Grid Legends is EA’s new racing game with a story mode

EA is known as one of the masters of the racing genre when it comes to video games, boasting series like Need for Speed and Burnout. Its newest venture into high-speed roads is Grid Legends, developed by Codemasters.

Grid Legends is setting out to be a new racing game experience unlike any other. The apparent goal of it is to immerse players through its story mode partnered with its lifelike environments and graphics. The story follows a “classic underdog tale” where players will compete in the Grid World series against the successful Raven West team. Besides this, no other story details have been revealed.

The game is throwing actual, developed characters into the mix. Each character will come with their own stories, packed with unique ambitions and backgrounds. EA is bringing in some top-tier acting talent to deliver the best experience possible. One of the confirmed actors is Ncuti Gatwa, who is famous for his role in Netflix’s Sex Education.

The entire game is captured in Extended Reality (XR), according to Codemasters. This technology is used in shows like Disney’s The Mandolorian to create the worlds that the characters explore.

There are also many unveiled modes, such as Boost Mode and Elimination Mode. Along with these come new locations like Moscow and London.

It’s clear that the main goal with Grid Legends is to create the most immersive racing experience on the market. Hopefully, racing game fans find the story addition more impressive than intrusive.

Grid Legends is set to launch sometime in 2022.

Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story is a new game about getting out of your comfort zone and connecting with others. In many ways, that's also the story of Riot Forge. The publishing label pushed its corporate parent Riot Games out of its AAA design instincts to expand the world of Runterra. There's only so much narrative you can weave into something like League of Legends, and all of Riot Forge’s games offered unique perspectives that enriched this world. I found fulfillment in that strategy too, as someone who enjoys the world of Runeterra, but didn't want to play League of Legends itself. It’s a treatment that few well-known franchises get outside comic book universes, Warhammer, and Star Wars.

Unfortunately, Bandle Tale is the last of its kind for now as Riot Forge has been shuttered as part of recent Riot Games layoffs. That’s a shame, not just for League of Legends, but the video game industry at large. If nothing else, Bandle Tale is worth checking out as a bold move from a major studio, which is something that's becoming increasingly rare.
A solid sendoff
Developer Lazy Bear Games’ Bandle Tale takes place in Bandle City, home to many of the cute, furry Yordle creatures that League of Legends players are likely familiar with. This gives us our first look into their society, which is fractured when a portal network is destroyed during a party toward the start of the game. After that, it’s up to the player, who had isolated themselves for over 100 years, to reunite the portal network and find their lost friends. Like most Riot Forge titles, Bandle Tale is narrative-focused and has more of a humorous edge than the label’s other games.

Apex Legends is reinventing itself again for its 5th anniversary

It's rare for a game to get active support for half a decade. For any game to live that long, reinvention is a necessity. Apex Legends has always understood that. The developers at Respawn are again shaking the shooter up for its fifth anniversary, which will kick off its twentieth season, Apex Legends: Breakout, next month. I got an early hands-off look at the impending updates to Apex Legends, and they all seem like smart ways to reinvigorate the live service titan and make it feel new again in 2024.

Don't worry, Apex Legends is staying a battle royale. It isn't trying to replicate the metaverse platform approach of Fortnite. Instead, it's making some tweaks to core gameplay systems to freshen things up. The most notable of these changes is the addition of a brand new Legend Upgrades system, which allows players to level up and select ability upgrades as they progress through four EVO Shield Tiers over the course of a match. For example, they can choose between giving Gibraltar's Dome of Protection ability a shorter cooldown and small size or increasing the time it's active by several seconds.

League of Legends publisher Riot Games lays off over 500 employees, shutters Riot Forge

League of Legends publisher Riot Games has cut 11% of its staff, resulting in 530 layoffs. The major company restructure will see the company's entire Riot Forge studio shut down and include cuts to the Legends of Runeterra development team.

Riot Games announced the move in two blog posts on its website. One details the scope of the layoffs and outlines how severance is being handled. The other goes into Riot's vision for its future, which will double down on established games like League of Legends and Valorant, as well as its upcoming fighting game Project L.
