TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMIT (TRP)

Students coming from countries outside of the European Union need a temporary residence permit (TRP) to enter the Republic of Slovenia. Candidates can apply for this at the competent embassy of the Republic of Slovenia abroad. For the temporary residence permit, you need to submit:
Proof of enrolment – provided by the Faculty of Tourism upon enrolment,
copy of the passport,
valid health insurance,
police clearance certificate,
bank statement showing sufficient funds in the account,
lease agreement.

The process of obtaining a temporary residence permit usually takes up to six months.

STUDENTS WORK OPPORTUNITIES

In Slovenia students can work through an instrument called "Student Work". This allows temporary and part-time work for college and university students. They can work via a special type of contract called referral forms/referrals, which can be obtained from employment agencies specialised for student work. Agencies, called Student Services, offer lists of available student jobs and take care of payments. There are many different agencies around Slovenia.

EATING OUT

One of the rights that go with student status is the entitlement to subsidized student meals. What are called student coupons can be used in most restaurants in Slovenia. To be able to use these subsidies, you have to identify yourself using an app on your mobile phone or with a special card. For more information about subsidized student meals and locations of restaurants, please visit:

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

We take care of varied extracurricular activities – each new academic year begins with the Welcome / Orientation Days, which are dedicated initially to freshmen. An obligatory part of each academic year is the Fresher's Party (Brucovanje), where first year students are welcomed into student life. The party of the year is without doubt the one held at Turizmijada – an international congress of students of tourism and hotel industry in Budva, Montenegro.
Twice a year, we get the entire Faculty together (Brežice students & Ljubljana students and all the FT staff) for a Mix & Mingle event where we play games, do a trivia quiz, and eat pizza. Your presence there is all but mandatory!

DO YOU NEED HELP?

We are here for you. At the faculty, we are ready to help both employees and students. Because the faculty is smaller, almost all of us know each other practically by name, we bet on good interpersonal relationships and we believe that no obstacle is insurmountable.
Students, representatives in the Student Council of the Faculty and a Vice-dean for Students Affairs, come to your aid, when, necessary, also intervenes in possible problems with the management and professors. We have a well-organized tutoring system, it consists of student tutors/student buddy and teacher /personal tutor also for international students who are always ready to help.

LEARNING SLOVENIAN

Živijo! Slovenian is a South Slavic language. It is characterised by the grammatical dual and many declensions. Moreover, despite the fact that it has only 2 million speakers there are around 50 dialects (which is to say that “Every village has its own voice”, as the proverb goes). To get started with your Slovenian, you can try free online course at slonline.si to get the basic knowledge of listening, reading and writing.

International students enrolling in part-time study programmes in English

In the 2018/19 academic year, we welcomed the first generation of students enrolling in our English-language study programmes, with lectures held at our branch on the Ljubljana Campus. Students in the part-time study programme in English have the same rights as full-time students in Slovenia.

More about studying in the undergraduate study programme (Contemporary Tourism Practices) and the postgraduate master’s programme (Tourism Destinations and Experiences) in English can be found here.

International students enrolling in full-time study programmes in Slovenian

Students from countries whose language is close to Slovenian often decide to pursue full-time studies in Slovenian.

Many Croatian students enrol at the Faculty of Tourism due to its proximity to the border, as well as the fact that Croatian citizens may pursue full-time higher education, university, or master’s studies in Slovenia under the same conditions as Slovenian citizens, i.e. free of charge. The enrolment procedure and the deadlines are the same as for Slovenian citizens; the completed application is submitted via the eVŠ portal.

The Faculty is also happy to welcome students from other neighboring countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Macedonia. Enrolment instructions for non-EU students are available at:

Students who have previously studied at institutions abroad and wish to continue their education at the University of Maribor, must obtain a decision on the recognition of foreign education for continuing education at UM. They can do this by completing and submitting the electronic study application form via the eVŠ.

For additional information about the process of recognition of foreign education, candidates are advised to contact the authorised person at the University of Maribor during office hours, Monday to Friday: 9:00 a.m.−11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.−2:00 p.m, by phone: +386 (2) 23 55 263, or e-mail: recognition@um.si.

Before enrolling in the second-year of the study programme, students from other EU Member States and from other countries who are enrolled in full-time study programmes at FT UM, are required to submit a certificate demonstrating that they have attended a Slovenian language course of at least 30 hours. The adequacy of the completed course is confirmed by the FT UM Academic Affairs Committee.
