Apple Wallet update is close to replacing your wallet with iOS 15

Apple Wallet’s getting improved in such a substantial way, so much so that it’s getting very close to replacing your actual wallet. During its WWDC 2021 event, Apple announced the biggest updates to Wallet for deeper integrations throughout all aspects of our lives.

The digital wallet is very close to reality with the upcoming update of Apple Wallet with the release of iOS 15. Apple Pay has always been a strong feature of the Wallet app, but it goes beyond just paying for goods and services.

First of all, you’ll soon have the ability to use your iPhone to unlock smart locks at home. This may not be a novel idea, as smart locks have always provided users hands-free experiences for locking and unlocking. However, iOS 15 will provide iPhone owners the ability to simply use Apple Wallet to access smart locks — all conveniently in one place, instead of having to rely on a third-party app.

Secondly, Apple Wallet will act as your digital key for accessing hotel rooms and your car. With this integration, it means one less thing you need to carry along with you — or worse yet, lose or misplace. Even though other implementations have been around to achieve this, its integration with the Wallet app should make for a more simplified, straightforward process.

And lastly, you’ll soon be able to add your government-issued identification card to the Wallet app, but it’ll vary from state to state. This is without a doubt the biggest, most ambitious feature to come to Apple Wallet since the availability of Apple Pay. Just think of it, your driver’s license can be stored in your iPhone. All of these new features with Apple Wallet in iOS 15 means that your iPhone will be more connected to your daily life than ever before.

It’s all exciting news coming out of WWDC 2021, but Apple Wallet’s going to become more crucial than ever before. If you’re worried about losing your iPhone and having your information stolen, identity cards stored in Wallet are encrypted in the Secure Element, which is the same exact hardware technology used by Apple Pay to make it private and secure. It’s a long time coming, but there may be a day when the only wallet you need to carry on you is just an iPhone. We’re getting close to that reality.

Apple’s AI features for the iPhone just hit a major roadblock
Summarization of notification and emails on iPhone with Apple Intelligence.

Earlier this week, the EU’s competition chief, Margrethe Vestager, told CNBC that Apple had some “very serious” issues as it tries to comply with the landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA) tech legislation. These were the rules that finally forced Apple to open iPhones for alternative app stores, allow external browser engines, and enable third-party payment options, among other things. It seems those rules also mean the best of iOS 18 won’t make it to the EU bloc either.

Apple has confirmed that a trio of crucial iPhone upgrades that it announced at WWDC 2024 earlier this month won't appear on iPhones in the EU later this year. The biggest of those would be Apple Intelligence, the suite of AI features deeply integrated within iOS 18 that are aimed at redefining what iPhones can do in the age of generative AI tools like Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot.

I have a mysterious problem with my iPhone 15 Pro Max
iPhone 15 Pro Max laying outside in a park.

There’s an issue with the iPhone I’d like Apple to fix, but I’m not quite sure what it will take to do so. I don't know if it’s a hardware or a software problem or even if I’ll always notice it if the issue has gone away.

It’s the battery life, but not necessarily the length of time the battery lasts on a charge. It’s more about battery life consistency, which is currently (and has been for some time) all over the place.
What’s the issue?

5 iOS 18 features I can’t wait to use (and 1 that looks terrible)
The iOS 18 logo against a blue and pink background.

Apple lifted the curtain on all of its upcoming software updates during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 keynote, showcasing what we can expect in all of its next major software updates — including iOS 18.

Apple Intelligence, Apple's own brand of AI tools, will be a large part of all the new software updates, including iOS 18. However, due to hardware constraints and the power necessary for AI, not all iPhones that can run iOS 18 will be able to get Apple Intelligence.
