For a historical romance book, the title of this book definitely caught my attention! What would a romance look like with a suitor who has cooled his heels? In Book Two of her Second Chances series, author Sandra Merville Hart demonstrates well how to make this concept work in her latest inspirational romance novel. This book features Cora Welch, one of the twins adopted by Samuel and Rose from Book One, and her on-again-off-again beau Ben Findlay. While this book can be read as a stand alone, I feel that reading the titles in order would be beneficial due to the background information provided. Plus, it was nice to revisit Samuel and Rose and their family.

A significant incident transpired that brought out strong feelings in both Cora and Ben and caused them each to look introspectively at their own character. Faith is a strong component of this story and I really liked how the author wove topics of faith and trust in God as well as forgiveness into a rich inspirational tapestry with more than one story of redemption. While the pace seemed to slack off slightly in the middle, it greatly picked up in the second half en route to a beautifully written, redemptive conclusion. The historical attention to detail provided by Ms. Hart was extensive and made what happened in 1884 seem to jump off the pages. If you are looking for an inspiring, well-researched historical romance, I would recommend this one.

This book was a step above as far as historical fiction goes--changed my way of thinking a bit.

The time period is not your typical and the setting is definitely not your everyday. I've never read a book about Cincinnati. The time frame is the early 1900s and the times are a'changing.

The heroine is attending school to become a kindergarten teacher--a newfangled idea. The hero was a newsboy and is working his way up the ranks to hopefully become a reporter. Another different aspect is that the characters had already been courting when something happens to interrupt the expected timeline. Then, I love how there isn't a fast fix, but a realistic working to recover true love.

I learned a lot and loved the growth of the characters--enjoy!

I did receive this book free as a part of a Celebrate Lit tour, but the opinions are my own.

Cincinnati, Ohio 1883

In this second of the series, there was a great deal of history woven in. Quite a lot happened in one year!

Cora and Ben had some maturing to do and it was a pleasure to watch that happen over time. Their vocations were a large part of the novel. In particular, I enjoyed Ben's career as a reporter. His peers and boss seemed realistic with some trying to sabotage his work and reputation while one peer helped him grow as a writer and employee.

The author brought the time period alive in an engaging story line. I look forward to the next in the series.

My gratitude to CelebrateLit for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

I love it when I get a chance to reunite with characters that I've met before, and this book does just that. Twins Cora and John Welch were adopted by Samuel & Rose in the book, A Not So Convenient Marriage, and they're now young adults facing new adventures and new challenges in Cincinnati and nearby Hamilton. I'm familiar with these settings because I live in neighboring northeastern Kentucky, so I loved that author Sandra Merville Hart mentions many of the places that I've heard of: Fountain Square, the Suspension Bridge, and the Zoological Gardens, along with Red Stockings baseball games! A Not So Persistent Suitor features society as it was in the 1880s, and it's a vivid reminder of the drastic changes in courtship and the roles of women. Cora's desire is to become a Kindergarten teacher and she mentions to Ben Findlay that she might want to continue teaching if they should marry. Imagine that conversation occurring today! It's a rarity for a wife not to work!

Hart's love for this area and her wonderful ability to combine historical details with fiction made this story especially appealing! Ben's reporting of dangerous riots after a murder trial prompted me to learn more about the Courthouse Riots that occurred in 1884, and his hurt and confusion over reuniting with his long-absent father offer the perfect opportunity for an inspiring faith thread. Cora and Ben both have personal issues to resolve, so strong faith is needed and the ability to forgive is absolutely necessary.

I truly enjoyed this story and I look forward to reading the next book in this Second Chances series. John Welch has been a supportive brother and loyal friend---will he finally have his own chance of romance and happiness? I recommend A Not So Persistent Suitor to all who enjoy historical Christian romance.

I received a copy of this book from the author, but I was never asked to post a favorable review. These are my own thoughts

A Not So Persistent Suitor is the first book I’ve read by this author. Having not read the first book in this series, I was a bit lost in the beginning, but it didn’t take long to become absorbed by Cora and Ben’s relationship challenges.

I liked Cora and her passion for teaching children. She has a gentle heart, and I admired her ways. I liked Ben too, and I wanted them to both see each other’s hearts and have a stronger ability to understand and forgive. I was so pleased that other relationships within the story were also dealt with. Everyone deals with difficult decisions and consequences, and I enjoyed seeing how it all played out.

With themes of trust, forgiveness, and faith, this is an enjoyable and inspiring story.

I enjoy learning about other places and past time periods in history. This compelling story gives readers an insider’s view to both the workings of a Kindergarten Training School and the reporters’ experiences at a city newspaper in the 1880s in addition to a soda/sweet shop, where Cora works. The main characters, Cora Welch and Ben Findlay, each pursue their dreams and must face their own challenges and struggles as well as to the consequences of the choices they make plus with various relationships. This leads to personal conflicts and character growth. The tale is believable and easy to picture from the way the author portrays the people and places, but fairly predictable. The novel presents these realistic characters and the plot in a gentle way that is easy to engage with and offers an intriguing drama. Book clubs might find it a worthy choice for discussion. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. all opinions are my own.

I greatly enjoyed the first book to Sandra Merville Hart’s Second Chances series, A Not So Convenient Marriage. I was excited to read the follow up to it, A Not So Persistent Suitor. I enjoyed it just as much as the first. Even though it is part of a series, I believe it can be read as a stand alone. I adored Cora and Ben’s story. I had to keep reading to see if they get their second chance. A wonderful lesson of the power of forgiveness. I loved it.

I am giving A Not So Persistent Suitor five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historic fiction. I can not for the release of the third installment from the Second Chances series, A Not So Peaceful Journey, in June 2023.

I received a paperback copy of A Not So Persistent Suitor from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

I love the title of this book because it fits so well & so concisely with what the story was about! Ben and Cora's story will transport you to another time when "rules" of courting were followed, and relationships were taken more seriously than they are today! Ben and Cora had an "understanding" that they were courting but then an incident at Ben's work early in the book causes both of them to step back and take time for introspection. Today, we wouldn't think anything of it but those were different times. Cora's family and her twin brother, John, added a lot to the story. Ms. Hart's consistent use of Cincinnati's history in the 1880's as the backdrop for what happens to the characters is phenomenal. The historical events drive the characters to make decisions and shape their lives. It was fascinating. Their growth throughout the book was enjoyable. You don't have to read the first book in the series, but it will certainly help to know more about who the various characters are and what their backgrounds are. I really liked Ben's growth regarding his father. Forgiveness is hard but it's possible. The story does slow down a few times but picks back up to keep you involved once again!

Title: A Not So Persistent Suitor (Second Chances Series #2)
Author: Sandra Melville Hart
Pages: 316
Year: 2023
Publisher: Wild Heart Books
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Readers will enjoy following Cora Welch’s journey as she works to fulfill her dream of becoming a kindergarten teacher. Cora is the adopted daughter of Samuel and Rose Walker whom audiences enjoyed in A Not So Convenient Marriage, which I recommend as it is a touching tale. Cora is in Cincinnati, working at a soda shop while also pursuing her studies. Her twin brother, John, works at a local newspaper and lives in a boarding house close to where Cora lives. Ben Findlay has been courting Cora and works at the same newspaper as her brother. Ben’s past holds broken dreams and tough times, and that may just be the obstacle to being able to have a future with Cora.
Ben never got a higher education due to his father’s absence, mother’s death, and no income. He started as a young man, selling newspapers. He wants to write his own column for the paper, but he lacks experience. However, due to a demotion in his job, he gains an advocate who helps him learn the job and how to work towards becoming a reporter. Cora has a strong faith, but Ben’s is floundering until he experiences a life-changing event and draws near to God.
What transpires in the story is moving with the aspect of history, faith, family, and friendship. Sandra Melville Hart has woven an entertaining novel set in Cincinnati in the late 1800s, so make sure to read the extra notes after enjoying the novel. There was a lot of the history of Ohio that I wasn’t aware of, and it was a thrill to discover how far back the author went in learning what happened long ago. I was amazed and thankful that people from that era wrote about what happened and how it impacted the people.
I believe the author did a great job portraying how the actions of parents can be both positive and harmful, but with a note of hope. The faith of the characters wasn’t cookie-cutter but portrayed as authentic and requiring sometimes moment-by-moment decisions by many in the story. It was also good to see how Cora relied on and listened to the advice of her adopted mother, and her heart to see children learn. I recommend her Second Chances series as well as her earlier works,; they are well worth the time spent to read and enjoy.

The author captured the time period so well that I pictured myself walking the town and visiting Cora at the shop where she works. Her dream is to be a kindergarten teacher and I loved following her on her journey to fulfill her dream. She is sweet, kind and has a gift for reaching children. I found it interesting that the author gave us a character that wanted to teach children at a young age and give everything to this vocation.

Ben was so endearing and I loved his flawed character. He seemed so realistic and his emotions could be felt through the pages. He wants to be the best news reporter and finds himself having to prove himself to his boss. There is someone in the office that is jealous of Ben and tries to sabotage him at every turn. I thought Ben handled this well and showed how he wouldn’t fall for the lies that were being spread about him.

The story is very entertaining and I especially liked the two big news stories focused on devastation of a city and a murder trial that sets off riots in the city. When the author described the floods I could see the water rising and the hopelessness people felt. Cora decides that while she can’t attend school right now, she will volunteer to help those who have been displaced due to the flood. I loved this part because it shows how we should help others in need. The riots were vivid and I felt tension in the air as people wanted to take the law int9 their own hands.

The best part of the story for me was when Ben sees his father after many years. There is anger in Ben’s heart and he has a hard time seeing his father. The author uses this as an illustration of forgiveness. All those years Ben wasted turning away from God because he was angry has caught up with him. As he and his father begin a new relationship there is hope.

The ending is beautiful and wraps up the story with a new beginning for some, forgiveness and letting go of the past and finding unconditional love. I loved how the author uses each character to teach us about faith and never giving up.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I am a fan of Historical Fiction and I really enjoy reading books that are part of a series. . A Not So Persistent Suitor by Sandra Merville Hart is the latest book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 2 in the new series, Second Chances. I had the honor of reading Book 1 in this series and was excited to read this book also.

We are taken back to Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1880s. Cora Welch has some dreams for her future and is devasted when those dreams might not become a reality. Cora is set on becoming a Kindergarten Teacher and marrying her boyfriend Ben Findlay. She learns that Ben is making some life choices that she doesn't agree with. Ben become an orphan at age 13 and since then his determination to achieve goals in life has been in high priority. He LOVES his job as a Reporter but would LOVE to be promoted to the BEST. He decides to take his Boss's daughter to a Banquet and now he has probably destroyed any chances of his Boss promoting him and also lost the trust of Cora. Will Cora see her life dreams come true? Will Ben be able to regain the trust of Cora? Is there still a chance of marriage between Ben and Cora? Will Ben see his Career reach new heights or did he destroy that chance in life?

I LOVE when a book gets me intrigued from the very beginning and this book did just that. Cora knows what she wants in life and sets her heart on achieving those dreams. She is very independent, yet also knows marriage is something she wants. Ben is very career focused and will do what he can to secure that dream job. I was shocked when Ben did things that were hurtful to so many. The book has many twists and turns, but the Historical part is so wonderful. The book is about Dreams, forgiveness, and love. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. WONDERFUL BOOK!

I have to say I read the first book in this series prior to this one and knew immediately that I had to read this one. In fact, I really think there should be at least two or three more books in this series because I really want to read them! This author has an amazing way of writing that draws you in so that you just can’t leave. The characters are strong personalities and have real feelings and real problems. I loved getting to know them and getting to know some better that we met in the first book.

If you read the first book you’ll know that Cora had a rough go of it as a child and she and her twin are super close. So it’s no surprise that they went to Cincinnati for college together. They are mostly inseparable. In fact, Cora begins dating John’s friend Ben from the paper where he works. Cora sees wedding bells in their future but things get rocky when Ben escorts someone else to a banquet. He thought no strings were attached but maybe they were?

Can Cora forgive him? Not just for taking another girl but also for not telling her? And what of her dream to teach kindergarten back near her family? Will he leave the city for her or will they have to part ways?

I loved Ben’s character and how so much of his early life was like the twins so they could understand and “get” each other. This is not only a wonderful book but a wonderful series and I hope you get a chance to read both books. And hopefully, more books to come.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

A Not so Persistent Suitor by author Sandra Merville Hart is Book 2 in her Second Chances Series. The first was A Not So Convenient Marriage. This is a Christian historical novel. Even though this book can be read as a stand alone, reading Book One would be helpful due to the background information provided. It had been a while since I had read Book One and at times I was confused with the characters.

Set in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1880s, this is the story of Cora Welch, twin sister of John. It is also the tale of her sometime boyfriend, Ben Findlay. Both Ben and John work at the newspaper while Cora goes to school to be a kindergarten teacher and works in a sweet shop. One of the things I enjoyed about the book was the unique soda Flavor of the Day at the shop where she worked.

The author included a lot of history which I appreciated. I love books that leave me with information that I previously did not know. It is evident that she did a lot of research for this novel. There is a strong Christian message which is another thing I love in Christian books. Timeless life lessons were included, also.

The characters were well defined. Some were wonderful with nice characters while others were downright scoundrels. Details help me picture the setting of a few places but were absent in much of the others. There are a few twists and turns that for me were easy to guess. For the most part I did enjoy this book but not as much as Book One. It took me longer to get invested in it and seemed a bit slower.

I would recommend it to lovers of historical fiction. It has a nice message of friendship, redemption, work ethic, and is a sweet romance. I rate it a 3.5. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

This is the second book in the Second Chances series, and this story focuses on Cora Welsh, one of the twins that Samuel and Rose adopted due to their second chance marriage. Cora is studying to become a kindergarten teacher, and that is still a new profession in the year 1883. She is going to school in Cincinatti, Ohio, and although I should be familiar with that city, the author pointed out many sites and historical detail that sent me looking for pictures.

Cora is courting Ben Findlay, a newspaper reporter. She comes back from a summer visit with her family to find out that Ben, at the request of his boss, escorted his boss's daughter to a function. Well, that is when trouble starts. Ben realizes that he should have told Cora, but jealousy has a way of taking a life of its own.

There are many trials that Cora and Ben must see themselves through before they can even think about getting married. Not just the jealousy issue, but also the mess that Ben finds himself at work and the issue of his long-lost father. And Ben's own faith comes into question, and he asks himself what he believes. Is he more like his father than he thought?

I enjoyed reading more about this family and getting to see the twins who had lived through so much in the last book, not only thrive but reach for the stars as they were loved and cared for by their adoptive family. I look forward to John and Rennie's story next.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

A Not So Persistent Suitor is book two in the second chances series that is written by : Sandra Merville Hart. One of the things that I love about this author is how she transports you back in time with her stories. She does careful research to ensure that the story is as real feeling as possible. This book is set in Cincinnati, Ohio during the 1880's - which is one of my favorite time periods.

Cora Welch (she is one of the twins that is adopted in book one, while this can be read as a stand alone you will want to read book one to get the full history of the characters) wants to be a teacher - and she wants to marry her twin brother's best friend, Ben. Cora is away at school and Ben is trying to climb to the top as a news reporter. Because of this there is someone that is trying to sabotage Ben at every possible chance and this causes some issues.

Cora and Ben grow a lot during this book. When Ben is spotted escorting his bosses daughter, Cora does not trust him anymore. I liked seeing God working in both of their lives. The author also writes in some vivid scenes of floods and murders that cause havoc in the city. I felt the way the author wrote these events that I was standing there watching it unfold.

I am so glad that I have been introduced to this author. I love her work. She researches and writes this time period flawlessly. The characters are well written, the story line intriguing. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

A Not So Persistent Suitor by Sandra Merville Hartis is a Christian Historical Romance. Cora Welch dreams of being a kindergarten teacher, which is just coming into existence. She also dreams of marrying her beau – Ben Findlay. Ben Findlay, Cora’s twin brother’s best friend, works towards becoming the best reporter in the city.

When Cora returns to the city following a school break, she learns Ben took his boss’ daughter to a fancy banquet. This story illustrates how one bad choice can destroy trust between people.

The book also illustrates how Cora’s brother faces challenges of his own from the lady who wants him to marry her. The lady believes Cora’s brother only stays in the city for Cora’s protection. I really enjoyed reading about the interactions between Cora and the men. I also enjoyed reading about the interactions at the newspaper. The author masterfully dealt with the effects one co-worker’s comments can destroy relationships, trust, and opportunities.

With orphans, jealousy, estranged family members, and more, this book kept me reading. The pace of the story is excellent. The characters are well-developed. The author made me feel as though I was part of the story. I could see in my mind’s eye everything that was happening. So if you enjoy Christian works of historical fiction, check out this book for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

What I think you should know:
A Not So Persistent Suitor, a Christian Historical Fiction by Sandra Merville Hart is the second book in her Second Chances Series. This book did have many of the same characters from the first book and may be enjoyed most if read after the first book, however it can be read as a standalone if needed. The story starts in Cincinnati, Ohio in the fall of 1883.

What I think about this book:
This was a really unique story, about a man who really likes a girl, but realizes that he doesn’t have his life together enough to pursue her. I was frustrated by how the author portrayed Cora’s reaction about Ben taking another girl on a date, I feel like those around her diminished her ability to have honest reactions. It was interesting to see how Cora and Ben learned to navigate a friendship when both of them really wanted more. I appreciated the information about the start of kindergartens. I enjoyed many of the historical details that the author put into the book. I am interested to see John’s in the next book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Cora is planning on finishing up her education to be a kindergarten teacher then start the new chapter of her life. She thoroughly enjoys teaching, even if her education is taking her farther from her family than she would like to be. Courting Ben and spending time with her brother definitely helps the distance. When Ben makes a decision to help his career, it jeopardizes their relationship and makes Cora question if he is the man for her.

The growth of both characters was well thought of and gradual, which made it more realistic. I enjoyed the dynamics of the characters as they tried to move towards a second chance. The book revealed aspects of Cincinnati history that I was not familiar with.

The book is part of a series but could be read as a standalone. I have read both written so far in the series so it was pleasant to see how life was continuing for characters from the last book. I am excited to see what the next book will bring to the storyline.

I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

A Not So Persistent Suitor, by Sandra Merville Hart, is the second book in the Second Chances series. This is a Christian historical romance that is wonderfully written and fun to read. I enjoyed how I was able to imagine what was happening.
Cora is a young lady attending school to be a kindergarten teacher and has plans to move back to her hometown to teach.
Ben is a struggling news paper reporter who wants to excel at his job. While his writing is exceptional, someone in the office is doing things to make it look bad.
This is a nice story to read. I enjoyed the faith, strength, determination, and energy Cora has to for education and goal towards being a teacher. Ben possesses the same qualities when it comes to his writing. I appreciate how Ben is struggling with issues from his past and how God brings answers for him. I especially enjoyed how Ben and Cora work to find options for their futures with jobs and each other.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical romance book set in 1883 Cincinnati, Ohio.
The author wonderfully describes many landmarks around the city that make you feel like you are there.
Well developed characters make you feel like you are part of their lives as well.
Cora Welch is studying to become a kindergarten teacher as well as holding a part time job. She deals with misinterpreted jealousy and wondering what her future will hold. She had such a kind, sweet and helpful personality.
Her brother John works at the local newspaper. They were adopted as teens by a loving family. I admired their work ethics.
Ben Findlay is Cora’s beau who works at the local newspaper. He has to deal with his hard work being sabotaged by some as well as encouraged by others. He also holds a deep hurt by a family member.
Cora and John put their own plans of a future together on hold while they learn important life and faith lessons.
The ending was satisfying and will have you cheering on this sweet couple.

I felt like I was dropped into the middle of a book and was confused about who was who even though it was acting like I should know who everyone was already. It wasn't until I was about 1/6 of the way into the book before I finally clicked who everyone was. It is important to read the first book in the series first so you know who everyone is. I really liked the historical facts and events that were included in the book. The biblical faith thread was also very nice. The book didn't flow very well for me but that is because of my own personal reading preferences.

I thought this was a good story. I liked seeing Ben grow in his faith and career before he continued his courtship with Cora. I liked that Cora also realized that she had so things to work on before she and Ben could continue towards marriage. I also learned a lot about Cincinnati in the 1800s that I did not know. I thought that part of the story was very well researched and told. I liked seeing Ben and Cora develop as friends before continuing to court. I thought it showed maturity in the characters. I enjoyed reading this story and would recommend it.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

Cora ❤️ Ben

I loved to see the twins (Cora and John, from book 1) grown up and making their own way. John works at a newspaper while
Cora is going to college to become a kindergarten teacher. Cora has a suitor, Ben that also works as a reporter. I really liked the story being infused with the historical facts like the fountain and the flood. Great reading there. There were some high emotional times as well, like families survival during the flood and the riot against the jail. What I liked best was seeing how God worked in their lives and Ben and Cora coming together with full faith in God.

I’m amazed at how this author can take a simple story about the struggles of two young people in the past and touch a reader’s heart. With each chapter, I felt Cora’s emotions as they ranged from jealousy to remorse and elation over her relationship with Ben. And who hasn’t experienced the pain of feeling not good enough for the job or the promotion or another person? This is why readers keep returning to Hart’s books. And the kindergarten rhymes she includes are a treasure.

I love this story. It is a sweet romance that tells of forgiveness. I am glad that it also shares the Gospel without being preachy. I believe even unbelievers would like this story and not be affronted by the message within the pages. I would love to read another book about these characters, because these characters all have changes coming in their lives as the book ended.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.

A Lovely Romance

The author did a great job with portraying life in Cincinnati in the 1880s. The characters are endearing as the reader feels the challenges they face.
