The Butterfly Club: a group of tropical resorts who have successfully completed the eco rating exam

Eco Rating for Hotels, Lodges, and Inns

The Eco Rating was established by Eco Tropical Resorts. The Rating is for green hotels interested in assessing and improving their sustainability policies and practices. It is an Online Eco Rating for Hotels, Lodges, and Inns, and other lodging.

Many ecotourism activities were documented in 2007 by members. At the time they were using an Eco Questionnaire, developed with Jem Winston from Rosalie Forest Eco Lodge/3 Rivers Dominica and Lise Tyrrell.  Eventually resort operators urged us to further develop it to incorporate a rating system indicating “degrees of green.”

During 2008, we developed an Eco Rating for resorts to self assess and rate their policies and practices. Hotels were rated on energy, water, recycling/waste, land and nature conservation, and community.  Each of these areas have equal weight. This Rating lets lodge owners/managers self rate resorts from 1 to 5 butterflies (with 5 being the highest).

The Eco Rating exam was changed a little in 2014 so that it could be filled in online and generate a score.  The online Eco Rating  is a work in progress and will be updated to reflect feedback we get and changing times. In other words, we hope to keep making it current and helpful to visitors and hotels.

All hotels taking the Online Eco Rating have to send in Policies and Procedures. They also have to send in how they measure their consumption. In this way, you know they are not “Greenwashing”. Greenwashing refers to giving false or misleading information in order to appear more environmentally sound.

Therefore we have personally seen these documents and take the Online Eco Rating very seriously. We back our eco lodges!
