Sonic Superstars will go head-to-head with Super Mario Wonder this October

Sonic Superstars, Sega’s latest 2D Sonic platforming adventure, now has a release date. Gamescom Opening Night Live featured a new trailer that confirmed Sonic Superstars will launch on October 17 — just days before Super Mario Wonder launches. Additionally, Sega revealed that Sonic Frontiers will receive another free update on September 28.

Sega previously announced Sonic Superstars at Summer Game Fest in 2023. It dropped the first trailer, which showcased the new art style side-by-side with the older games, and examples of how the co-op gameplay will work. At the time, all the trailer specified was a release date in Fall 2023. Considering it’s already mid-August, that release date was overdue for a reveal.

Sonic Superstars‘ latest trailer elaborated that it would also have a battle mode in addition to the already-revealed co-op gameplay. Sure, you can traverse colorful sceneries as a rocket or jellyfish, but you can also compete against friends in split-screen PvP challenges. On the other hand, co-op gameplay allows up to four players to play together as popular Sonic characters throughout the stages. Companions include Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose.

Note for Sonic fans: You can still snag an Amy Rose skin if you sign up for the Sonic Superstars newsletter. Sega’s offer stands until January 31, 2024, and it’s completely free. “Don modern Amy’s outfit on classic Amy from Sonic Superstars,” it says.

As for Sonic Frontiers, the free Final Horizon update will add new story content and challenges to the game. Tails, Amy, and Knuckles will be playable characters in the DLC. The update will be available on September 28.

Sonic Superstars will launch on October 17 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. You can visit the official Sonic Superstars website to preorder the game now.

Amazon’s ambitious MMO New World is finally coming to PS5 and Xbox this October

Amazon is finally bringing its MMO New World to consoles this October, and that’s coming as part of a larger rework of the fantasy game called New World: Aeternum.

When New World hits consoles on October 15, it will also add crossplay, so you can group up with your friends on different platforms. That said, it won’t feature cross-progression, as the characters you make will be locked to whatever platform you made them on. The controls and UI have also been reworked to function better with a controller, and Amazon Games expects New World to keep update parity across all three platforms starting this October.

This retro platformer is like Super Meat Boy or Celeste if you couldn’t jump

What if jumping in a challenging platformer like Celeste or Super Meat Boy was impossible? That's the idea at the core of Splodey, a new game from Send It Studios and influencer-owned game publisher Mad Mushroom.

A surprise release at June 4's OTK Games Expo showcase, Splodey is a platformer where players must throw potion bombs to propel themselves forward rather than jump. Clearly inspired by speedrunning-friendly platformers like Super Meat Boy and Celeste, Splodey changes how just one core mechanic works to craft a unique identity of its own. This next week or so is going to be full of surprise launches and exciting game announcements, but if you can take some time away from those to try a new game, pick up Splodey.
A platformer where players can't jump
Splodey has the pixel art aesthetic and simple story of a retro game. It's about the titular character, who struggles to make potions that don't explode at the Academy of Potion Making, so he decides to take down the entire establishment. From there, players are let free to complete four worlds worth of platforming challenges. Splodey can't jump, though, so it must use those explosive potions to propel itself forward to the portal at the end of each level.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is taking the series back to its 2D roots with a new and exciting art style and a ton of new mechanics. Alongside new power-ups and badges, this title has perhaps the largest amount of collectibles and hidden secrets of any game in the series. Between all the Wonder Seeds, Wonder Flowers, Flower Coins, and more, there's no shortage of things to do as you run, jump, and flip your way through all the various worlds. Among all the playable characters to choose from, one non-playable character makes his triumphant return. Captain Toad has managed to make his way to the Flower Kingdom, but this intrepid explorer is not so easy to find. Each time you interact with him, he will reward you with some Flower Coins and a hint at an upcoming world, so let's hunt down all his locations in Super Mario Wonder.
