Bitcoin Miner Goes All-in on Fortinet Networking and Security

GRIID Infrastructure is a purpose-built bitcoin-mining company. A key issue for the company is how best to operate and secure its 5,000 mining devices, which are spread across a few locations. Key challenges include ensuring the integrity of its power management process, diagnosing operational issues, and protecting the miners from malware or DoS (denial-of-service) attacks.
Two years ago, GRIID consolidated its networking and security systems for its miners onto the Fortinet Security Fabric. GRIID deployed a high-availability pair of FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) at the perimeter of each mining site, with dual power supplies. Fortinet Secure SD-WAN connects the GRIID sites with one another and with the internet. Each site has a core FortiSwitch secure Ethernet switch, which connects to a large number of downstream FortiSwitch devices. The company also rolled out intrusion prevention system (IPS), antivirus, application control, SSL inspection, and web filtering FortiGuard AI-Powered Security Services, with enhanced endpoint protection enabled through the FortiClient Fabric Agent. As a result, GRIID has in place a highly resilient network that delivers more uptime for bitcoin mining.
