The Game Awards 2022: Here’s the complete list of nominees

The full list of nominees for the 2022 Game Awards is here and (as you might have predicted) both Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok scored big. Other big nominees included games like Horizon Forbidden West and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, while indie titles struggled to break through aside from Stray.

Hosted by Geoff Keighley, The Game Awards is the video game industry’s version of the Oscars. This year’s show will take place in-person at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 8. Like previous years, it’ll live broadcast on various channels like YouTube and Twitch. The show is known for delivering world premiere reveals for upcoming games, as well as giving out a slew of awards in a variety of categories.

This year’s nominations come as no surprise. Elden Ring could be poised to sweep, as it picked up seven nominations. It even got a few puzzling nominations in categories like Best Narrative. It’ll face a tough foe in God of War Ragnarok, though, which picked up 10 nominations itself. That number is higher largely due to its two nominations in the Best Performance category. The two will duke it out in key categories like Best Action/Adventure Game and Game of the Year.

While those two games lead the nomination field, they aren’t the only games that scored big. The coveted Game of the Year category also includes A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. All four of those games scored nominations in other categories across the board as well.

There’s little diversity when it comes to the rest of the field, especially when it comes to independent games. The critically acclaimed Immortality snagged three nominations away from big budget games, but independent titles largely lost out to behemoths like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Gran Turismo 7.

We've come to the end of 2023, and after a year of gigantic, highly anticipated releases and delightful surprises in the video game world, we've come to the expected conclusion. Some of the biggest games of the last few years, like Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2, battled it out for the top prize amid a varied string of announcements Thursday night, with Baldur's Gate 3 eventually emerging with six wins, including Game of the Year and Best Performance for Neil Newbon. Alan Wake 2, which had the same number of nominations as Baldur's Gate 3, received three awards and stole the show with the Herald of Darkness live performance. Elsewhere, Cocoon and Sea of Stars scored in the indie categories, while Forza Motorsport snuck in with two wins.

However, the main focus of The Game Awards is the announcements, which set the stage for the next year of releases. Not only did we get details on Hideo Kojima's Xbox game, but we also got reveals for Monster Hunter Wild, God of War DLC, Arkane Lyon's new game, and so much more. When is The Game Awards 2023
The Game Awards 2023 starts with a 30-minute pre-show at 4:30 p.m. PT today, December 7. The main show is then expected to begin at around 5:00 p.m. PT. The Game Awards tend to last anywhere from three to four hours, depending on the length of the award acceptance speech and developer conversations, which are done live. In a recent live stream, Geoff Keighley said he hopes this year's event is a bit shorter.

The Game Awards 2023 will be streaming on lots of platforms today. Official channels will host the event livestream for free across YouTube, Twitch, X, Facebook, Steam, TikTok, Instagram, and even Kick. The Game Awards features 24 game-related categories -- and even that doesn't feel like enough every time nominees are announced. Indies and more experimental games are often overlooked as the current categories reward the biggest AAA action-focused titles. Geoff Keighley has stated that he constantly assesses which award categories should be present at The Game Awards, but the only major addition recently was Best Game Adaptation in 2022.
