Windows 11 is getting a native profile picture editor
Microsoft is working on integrating a new profile picture editor in its Windows 11 operating system. This editor helps users change and edit the profile icon of a user account.
The feature was introduced in Windows 11 build 26231, but it is disabled by default. Interested testers may enable it with the help of the ViVeTool.
Here, they need to run the command vivetool /enable /id:45189370,47364920 to enable the functionality.
Once done, the new option becomes available under Settings > Your Info.
A click on "change profile photo" opens the editor. Users have the following options there:
- Take a photo using built-in cameras.
- Select an image from the local system.
- Remove a photo.
- Apply effects (blur background, portrait lighting, upscale resolution)
- Filters (apply filters).
- Apply Zoom.
- Rotate the image.
Our colleagues over at Deskmodder have enabled the functionality and revealed the names of the filters: Style1977, Nashville, Sutro, Walden, Xpro2 und AutoFocus. Not much to go by
The selected image is synced with the Microsoft account, if a Microsoft account is used. The functionality is also available for local accounts. It is unclear if images are uploaded for processing, or if the processing happens on the local device.
Microsoft refers to the feature as AIProfileImage. This indicates that some features, likely effects and filters, are applied using artificial intelligence. Microsoft makes no mention of this in the current dialog though.
Currently, users may go to Settings > Accounts > Your info to change the profile icon. The only provided options are to take a photo or to select an image from the local system.
The new feature adds editing options to the process, which require the use of third-party apps right now.
Closing Words
The new profile photo editor improves adding and changing the profile icon on Windows 11 devices. The editing options are the main improvements, as it may no longer be necessary to use a third-party app to apply effects or rotate the image.
All in all, it appears to be a useful change for the majority of Windows users.

You know that there are “grandmas” today that were in their 20’s when Windows 95 came out, right? Also, perhaps you’re also sexist on top of ageist – does your grandpa have higher skill levels?
@45 RPM, to modify an old yet crafty comment once made by pewdiepie, “wamen are not computers”. Statistics are statistics, no amount of “”inclusion”” is gonna make it 50/50. Yeah your grandma is likely to know less than your grandpa, the stereotype exists for a reason.
Ageism and sexism have nothing to do with anything, I came out of schooling some years ago (not even a decade ago) and we had no female students in our computing science class. You’ll get exceptions, but on a base level, this whole category of “computers & how they work” appeals more to men than to women.
One of our ICT teachers was a woman, and she was really good at her job, made the subject interesting, got us to think, so exceptions exist, but even she would agree with my above statement, seeing how she did the subject for decades and probably encountered enough female students to count on 2 hands – is it because of the toxic atmosphere, because the IDE wasn’t a rosy pink theme? Get real dude…
M$ should kick-start development of ROOTKIT REVEALER, a powerful tool which detected the SONY BMG ROOTKIT. (and don’t tell me blah blah they have Defender)
At the time when this tool could scan and find that rootkit, NO OTHER ANTIVIRUS OR OTHER SCANNER COULD DETECT IT. Eventually under pressure the various companies eventually added detection for this rootkit.
Once M$ bought this out, they dropped development AFAIK, and right now it’s rotting with no 64bit support or efforts to revive. What a shame! It remains available from M$ for download, but why let it rot?
OPEN SOURCE IT ON GITHUB if you’re not going to do anything further with it. But no, give us another useless toy. Take more ideas and software (cough cough chromium) from Google. Always play follow the leader and FUCK THE CUSTOMER.

Excessive terms to describe an environment does not alter the fact the environment may be hostile. I believe the digital one is. A modern Windows OS out-of-the-box is definitely not fit to respect privacy and includes several features which may be meant for easiness while be part of the OSs arsenal to better track the user. Microsoft does track, by all means, increasingly, mainly but who knows if for only advertisement purposes. I don’t think a user’s defense capacities are tied to his age, I believe it’s more related to his skills and motivations, and skills come with experience, motivations with lucidity.
When you realize how complex OSs are becoming, how easiness is meant to remove complications from complexity yet inherently lead to hidden processes, a user’s alternative is either to accept as it is, refuse as it is, or try to differentiate the good from the bad ; first two are the easy way to go, latter is the hard way, but the right way, but, again, requires skills and motivations. Most of us have other things to do, are not technically inclined and shouldn’t have to spend hours to find the settings, options, tweaks, dedicated apps and software to simply bring an OS to a level of decency. Microsoft and others, GAFAM but not only, are NOT decent. Even an increasing number of Web sites are NOT decent when you realize all the crappy code they include, connecting to unnecessary 3rd-party domains, filling a user’s local data with cookies, localstorage EVEN when absolutely NOT necessary. To sum it up : this whole world is becoming indecent. Remain fortunately some brave hearts who struggle for the best, and those alone prevent me from becoming totally misanthropist.
