The Apple Watch SE 2 makes Apple’s cheap smartwatch better than ever

Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch SE 2 at its “Far Out” event in Cupertino, California. The company revealed the new watch alongside the Apple Watch Series 8.

The Apple Watch SE 2 is packed with the same features as the Series 8 that make it the perfect first Apple Watch for more than 80% of users on a budget. It comes with the latest WatchOS 9 and a new S8 processor, which works 20% faster than the previous SE.

It tracks your workouts and activity, and it’s waterproof for up to 50 meters in depth when swimming. It also has the ability to detect falls, notify you of high and low heart rates, and it lets you call 911 with emergency SOS. To keep users even safer, the Apple Watch SE 2 is programmed with the same motion sensors for crash detection as the Series 8, regardless of the severity of the crash — all shown on a display that is 30% larger than that of the Series 3.

For families, the Apple Watch SE 2 comes with Family Setup, which allows people to set up and manage the Apple Watch for kids who don’t have their own iPhones yet, such as tracking their location and allowing them to contact people they prefer through call or text messaging. It will have more features coming soon that will give kids more independence and their parents some peace of mind.

The Apple Watch SE 2 costs $249 for GPS and $299 for both GPS and cellular versions. You can pre-order it now, and it will be available on September 16.

Nomad’s new iPhone case and Apple Watch band may be its coolest yet
Nomad Glow 2.0 Sport Case and Apple Watch Sport Band in daylight.

Though the world of Apple accessories is a dime a dozen, one of the better brands that you can buy is Nomad. Nomad has a variety of amazing leather Apple Watch bands and cases, as well as non-leather options, too. In August 2023, Nomad released a one-of-a-kind Glow in the Dark Apple Watch band that sold out in about 12 hours.

Since that Glow in the Dark band was a limited edition, no one was sure if Nomad was going to re-release it, and this explains the high resale prices you’ll find on eBay. But Nomad just released the Glow 2.0 Apple Watch Sport Band as well as a new Glow 2.0 Sport Case for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. And, yes, they're just as wonderful as before.

The OnePlus Watch 2 is the Wear OS smartwatch I’ve been waiting for

The OnePlus Watch 2 -- the company's first Wear OS watch -- has entered a market that Samsung dominates. However, OnePlus' popularity as a smartphone brand can be expected to bring small, yet meaningful changes that benefit not only OnePlus users, but all of the Wear OS segment in general.

For almost a decade, Samsung and Apple have predominantly been the default options if you want a smartwatch that is actually useful and goes beyond flashy features. With Samsung shifting gears and migrating from its own Tizen OS to the (relatively) more universal Wear OS platform and Google releasing its own Pixel Watch after struggling with an identity crisis in the smartwatch world, the platform has much more traction than it did a few years ago. As OnePlus carves its way into the segment, it has the opportunity to entice people who don't wish to live within Samsung's limitations when using a Galaxy Watch with another brand's phone.

Not only are there a lot of smartwatches and fitness bands to choose from these days, but the Apple Watch range itself is surprisingly extensive — especially considering it began life with only a single model available. Simply put, it remains the best smartwatch to get if you own an iPhone.
