, but despite that, it’s still the most successful franchise of all times. What started out as a single movie released in 2008 over the course of 16 years grew into the largest cinematic universe to date which includes both live-action movies, and TV Shows.
Despite this impressive track record, it’s become sort of a trend among high-profile directors to criticize the MCU and superhero movies in general. Some of the biggest names in the industry like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Francis Ford Coppola mocked the premises and the executions, lauding that superhero movies are no true cinema.

Martin Scorsese is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in Hollywood, and even at the age of 81 is churning out pieces of art. The filmmaker last helmed the crime-Western Killers of the Flower Moon, and is already gearing up for his next project. He remains one of the few individual voices still making films today.
Scorsese’s statements about cinema and the way superhero films were taking over the medium had drawn a lot of flack from fans. The director’s comparison of Marvel movies to theme parks sparked outrage as well as a popular meme template. However, even he would agree to one scene from Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel as cinema.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, which released this year, boasted an incredible cinematic experience for the audiences. One of the primary highlights of the Dune franchise has been the Sandworms. The colossal spice-producing worms on the planet of Arrakis were hauntingly beautiful and provided an exceptional theater experience.
One might think that the sandworm must be the toughest part of the franchise based on Frank Herbert’s works. However, the mastermind behind both the Dune films, Villeneuve has claimed that the Desert Mouse was no cakewalk as well.

The Lion King – Featuring the voices of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala and Donald Glover as Simba, Disney’s “The Lion King” is directed by Jon Favreau. © 2019 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved. When Disney made the original animated version of The Lion King, the studio invested heavily in the film’s music, enlisting Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice for the film’s original songs and Hans Zimmer for its score. Of course, it was an investment that paid off handsomely — the soundtrack album has sold more than 7 million copies, and all four of The Lion King’s Oscar nominations were for the film’s music.
