When Silicon Valley-based companies like Shopify and Airbnb want to offset their carbon emissions, they go to Pachama. The startup uses satellites, remote sensors and AI to measure and monitor the carbon stored in rainforests and ecosystems around the world to assess which restoration projects can suck up the most carbon and thus have the greatest impact. Corporations then purchase carbon credits from Pachama. Cofounders Diego Saez Gil and Tomas Aftalion, who grew up in the forests of Argentina, have led their startup to a valuation of $365 million, according to PitchBook.
