Most of the Windward Islands in the Caribbean, which includes Grenada, have volcanic origins. Hard to believe with the lush and vibrant vegetation that presently covers the island.

Grand Etang Lake and National Park is one of the most popular locations for hiking. There are several waterfalls and hot springs in this rain forest location.

Levera National Park is in a coastal area with wonderful beaches, and lagoon there is a great area for wildlife habitats. Lake Antoine National Park is a great place for bird watchers. Snail Kite, the Fulvous Whistling Duck, large-billed Seed Finch, Gray Kingbird, and Limpkin are some of the birds spotted. Another great bird watching area for bird watching is La Sagesse. Some of the bird species you can spot here are the Brown Crested Flycatcher, Caribbean Coot, Green Backed Heron, Little Blue Heron, and the Northern Jacuna.

Many mangrove habitats border the East side of the Island. These are great places for fish spawning and bird nesting. The mangroves are being protected by the Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries. Off the coast Coral Reefs are part of the ecosystem off the southern part of the island, where there are dive shops and other activities to enjoy the coral and fish life. The government has put restrictions on fishing and limits on other species. A system of buoys surrounds this area to keep boats from throwing out anchors and destroying the fragile reef.
