Splatoon 3 gets new ‘chill’ stages and weapons this December

Splatoon 3 is getting a major update called Chill Season 2022 on December 1,. This free update includes new stages, weapons, and gear, plus a twist on the Salmon Run game mode.

As part of the Chill Season, Splatoon 3 is getting two new stages: Brinewater Springs and Flounder Heights, which first appeared in the original Splatoon for Wii U. In addition, the game will get a new Roller, Charger, and Shooter, along with 10 returning weapons from past Splatoon games.

The Chill Update also features the new Big Run event, which sends players on a mission to protect Wahoo World from the Salmonids. As shown in the trailer, this event is shaping up to be absolute chaos, offering a new twist on the Salmon Run co-op mode. X Battles are also coming alongside the latest update, and it’s unlocked by reaching elite rank in Anarchy Battles. It’s a highly competitive ranked mode meant to test top players’ skills as they aim to climb the leaderboards.

When the update goes live, be sure to check out the in-game vendors for new seasonal gear, custom titles, victory emotes, stickers, and other stylish items.

The Chill Season 2022 update is only a fraction of what Nintendo has in store for Splatoon 3. As the company announced previously, Splatoon 3 will be supported with content for at least two years, with new modes, items, maps, and other features to enjoy. While much of the planned content will be free, Splatoon 3 will also receive paid content, similar to the Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion.

Keep in mind, players must be subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online to enjoy Splatoon 3’s additional content.

3 retro classics to play on Nintendo Switch Online this weekend (May 3-5)

With rumors of a new Nintendo console heating up, it's once again time to accept that the Switch's long lifespan is coming to its end. 2024 will likely be the system's last full year before a successor steals its thunder. That's apparent in Nintendo's recent first-party offerings, as the system is getting a lot of remasters and niche curveballs this year. As exclusives like Endless Ocean: Luminous underwhelm, you may have found yourself looking for reasons to fire up your Switch.

Thankfully, you have a lot of great excuses to do so if you're subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online. The service is home to plenty of classic games from the NES up to the Nintendo 64. Even if you're a game historian, there's a good chance you haven't played everything Switch Online has to offer. This weekend, I have three recommendations for anyone looking to fire up some great, old games. These aren't random picks; I've chosen three games that feel spiritually linked to some of this spring's biggest games.

Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t getting DLC or a sequel from Larian, and that’s OK

Baldur's Gate 3 game director Swen Vincke shocked fans of the Dungeons & Dragons RPG when he revealed that the critically acclaimed game would not get any expansions and that Larian Studios would not go right into making Baldur's Gate 4. Considering how much of a runaway success Baldur's Gate 3 has been, it seemed like that would be the most logical continuation of things. Larian isn't the only studio to leave behind a wildly successful game either; Nintendo has confirmed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also won't get any expansions.

Those might seem like baffling decisions, both from a business perspective and from the point of view of an eager player who just wants more of a thing they love. But they become a lot more understandable when you learn to view these games as complete works, appreciate the post-launch support that has happened for a game like Baldur's Gate 3, and turn that excitement toward whatever is coming next from these developers.

Vincke explained to IGN that Larian had actually started to do some preliminary work on Baldur's Gate 3 DLC but that the constraints of working within D&D 5th edition meant that work "wasn't really coming from the heart" and that the team's passion lied with two other projects Larian wanted to make. As a result, leadership at Larian made the decision not to work on a massive expansion or sequel to Baldur's Gate 3 for the time being, and Vincke claims the studio was "elated" by that decision. Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma offered a similar sentiment when he revealed Tears of the Kingdom wasn't getting DLC, explaining that "we feel like we have already fully explored and exhausted the gameplay possibilities in this world" and that "the next [Zelda] game will offer a completely new experience."

There's a lot to see in Baldur's Gate 3, but you're not going to get far without a few good companions by your side. Thankfully, you'll stumble upon a wide assortment of NPCs that'd love nothing more than to accompany you on your journey. These friendly faces fill several different roles -- from mages and healers to archers and warriors, there's bound to be a companion that augments your playstyle.

Many of these companions also come with their own series of quests and unlockable skills, turning them into more than just faceless characters to help you in combat. In fact, you can spend hours unraveling their narratives, and depending on your actions, your companions might look very different at the end of Baldur's Gate 3 than when you first met them.
