These are the stories that catapulted Superman into the spotlight as one of the world's premier heroes of fiction. These volumes feature his earliest adventures, when the full extent of his powers was still developing and his foes were often bank robbers and crooked politicians.
Jerome "Jerry" Siegel, who also used pseudonyms including Joe Carter, Jerry Ess, and Herbert S. Fine, was the American co-creator of Superman (along with Joe Shuster), the first of the great comic book superheroes and one of the most recognizable icons of the 20th century. He and Shuster were inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1993.
These are some classic wartime Superman stories. There are some cheesy tales but some good ones as well. We see Superman fighting a superpowered Luthor, Superman's first costumed villain (the Snake) and even the first appearance of Batman (as Bruce Wayne) in a Superman story.
The writing on these Superman stories shows improvement over the previous volume, which is to say that about half are somewhere between very good and dopey but fun, with the other half being some kind of bad. Two and a half stars, I guess, but GoodReads does not offer that option.
This was beautiful to look at! The vintage classic comics were amazing and very very fascinating to read. The smell of the book too though...mmmmm mate.
