You may have to wait a lot longer for the OnePlus Open 2

The OnePlus Open was released last year and received very positive reviews. However, according to a tipster named @That_Kartikey on X (formerly Twitter), its successor won’t be released this year. According to the poster, Oppo does not plan to release a new Find N in 2024. Therefore, we shouldn’t expect a next-generation OnePlus Open this year, either.

This news was confirmed by reliable tech rumor source @chunvn8888, who said the release of both handsets is expected in 2025. The devices will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, which is unlikely to be available for device manufacturers until early next year.

In 2023, OnePlus and Oppo released the OnePlus Open and Oppo Find N3. These book-style foldable devices were the same, with the former being the international version and the other made for the Chinese market.

It’s worth mentioning that there is no definite way to verify this news. And considering that the OnePlus Open was initially released in October last year, there is still ample time for both the OnePlus Open 2 and Oppo Find N5 to be launched before 2025.

In our original review of the OnePlus Open, we mentioned that the device’s hinge was not firm enough and the camera bump was slightly too large. We also expressed doubts about the quality of the macro and 120X Super Res cameras. It is possible that OnePlus will work on improving all three aspects in the next version of the device over the coming months. Despite these concerns, the OnePlus Open remains one of the best foldable phones on the market.

In the meantime, we are still awaiting the debut of another foldable phone. The Google Pixel Fold 2 may be announced this week at Google I/O, or Google may decide to wait and release it later in the year. We’re also expecting Samsung to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 this summer.

There are plenty of foldables to look forward to, but if it’s the OnePlus Open 2 that’s at the top of your wish list, it sounds like you could be waiting a lot longer than you may have thought.

5 phones you should buy instead of the Google Pixel 8a
The Google Pixel 8a's screen.

Everyone loves a bargain, and it's hard to argue that the Google Pixel 8a is anything but. With a flagship processor and one of the best phone cameras around, the $499 smartphone has the specs to make it a steal. But Google hasn't just crammed great hardware into the phone, as it also has one of the cleanest implementations of Android 14, all of Google's current AI roster, and an incredible seven years of software updates to boot. It's a cheap phone that can go the distance, and one we are more than happy to recommend.

But it's not perfect. The battery is a little weak, as is its charging ability — and the less said about the cheap-feeling plastic body, the better. So even though it's a strong phone, there are a number of alternatives that could pull your eyes away from Google's latest midrange phone.

The OnePlus 13 just got exciting
A person holding the OnePlus 12.

Four months after its release, the OnePlus 12 remains one of the best smartphones you can buy in 2024. It looks great, offers incredible specifications, and has an excellent price. One of the first OnePlus 13 leaks was just shared online, and if it’s true, it could make one of this year’s best phones even better … with a catch.

According to leaker Digital Chat Station, the OnePlus 13 will feature two big upgrades over the OnePlus 12. The first is its screen. Unlike the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R, which both have curved displays, the OnePlus 13 will reportedly have a “straight screen.” The translation from the Chinese post on Weibo to English isn’t perfect, but it certainly sounds like the OnePlus 13 is ditching the curved screen of its predecessor in favor of a flat one.

I tried the new OnePlus 12 in white. It’s the Elvis Presley of Android phones
OnePlus 12 Glacial White held in hand against a marble surface.

We're long past the days when phones were distinguished solely based on their design. Despite more modern form factors such as foldables, the contemporary slab phone design reigns supreme -- because why reinvent the wheel when the current one gives you perfect traction on all roads? That said, phone brands have never stopped imagining newer design tweaks to help phones stand out, and a phone's color is a primary focus of attention.

Within the limited dimensions of the back panel, smartphone brands have persistently iterated different color choices, combinations, and textures over the past few years. We have seen trends such as textures under glass, gradients, vegan leather, and more. But OnePlus is taking a rather simple step of launching a new white color variant of the OnePlus 12. The Glacial White OnePlus 12 has been available in China since the phone was originally launched last December and is now moving out of the mainland as a limited edition.
