As of late, not many other shows have had a chance to top the Netflix charts. On top of Shadow and Bone manhandling the Top 10 list for 12 straight days (a record in 2021, by the way), The Circle and The Baker and the Beauty have been busy controlling the streaming service as well. In fact, dating back to April 17, no other show besides thsoe three on Netflix has been able to capture the #1 spot on the daily Top 10 charts.
That is until today. At the top of the rankings this morning was the biographical documentary The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness, making it the fourth true crime mini-series in 2021 to stand in first place.
If the past has taught us anything, then The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness will continue to hold onto that #1 position for a few more days. While the true crime series will have to hold off newcomers like Jupiter’s Legacy, Girl from Nowhere and Mine this weekend, all three of the other true crime programs that have dominated Netflix this year spent at least four days atop the Top 10 charts—with two of those series (Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer and Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel) capturing at least seven straight days in first place.
All three of those true crime documentaries sit high on the 2021 popularity rankings as well (I publish those rankings weekly, by the way). While This is a Robbery: The World's Biggest Art Heist has fallen to the 26th place position, Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel currently sits pretty in 17th place while Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer owns 15th place.
The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness is the first documentary to top the Netflix’s Top 10 charts for shows since This is a Robbery: The World's Biggest Art Heist did so back on April 13. Since then, only four other shows have captured the #1 position.
The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness is a true crime documentary about the “Son of Sam” case, which grew into a lifelong obsession for journalist Maury Terry, who became convinced that the murders were linked to a satanic cult.
