Howard H. Baker, Jr. United States Courthouse, Market Street, Knoxville, TN

Built in 1991, this Colonial Revival and Postmodern-style building was built as the headquarters of Whittle Communications, but was sold to the Federal Government to serve as a Federal Courthouse and Federal Office Building in 1995. The building frames a large central courtyard, with a red brick exterior, tiered Colonial Revival-style tower, pilasters and columns with classical capitals, six-over-six, six-over-nine, eight-over-eight, arched, oxeye, and palladian windows, an open air breezeway between the courtyard and Cumberland Avenue, which allows for a pedestrian connection on the former right-of-way of Market Street, cupolas on the building’s south wing, a domed rotunda with curtain walls and pilasters at the courtyard, and decorative trim work. The building presently houses Federal Courts and Federal Offices for Eastern Tennessee, which have relocated from their previous home in the nearby United States Post Office and Federal Courthouse building.
