Alien Voices is none other than Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie teaming up to read classic books by HG Wells and others. That was as good a reason as any for me to pick this one up and revisit a book that I enjoyed very much but might not have re-read otherwise. If you don't know why I would care that Nimoy and de Lancie are reading a book to me, well, I'm not going to be able to convince you why you'd want to listen to this one.

Nimoy has the bulk of the duties here, playing the part of the Time Traveler while de Lancie is the friend narrating the tale. They perform the book as though they were reading a stage play, which I found very engaging. Adding some others to fill out the cast, each "person" in the book gets their own distinctive voice. Nimoy is in fine form here. He brings a strong voice to the work, giving it just a bit of an over-the-top dramatic style that fits his character well. He never goes too far off the edge, doing a good job of reining himself in if he strays too far from a calm narration. All jokes aside about being "Spock", Nimoy is a quality actor and that shows here. De Lancie doesn't have as much to work with, at least not this time, but he keeps the steady pace going and interjects at just the right moments.

The book itself held up very well in a second time around. Wells' fiction does not contain much that seems out of place. His explanations of the future, even going so far as to fairly predict the far, far future of a decaying earth, are pretty good for his time period of writing. Though one can argue about his violent underclass morlocks, the idea of a world where the human race has split between the haves and the have nots and the idea that lack of struggle turns to laziness are compelling to argue. (One could say that America's relative ease of the past 60 years is leading to problems now.) He also writes a compelling narration, especially since the Time Traveler doesn't get a lot of time to dialog with others and has to keep a monologue interesting.

Those of you who are fans of a certain series of TV shows definitely need to check this out. Those looking for a pleasing audio book to listen to should also find a good fit in this one. (Library, 05/08)

Trebby's Take: A very logical choice. Recommended!

Listened to on CD. A full blown radio play production featuring Spock and Q from Star Trek! Very well done. Was only two CDs so you can listen to it no time at all. I had seen the movie a number of times and really enjoyed it. I didn't think it was a short story. So if you are a fan of sci-fi this is almost a must listen to.

A well-done dramatization, with minimal changes. A good choice for none of these American performers to affect a British accent.
