I've loved stories with blacksmith heroes ever since reading To Win Her Heart by Karen Witemeyer. There's something about the strength and work ethic that is so appealing. I was disappointed that some of the stories in this collection portrayed blacksmithing as a lesser profession and something to get out of in order to improve their lives and social standing. I'm sure that was true in some eras and locations, but my favorite stories showed it as an honorable profession that is needed and appreciated. I think the story that did that the best was the last one, set in late 19th century California. Most of the stories were entertaining to read, yet I struggled to connect with the characters' emotions. I believe all the authors are new-to-me, and I always appreciate these collections that allow me to sample their writing style.

I really enjoy reading Barbour's novella collections. Each one focuses on a certain subject along with a faith filled messages in each story. This one is about Blacksmiths in the late 1700's and the 1800's.
We find these blacksmiths in areas such as Pennsylvania,Cornwall,England,Virginia and California.
Yes these are primitive times and there are hardships. But we as humans have the capability to overcome hardships with faith and perseverance we can overcome. Faith filled messages are encouraging in these romantic reads.

A wonderful set of all new novellas featuring the hardworking men of the blacksmith trade. This is one of the best collections I have ever read! Every single one was a gem! From the tensions of 1774 Philadelphia, 1798 Cornwall (Poldark fans will love it), 1861 Virginia, to 1870 California, each historical setting played an important part in the story. I loved them all. There were many instances of characters facing opposition and prejudice, and a need to forgive others for deeply hurting them. A thread of faith is present in the stories, but not overdone.
A tender, clean romance caps off each tale with a few sighworthy moments.
Highly recommend to readers who enjoy historical Christian romances. Solid 5 stars!

This is the 5th Barbour Publishing historical romance collection I've been part of. Each one is "my favorite" when they come out. But I have to say - all biases parted at the edge of the keyboard - that is truly is my favorite. Okay, I'm a sucker for a hunky blacksmith ... but who isn't?!

Ignoring my own:

Amanda's "Forging Forever" is set in Cornwall. If you loved Poldark - you'll love this one! If you haven't watched the Masterpiece Theater Poldark series - you'll want to after reading this one!

Angela's "A Tempered Heart" is set during the Civil War and while it touches on the slavery we all think about when we think Civil War and slavery, it also touches on the issue of how Irish immigrants were treated at that time. But the heart-stealer in this story is a young boy.

Jennifer's "A Malleable Heart" is chock full of unforgettable characters who will tug at your heart. Set in California in 1870, she leaves you with a taste of the Old West.

Worth Fighting For by Pegg Thomas
A cute historical romance! This story takes place before the Revolution actually began, and it didn’t go very in depth about the causes but it portrayed conflict among citizens well. Historical figures were included and the beginning of the desire to move West was touched upon. It made me giggle a few times, and was cute, but lacked some substance. 3.5/5 stars

Forging Forever by Amanda Barratt
Amanda Barratt is the queen of historical novellas! She is able to weave a beautiful story that lacks nothing a full length novel does (except I never want her stories to end!). This story brings readers to the Cornish coast, and is full of love, faith, and intrigue. I’ll never tire of reading her stories! 4.5/5

A Tempered Heart by Angela K. Couch
It’s rare to see mental illness prominently portrayed in inspirational historical fiction, and this story did it beautifully. Although it was a bit frustrating at times, this story showed the power of love and family. 4/5 stars

A Malleable Heart by Jennifer Uhlarik
I need a full-length novel of this story! It was amazing how much growth and plot Uhlarik was able to show in a novella, making the story absolutely wonderful. This is one of my new favorite novellas! A solid 5/5 stars

This was nice. Not a favorite or even one that will stick with me long. But it was enjoyable. The stories were different enough, not just the same formulaic novellas.

Very enjoyable novellas!
1) I loved "Worth Fighting For" by Pegg Thomas set in Philadelphia in 1774. The test for me with a novella is how quickly I can get into the story. Let me tell you, I liked it so much, I think the author could write a series based on this novella. I want to hear more about Alexander and Meg and Daniel Boone and their journey west over the mountains, and I'd love to hear more about Meg's family in Philadelphia and the upcoming war. I even made that suggestion to the publisher!

2) "Forging Forever" by Amanda Barratt takes place in Cornwall, England is a sweet tale of Elowyn and Josiah, an honorable and kind man who rescues her from an awful fate. Both face unresolved past hurts and learn to rely on God to help with forgiveness. The characters are well developed and I found myself rooting for them early on. In the author note at the end, I liked that she "hopes this journey has encouraged you as you dwell in the love of a heavenly Father who calls you His. Because you are His, you are worthy".

3) "A Tempered Heart" by Angela K. Couch takes place in Charlottesville, VA in 1861. Can wealthy Esther Matthews and her son Charlie cross social and cultural divides to find love and a life together with blacksmith Thomas Flynn? I think you need to read this satisfying story to find out! The people who understand what's important have a heart for Charlie and his physical limitations.

4) "A Malleable Heart" by Jennifer Uhlarik takes place in California in 1870 and is a very enjoyable read! I enjoyed meeting Leah, Mae, Hope, Ethan, Bo, and Jess. Bo keeps everyone at a distance, then Leah (who became ma and Pa to her siblings at a young age) gets under his skin. Sweet western romance with two people who had many hardships in their lives with a few more challenges to face.

The description "Hearts are forged by the flames of gentle love in 4 historical stories" is a perfect portrayal of this book. I enjoyed these four historical novellas, and I highly recommend them!

"Had she truly flirted with the blacksmith?" She'd never flirted with anyone before. Never wanted to, even if her brothers would have allowed it." - Worth Fighting For by Pegg Thomas

"She'd agreed to wed a stranger because he owned a cottage with a roof that didn't leak." - Forging Forever by Amanda Barratt

"A laborer doused with sweat? Or a man with the power to wield iron into something of worth? Able to be something of worth." - A Tempered Heart by Angela K. Couch

"Trust doesn't come easy for me. Anyone I've ever trusted has died . . . or turned on me." - A Malleable Heart by Jennifer Uhlarik

As you can see, these four notable novellas are filled with a wide range of emotions; their heroines certainly second guessing themselves more than once. Thankfully, laughter is good medicine when it comes to dealing with big, bold, strong, sweaty men who who handle tools of iron, but possess hearts of gold.

What a great collection!

Blacksmith Brides: 4 Love Stories Forged by Hard Work

I love reading Christian historical fiction and this book offers four wonderful stories by four gifted authors with their own unique writing styles. Set in varies locations between 1774-1870. Each story centers around a blacksmith and the women they meet. Their romance is not smooth by any means. They face challenges and prejudices that they must overcome, surprising twists and turns, forgiveness and faith. All are heartwarming stories.

Now, this is what a collection of novellas should look like! These were well written cohesive stories that had depth and felt complete rather than shallow and rushed. I enjoyed each of the stories and wished there were more when the book was finished.
Well done!

I really enjoyed each of these stories, they were all unique in their own way. Inspiring, romantic and beautifully written, these stories are about rugged blacksmiths and the women who capture their hearts. My grandfather was a Blacksmith as his father before him so these were special to me.

A charming collection of stories by some fantastic writers. Each story is very unique and fun to read. Each story focuses on a less than ideal but very necessary occupation in its day - blacksmithing and the hardworking men behind the forge. I enjoyed each of these charming stories.

Blacksmith Brides is anthology of four novellas revolving around blacksmiths from various times in history and the women with whom they fall in love. Authors Pegg Thomas, Amanda Barratt, Angela K. Couch, and Jennifer Uhlarik combine to bring us this wonderful collection of romantic stories.

While I love history and novellas, the concept of blacksmiths is what drew me to this book. I was curious how the authors would create the relationships around that particular profession. We can jump to the stereotype of muscled men swinging their hammer beside a glowing forge. However, that stereotype is accurate because that’s precisely what it takes to do what they do and the authors of Blacksmith Brides breathed freshness into it.

Over the hundred or so years covered in Blacksmith Brides, blacksmithing didn’t seem to change much. All four men were hard working, willing to bare the heat and dirt to craft beautiful and necessary items from common metal. But individually they saw the world very differently. Perhaps hardened because of their circumstances, or fiercely protective of the vulnerable, or wishing for a new life, to be more than just a blacksmith.

The women who fell in love with these men were all strong, capable women. Well matched to the blacksmiths’ strengths. They came from a variety of stations and responsibilities. But much rested on their shoulders. As they came to see the heart behind their blacksmith, each woman had to decide whether to accept a partner to share their load. But what was equally true is how each held a key to unlocking their blacksmith’s best self.

I admired how the authors did not shy away from difficult topics, even in such short stories. Abuse, slavery, and war were all common themes. Throughout the stories, the characters’ relationship – or lack of relationship – with God is woven in without being obnoxious. What struck me most, however, was how lasting the stories felt. After I finished reading each one, I found myself thinking about it long afterward.

On that note alone I would recommend reading these stories. But if you also love history, romance, and a fascinating profession, then definitely pick up a copy of Blacksmith Brides.

As a collective group, these stories were entertaining, and all of them proved to be quick reads. I appreciated the faith each of the characters in the stories demonstrated, and the way they do try to live to Christ's standard. But individually . . . they each had their strengths and the weaknesses, so how 'bout mini reviews of each book, hmm?

~ Worth Fighting For = 2 stars

This one was set in the times of the Revolutionary war, and as a whole, it was okay. One of those book that you read, and probably won't read again, but it was entertaining, ya know?

There wasn't much wrong with it . . . but there wasn't much that stood out, either. The protective brothers were a hoot, and I enjoyed Meg's escapades with the fish. I mean, that was pretty much hilarious, in a cheesy way. Alexander was about the most believable character, or the youngest brother.

All in all, the romance seemed really rushed and unbelievable. Nothing untoward or inappropriate, just on the sillier, more mushy romantical side of things.

~ Forging Forever = 3 stars

This one was definitely my second favourite in the book. In "Forging Forever", we see a young blacksmith who is a widow purchasing a young girl who's father has sold her. Yes, these things really happened in history, but I haven't read much about it.

Josiah was a sweetheart, a perfect gentleman all the way through. His impromptu purchase of young Elowyn, to save her from a guy who he knows is dangerous, was thoughtful, if a bit brash. Marrying her was perfect. And then reading about how he goes about winning her affection was sweet.

Elowyn was a stronger female character. I *thought* she'd be one of those weak, wishy-washy characters in the beginning, but she turned out all right. She learned NOT to keep secrets from her husband, and the reconciliation of the two was precious.

**There was a mildly detailed almost rape scene. Nothing happened, at all, but there is a description of a woman set upon by a man in a crude way. The woman escapes unscathed, but her clothes are a bit torn up. Also mentions adultery, in a very negative light.

~ A Tempered Heart = 2 stars

This was another of the stories that seemed really unbelievable, as far as romance was concerned. The rich young widower comes home to live in her fathers mansion in the beginning of the War between the States. Because of her son, who has an issue with his heart, she meets the blacksmith.

This haughty woman changes when her son, Charlie, watches Flynn, the blacksmith, who ends up showing him a bit about his trade. This rich young mother begins to fall in love with this tradesman watching him interact with Charlie -- and, I'll admit, the relationship between the two was absolutely sweet.

When Flynn is jailed, because of the debt he owes her father, she releases him from prison and pays off what he owed. And they get married and live happily ever after . . . not a very believable ending for a self respecting young man, but okay.

**There were several mildly detailed kisses in this one.

~ A Malleable Heart = 4 stars

This one was by far my favourite of the four stories in this collection. Leah Guthrie is a strong young lady, who I figured for one of those strong, feminist types . . . but I was wrong. She *is* strong and independent, because she has become father and mother to her orphaned siblings. She tries her best to keep food on the table, while caring for her crippled sister, her wayward brother, and her younger sister.

The blacksmith is a burly and gruff fellow, who has been lied to his whole life. After his initial encounter with Leah, and the trade he strikes with her, he thinks that's all he's going o do with her. Then he ends up on her doorstep, brother in tow, after he captured the boy breaking the windows in his smithy.

He decides to step in and help Leah with this brother, and ends up teaching him smithing, helping him make braces for his crippled sister and falling in love with his oldest sister along the way.

They have twists and turns that they must face, but they work together to overcome them, and get to know the best and worst sides of each other . . . until the feelings they have are more than mere infatuation.

Definitely a favourite of the stories.

I am thankful to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me a copy of this book to read.

Worth Fighting For, by Peg Thomas is a true inspiring story of family, protecting your land and being free. Meg and her brothers along with their parents fought hard to survive in the new colony of Philadelphia. Meg meets up with Alexander, whose family struggles with the same issues as Megs. Alexander and Meg Romance blooms in all this madness that happens around them. This story was very informative, with true details of how things where back then. The book was easy to read. The story didn’t seem dry at all. The story was told like a casual conversation. To keep the book going, supplying the facts in a way to keeps the readers interest helped this book.
Forging Forever, by Amanda Barratt is a story that tells the truth of how families suffered during hard times in the western world. Amanda tells this story of Charles and Elowyn. Their love grows as both try to cope with having luxuries given to them when both came from having nothing. Elowyn has to cope with the shame of her father auctioning her for money. Charles had to sale some of his land to a deceitful man to keep him from trying to buy Elowyn at the auction.
A Tempered Heart, by Angela Couch is a true romantic story. Angela, writing pulled the reader in the romance between Thomas Flynn
The story is written like a care and kindness. The details and visualization between scenes played out in your mind as read through the story. The storyline and plot is perfect for the telling of the story of this romance.
Malleable Heart, by Jennifer Uhlarik is a sweet love story. Leah and Bowdrie seems like a spit fire couple whose romance blossoms with entertainment at every turn. The story is soft and written with care. The reader will definitely get caught up in the story of survival. Their faith in God gets them through the hard troubles that they faces.
A Tempered Heart, by Angela Couch is a true romantic story. Angela, writing pulled the reader in the romance between Thomas Flynn I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.

The Blacksmith Brides is a compilation of 4 historical fictions stories. All focus on a blacksmith, his background and those he helps.

Forging Forever by Amanda Barratt takes place in 1798 in Cornwall, England. Elowyn's father has her auctioned off. Josiah is determined to not let her be sold to someone who will not treat her nice and sells a deed to a mine he treasures to have money to purchase her.

A Malleable Heart by Jennifer Uhlarik takes place in 1870 in California. Bo lost his parent when he was very young. He was cared for by an abusive man who left him with scars. He is a blacksmith that has a reputation. Leah also lost both her parents and she is now trying to keep her family together. Circumstances put them together where she does not tolerate his rude behavior.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a great historical Christian book to read. Each of the stories shows how a person's past can affect how they move forward with their lives. Each of the stories give a good message of forgiveness and faith. The stories are each the perfect length to read in an evening. The authors are fairly new to me but each of them writes a story that just draws the reader in.

The Blacksmith Brides
What a wonderful collection. I enjoy novellas that leaving me wishing to find know what the happily-ever-after looks like after the end. Each story in this collection will warm your heart. The historical settings are well-written. Each blacksmiths has a unique personality. The heroines are the perfect complement to each hero. The stories are present in timeline order.
Worth Fighting For is set in 1774 Philadelphia. Pegg Thomas created layered characters and a story idea I did not expect in this time and place. I love her work.
Forging Forever took me across the pond to Cornwall, England in 1798 Amanda Barratt created such an interesting story. The characters grabbed my heart and the circumstances were made more believable because of Amanda’s tight writing and excellent research. This story certainly had a wow factor.
A Tempered Heart is set in Charlottesville, North Caroline in 1861 just as the Civil War is beginning. Angela K. Couch’s Irish immigrant blacksmith and Northern Aristocrat widow seemed unlikely love match. Throw in a child with Down’s Syndrome and you have a romance that pricks your heart in so many ways. I love the way this story unfolded and came to a wonderful satisfying conclusion.
A Malleable Heart is set in Elverton, California in 1870. Jennifer Uhlarik never disappoints, and this story is no exception. I loved the flawed characters and the redemption elements that draw Bo Allen and Leah together. Jennifer always makes me feel I am right there in the story. Love her writing.

It takes a truly gifted writer to create a compelling romance that goes full circle in the word count constrains of a novella. Theses authors are that gifted. This collection will not disappoint those who love historical romance.

A great collection based on the very necessary, but not always lucrative job of blacksmith. They all have an underlining message of understanding.

Worth Fighting For – Pegg Thomas
A good alternate title could have been “Pick your Battles”. Set just before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, the battle lines have been drawn and a side must be chosen. Alexander chose a 3rd path and picked an almost impossible choice for a wife. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I sincerely hope we might get to learn more about the fate of Meg’s brothers.
Forging Forever -Amanda Barratt
An unbelievably cruel father, a greedy villain and a hero who gives more than could be expected, this story compels you to keep reading hoping for a happy ending. Josiah pays an unbelievably high price for Elowyn, a young woman he does not know. Amanda Barratt, thank you for this story.
Tempered Heart – Angela K. Couch
Angela K. Couch gives new meaning to the power of love, the love between a big strong blacksmith and a young mentally and physically challenged boy. Add in a mother’s love for that boy and you have the basis for this story. I enjoyed this story.
Malleable Heart – Jennifer Uhlarik
It would be nice if we could make ourselves feel good to think it was only in the1800’s that those that were different were outcasts and talked about, but we know that isn’t true. Jennifer Uhlarik gives us interesting characters and situations that while set in the past could also be set today. She shows the importance of treating everyone with respect. This is a good addition to this collection.

What a lovely way to spend a few hours! This wonderful collection by four well-known authors was very educational to read. I certainly never knew much about the job of a blacksmith, obviously imagining they did more than make horse shoes, but never realizing how important this work was to the town.

Worth Fighting For by Pegg Thomas
Philadelphia 1774 found the blacksmith in high demand as soldiers’ kits were becoming more and more important. The threat of war was no longer a threat. Did this mean that dreams and plans were no longer important?

Forging Forever by Amanda Barratt
Cornwall, England 1798
It’s not a question of your worthinesss or unworthiness - none of us are truly deserving, yet the Lord grants us mercy - Josiah. Make it count was the motto he received from his mentor. After receiving an expected inheritance, this young blacksmith sets out to change the life of at least one person. Would she find herself worthy?

A Tempered Heart by Angela K. Couch
Charlottesville, Virginia 1861
Thomas Flynn learned his trade from a hard taskmaster. In spite of being expected to repay all the many debts of his dead master, Thomas is a gentle soul who goes out of his way to help the grandson of his new master. Debtor’s prison was a horrible place to be - would the choices of his former master follow him the rest of his life?

A Malleable Heart by Jennifer Uhlarik
Elverton, California 1870
Anyone I’ve ever trusted has died..or turned on me - Bo
Bo Allen has had a very tough life, one that has left him gruff and basically unfriendly. He is, however, the only blacksmith in town. Is it possible that he can learn to believe that not everyone has it out for him - that people truly want to get to know him better and be his friend?

This superb compilation of books was received through NetGalley and Barbour Publishing. The impressions and comments are my own and were in no way solicited.

This is another fairly solid anthology from Barbour Publishing. I love that, while they all feature blacksmith heroes, the settings run the gamut from the Revolutionary War to Victorian England to the Civil War to the Western US in the 1870s.
The last story, “A Malleable Heart” by Jennifer Uhlarik, is the most charming, with family at its core as well as romance, with Leah being a parental figure for her younger siblings, while connecting with the reclusive Bo. I also loved “Forgiving Forever” by Amanda Barratt, set in Cornwall, and I enjoyed seeing the Josiah and Elowyn come together and help each other heal. The greatest strength of Pegg Thomas’s “Forging Forever” was its historical detail, including featuring real historical figures, and the way the romance blossoms in the midst of the larger conflict.
I found “A Tempered Heart” by Angela K. Couch a bit questionable, given that the conflict between characters rested on their beliefs concerning slavery, an issue with points as described that may be historically accurate, but I don’t like the idea of a hero who’s not 100% against it in a book published in this day and age.

If you're looking for an engrossing read that gives you the chance to sample different author styles, "The Blacksmith Brides" collection is for you! Each story is written by a talented author, interwoven with a message of hope as well as some insight into life centuries before.

"Worth Fighting For" and "A Tempered Heart" were two standouts to me, but honestly, all the stories are amazing. I love the chance to read a collection like this when time is short, as I feel like I won't miss out if I have to take a break.

Great world building, powerful themes of grace and hope for restoration are found in "The Blacksmith Brides" collection. I think this book would be a wonderful gift for any reader, as they're bound to find at least one story they connect with.

I was an early reader, thanks to Barbour Books Publishing. All opinions are my own.

I really can't say enough about this format/style of books by Barbour publishing. Whether it's blacksmiths, Regency England or the Oregon Trail - each and every one is the perfect read!!

The novellas are the right size of a complete nightly read or when you have a lot of starts & stops but really want to keep reading. I enjoyed all the novellas in this book. I actually find myself wising each one was a entire book by itself - these stories are exceptional.

I gave a 5 star review because I could read this book again & it would probably be fresh once more.

I did receive an electronic ARC.

Blacksmith Brides, a new novella collection from Barbour, is an exciting new set of 4 stories set in the 17 and 1800s about 4 Smithy's and their new brides. Each one is full of surprises, suspense, and loves worth taking the time to read!

I particularly enjoyed Forging Forever by Amanda Barratt. It is the tender story of emotionally wounded yet kind Elowyn and her groom Josiah who pays a high price to rescue her. Elowyn begins to slowly understand how much she is valued not only by Josiah but more so by the Lord because of his great love for her.

For those who enjoy romantic historical fiction novellas, these should suit memorably. I am grateful to Barbour and NetGalley for furnishing me with an ARC for this my honest review.

I loved this book! I love anthologies and series of books. These stories were so well written and provided the reader with such an historical view. The characters were down to earth and each one touches you as you read their stories. There is Alexander, a blacksmith, who wants to move to the mountains and make his own way. He meets Meg whose father and brothers are going to war. It is troubling times, but sometimes trouble brings people together. Then there is Elowyn who is forced to marry Josiah. Can they find happiness out of heartache or are some aches too big to heal? There is Flynn with his run-down shop and heavy debt. He meets Esther, a widow, and her son, Charlie, who has asthma. Can Charlie bring Flynn and Esther closer together? And Lastly there is Bowdrie, a grouchy, hard-hearted, ornery cuss of a man, that is until he meets Leah. This book will make you laugh, cry and even get a little upset. I would definitely recommend it.
